Mohawk Music grad wins prestigious award at Montreal Jazz Festival

The Brad Cheeseman Group, led by the Hamilton bassist and composer and Mohawk Music alumna, was awarded the prestigious TD Grand Prix Jazz Award at this year's Festival International de Jazz de Montreal.

The prize features recording time, future festival appearances, prize money, and included a feature performance on the festival's TD Stage. Each year, the festival selects 10 Canadian artists to compete for the award and, after careful consideration, selects a winner based on their festival performances.

Brad Cheeseman—joined by pianist Sam Kogen, drummer Marito Marques, saxophonist Chelsea McBride and fellow Mohawk College alumnus guitarist Robert Chapman—delivered the exciting competition-deciding performance on July 4 at the Club Jazz Casino stage, performing selections from the band's award-winning self-titled album for hundreds of enthusiastic festival-goers.

At the festival's press conference, Cheeseman stated that "to be here at all, especially with nine other fantastic artists, is a huge honour and to get this recognition is incredible." The band later delivered a concluding performance on the festival's TD Stage on July 5.

Three Mohawk music faculty nominated for Music Teacher of the Year (post-secondary)

Three Mohawk College music faculty have been nominated for the Music Teacher of the Year (post-secondary) award at this year's Hamilton Music Awards.

The Mohawk nominees are Violin professor Jemshed Turel, Woodwind professor Terry Basom and Classical Guitar professor Emma Rush. All three are professors in the College's Applied Music program. The Music Teacher of the Year Awards will be given out on Saturday night at the HMA's Industry Awards show, held at the McIntyre Centre for the Performing Arts at Mohawk College's Fennell Campus.

Another Mohawk music faculty member, Cellist Kirk Starky, has also been nominated for Music Teacher of the Year (Independent School).

Monday Night Music School Returns for fall 2011

Mohawk College's Music Department offers Mohawk College families and the Hamilton Community private lessions taught by 2^nd and 3^rd year Music students.

Lessons take place every Monday, beginning September 19. The cost is only $80 for an entire semester, which includes about 11-12 lessons. Students can receive instruction on many popular instruments, including drums, acoustic and electric guitar, piano, acoustic or electric base, voice and music theory.
