CCAA Men's Basketball first-round matchups set

March 10, 2015 – The Mohawk Mountaineers punched their ticket to Nationals last year when they were awarded the 2015 CCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship.

Regardless, the Mountaineers earned their way into the tournament by capturing the OCAA Championship with a victory over the Humber Hawks. In doing so, Mohawk was rewarded with the No. 3 seed for the tournament, which will be held March 18-21 in Hamilton, ON.

Meanwhile, the defending champion Langara Falcons are back once again – this time as a wildcard team after being defeated in the PACWEST Championship final by the VIU Mariners.

The Championship Awards Banquet will be held on Wednesday, March 18 at the Sheraton Hotel, where the CCAA Player of the Year, Coach of the Year and All-Canadians will be honoured.

Here are the first-round matchups:

Holland Hurricanes (1) vs. Medicine Hat Rattlers (8)

Holland, led by All-Canadian D.J. Wright, needed overtime to defeat Crandall 96-91 for the ACAA Championship. The Hurricanes finished atop the ACAA with a perfect 18-0 record in the regular season. They’ll face the wildcard team from the ACAC, the Medicine Hat Rattlers and All-Canadian Guilherme Carabagiale Fuck. Medicine Hat, 16-8 in the regular season, were defeated by Lethbridge in the conference final.

VIU Mariners (2) vs. Lethbridge Kodiaks (7)

The VIU Mariners steamrolled through the PACWEST this season with a 20-1 record. All-Canadian Justin King and the Mariners outlasted the defending CCAA champion Langara 82-76 in the conference final. VIU will face Lethbridge, the ACAC champions. The Kodiaks finished second in the South Division with an 18-6 record and knocked off Medicine Hat in the conference final.

Mohawk Mountaineers (3) vs. Champlain Saint-Lambert Cavaliers (6)

All-Canadian Matthew Fennell and the not-your-average host Mountaineers earned the No. 3 seed by capturing the OCAA Championship. Mohawk, 15-3 in the regular season, defeated division rival Humber 84-74 in the conference final. They’ll face the Saint-Lambert Cavaliers, the RSEQ regular season (14-4) and playoff champions. Saint-Lambert, led by All-Canadian Kasheem Thomas, downed Vanier in the RSEQ final.

Humber Hawks (4) vs. Langara Falcons (5)

The Humber Hawks, defeated by Mohawk in the OCAA Championship final, will represent Ontario. Humber finished atop the OCAA’s West Division with a 17-1 record. They’ll face the defending National Champion Falcons, a wildcard team. Langara, defeated by VIU in the PACWEST Championship final, is led by All-Canadian Jitinder Lohcham. The Falcons were 18-3 in the regular season.

OSHAWA, MARCH 8, 2015: For the first time since 2012, the Mohawk men's basketball team is the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association champion. The Mountaineers defeated the Humber Hawks 84-74 in the gold medal game at the 2015 belairdirect OCAA Men's Basketball Championship at Durham College in Oshawa Sunday.

Mohawk came storming out of the gate to take a 9-0 lead before Humber discovered their game, but still trailed 19-14 after the first quarter.

The Mountaineers, getting some timely three point shooting and strong work on the boards, increased their lead to 44-31 at the half. They led by 19 points (65-46) after three quarters and when Jeff Hunt sank a big three-pointer to start the final period to put his team up by 22, it really looked like they would coast to victory.

However, the Hawks would have none of that and with an 11-0 run and forcing the the Mountaineers into several turnovers and mental mistakes, Humber whittled their deficit down to seven points (77-70) and the game was suddenly up for grabs. But Mohawk finally recovered and kept their lead in double digits pretty well the rest of the way. This despite the fact the Hawks outscored them 28-19 in the final quarter.

Statistically, Championship MVP Matt Fennell had 26 points,11 rebounds and came up with five turnovers for the Mountaineers. Matt Savel had 21 points, six assists and three turnovers. Andrew Cicuttini scored 14, added eight boards and forced five turnovers. Lamar Barr scored 10 points, contributed nine rebounds, had three assists, five turnovers and three blocked shots.

For Humber, Kenny Ejim scored 22 points and Junior Davis had 20.

Both teams will represent the OCAA in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association National Championship at Mohawk College March 19-21.

Host Durham College won the bronze medal, defeating St. Lawrence-Kingston 66-51.

As an added bonus, the Mountaineers will compete for the national basketball title at the the 2015 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Men’s Basketball Championship, which is being held at Mohawk College's Fennell Campus next week.

Eight teams from all across Canada will be competing in this year’s tournament. COLLEGE WILL HOST CCAA NATIONAL MEN'S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP STARTING MARCH 19

HAMILTON, ON (March 3, 2015) — More than 200 athletes from across Canada are gathering at Mohawk College Fennell Campus from March 19 to 21, to play for gold in the 2015 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Men’s Basketball Championship. The event is presented by Budds’ BMW of Hamilton.

