St. Ann Catholic Elementary students get special Christmas delivery from McKeil School of Business

On Friday, Dec. 19, 2014, all 326 students at St. Ann Catholic Elementary School got a special delivery from Mohawk College's McKeil School of Business.

Mohawk Advertising students won gold, silver and bronze in the student award competition at the 2013 Canadian Marketing Association Awards last Friday in Toronto. Mohawk Advertising students have won gold for seven consecutive years and have won 31 CMA awards overall.

Gold: Marco Buchar, Scott Rodgerson, Erikson Melton, Shawn Walton (coached by Jef Petrossi)

Silver: Osman Rahmani, Eric Williamson (coached by Jef Petrossi)

The CMA awards gala topped off an award-winning month for Mohawk Advertising students who also had sevens winners at the Applied Arts AACE Awards and four winners at the Ad and Design Club of Canada's Awards night in November.

Mohawk College Advertising students win big in national awards competition

Five students from Mohawk's Advertising program have won silver in the 2013 Advertising & Design Club of Canada student competition. The Advertising & Design Club of Canada is a non-profit group dedicated to encouraging excellence in Canadian advertising and design.

Congratulations to Mohawk students:

SILVER: Edward Balli (History Channel)

SILVER: Justin Turco and Curtis Denomme (Sail)

SILVER: Emmanuel Torres and Mikhail Ferrara (Afterbite). Emmanuel is currently with Leo Burnett.

FINALIST: Sarah Quinto and Justin Turco (Duracell). Sara is currently with TBWA and Justin is with TAXI Canada.

“It’s great to see our students once again winning at this award show, led by their creative professor Jef Petrossi,” says Advertising program coordinator Wayne Aubert. “One of our best showings!”

Mohawk's Advertising Program collected more than 330 toys and more than 100 stocking stuffers in the program's annual toy drive,

Toy drives are a holiday tradition for Mohawk's Advertising program. This year, Advertising students collected more than 330 toys to give to Mountain Kidz, a grassroots organization run out of the Eastmount Community Centre on East 26th Street in Hamilton.

Advertising Program coordinator and professor Wayne Aubert says the students worked hard to make this year's toy drive a success. Second-year student Adam Pipe set up a partnership with Tracies' Restaurant on Upper James that raised hundreds of dollars and collected dozens of toys, gift baskets and stockings. Dana Radcliffe led students on a class-to-class coin drive, and Lindsay Celeste worked with Walmart Upper James to add Mountain Kidz tags to their donation tree, a move that raised dozens and dozens of toys. And Kirk Macdonald brought in toys from Second Chance sports. And, as part of their coursework, third-year students Meaghan O’Neill-Townsend and Shannan Rubyran a concert that saw all ticket sales go to the toy drive.

Wayne also thanks the staff and students from other programs who also lent a hand, including Janet Mannen, of the Office Admininistration program and Alice Szraiber, of the Office Administration-Executive program, who both raised toys and cash from their students, and Tim Tuck, of the Public Relations Graduate Certificate program and Tracey Kadish, of the Broadcasting, Television and Communications Media program, who also gave donations.

CBC Hamilton has this story about Mohawk College Advertising students winning gold for the sixth consecutive year at the Canadian Marketing Association Awards. A second team of Advertising students won silver (gold was not awarded in their category). Mohawk students have won 28 CMA Awards and last year swept the gold, silver and broze awards in both student categories.

Mohawk's Advertising students and staff capped off an award-winning semester by giving back to Mountain Kidz in a big way. The nonprofit's annual Christmas dinner this Saturday will include 300 toys collected and donated by students and staff.

"It's been tough year for many Hamiltonians and Kathy Archer of Mountain Kidz had warned me that demand for help was increasing, " says Wayne Aubert, the Advertising Program Coordinator who spearheads the annual toy drive. "We knew that we had our work cut out for us this year with a record request of 150 toys."

Third-year Advertising student Denis Spellen was the leader for the toy drive and worked with a student team on fundraising and classroom visits. The Advertising program joined forces with Mohawk's campus radio station INDI FM, with students writing and producing public service announcements to promote the toy drive.

Also supporting the toy drive were Alegra Print, St Martin of Tours, students from Mohawk's postgraduate Public Relations program and students of Office Administration professor Janet Mannen, who personally matched student contributions.

"We're delighted that we exceeded our goal by 100 per cent and Mountain Kidz will make sure every toy finds a home," says Wayne. "When I gave the good news to Mountain Kidz, I learned that their dinners had all booked up for this Saturday and requests for help from the community were still coming in. We'll make a big difference this year."

Last month, Mohawk's Advertising program swept all six awards in the student categories at the Canadian Marketing Association's awards competition. Seven Mohawk Advertising students also won in the Applied Arts Student Awards Annual and Mohawk had two silver medal winners in the Advertising and Design Club of Canada Awards. Of the eight finalists, six were Mohawk students.