The Mohawk Mountaineers are ready to shoot, score and compete for the championship title. The Mohawk Mountaineers won the CCAA Championship in 2012.

“It is a long process to get to the championships. To put a team together that can compete at this level has been about a five year process,” says Brian Jonker, head coach of the Mohawk Mountaineers men’s basketball team. “The team has played well this season and we’re feeling confident as we head into the tournament. We’re looking forward to seeing who the competition is and to welcoming them to Mohawk on the 19th.”

The National Basketball Championship is the highpoint of the season. All games lead to the championship. The athletes have spent many months competing against each other to play in this exclusive event.

Tournament passes, as well as single day tickets are available now.

An adult tournament pass is $30, student/senior is $20. Full and part time Mohawk day students are free with a One Card. Single day passes are $10 adult, $5 students/seniors.

TOURNAMENT TO DRAW MORE THAN 200 ATHLETES FROM ACROSS CANADA

HAMILTON (December 12, 2014) — Mohawk’s award winning David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre is hosting the Budds’ BMW Hamilton Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Men’s Basketball Championship in March 2015.

The championship title will be decided over three days starting March 19 and is expected to draw more than 200 athletes from across Canada to Hamilton. Mohawk’s Mountaineers men’s basketball team will be among the eight teams completing at the tournament. The Mountaineers won the national title in 2012 and will be looking to reclaim the title on their home court.

This is the first national championship to be held at the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre, and the first national men’s competition to be held at the College in more than 40 years.

Leading up to the tournament, event sponsor Budds’ BMW will holding a “Time Trial” competition at the start of every Mountaineers home game. Two contestants will race radio-controlled BMW cars around a course in the gymnasium. The drivers with the fastest times will be invited to compete during the tournament in March with the overall winner getting a full day at the BMW Driving School in London, Ontario, where they will learn safety and driving techniques.

Media Release: Mohawk College Welcomes Ontario Women's Basketball Championship to Hamilton

HAMILTON, ON – Mohawk College will welcome the top eight women’s basketball teams from across Ontario this week to the 2014 belairdirect Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Women’s Basketball Championship, sponsored by Budd’s BMW of Hamilton.

The three day tournament begins Thursday, Feb. 27 and runs through to Saturday, March 1 at Mohawk’s new David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre. This is the first major sporting event to be held at the new centre. Mohawk is also hosting the Canadian Colleges Athletics Association national men’s basketball championship in 2015 with Budd’s BMW returning as the event sponsor.

The women teams will be arriving in Hamilton starting Wednesday. Each team will have chance for a practice prior to the tournament start on Thursday. The Mountaineers women will play their first match of the tournament against Durham on Thursday at 6 p.m.

First regular season varsity basketball games tonight in the new David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre

What promises to be an entertaining season of basketball gets under way Wednesday (Oct. 23) as both of Mohawk's teams have their regular season OCAA openers against the Redeemer Royals at the new David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre.

The women's game is first up at 6 p.m..

After a fine pre-season, which included the championship in the Georgian Invitational Tournament in Barrie, Mountaineers' head coach Kevin Duffy said his team is very excited about playing a meaningful game in the new building.

"The team has made a lot of improvements in the pre-season," said Duffy. "We still have a lot to work on, but I am happy with the progress we have made at this point. We know Redeemer will come in playing hard and looking to spoil our big night, so we need to bring lots of energy and focus on our execution."

Meanwhile, the Mohawk men served notice they'll be tough to beat this campaign. Their 10-0 pre-season included a tourney title at St. Lawrence College in Kingston and a first ever victory over the McMaster Marauders.

Mohawk head coach Brian Jonker noted his team is big and experienced but without a true point guard. "I envisioned us having issues getting the ball to 'our bigs' and possibly having trouble scoring this year. In the pre-season that hasn't been a problem as we have averaged 95 points per game," said Jonker. "Our issue has been stopping people from scoring. We have given up 73 points a game and we would like that to be in the lower 60's. The good news is, that will be easier to fix. We look forward to continued improvement and think we have the chance to contend for a National Championship."

Coach Jonker said the Mountaineers want to sustain what they have built over the last few years and continue to be a contender on a yearly basis.

Mountaineers men's and women's b-ball teams bid farewell to the Fennell Gym tonight

Mohawk's men's and women's basketball teams will play the final games at the Fennell Campus Gymnasium tonight (Wednesday Feb. 20). The Mountaineers will be moving to the College's new recreation centre in the fall.

Tonight's first game is at 6 p.m. and features the Mohawk Mountaineers women against the Sheridan Bruins. The Mountaineers have already earned a qualifying spot in the playoffs, but will not know until after tonight's league action who their opponent will be.

In men's basketball action, two teams who have already qualified for the OCAA Championship will complete their men's regular schedule as the Mohawk Mountaineers men meet the Bruins. That game will tipoff at 8 p.m.
