Mohawk College will expand its Community Services programs in Hamilton to welcome students from Brantford at the start of 2014-15 academic year in September.

With the move, Mohawk will no longer offer post-secondary programs in Brantford. The college currently has 350 students enrolled in six Community Services programs in downtown Brantford. Approximately 60 per cent of those students commute from Hamilton and the same six programs are offered in Hamilton.

Mohawk will continue to work with education and community partners in Brantford on academic upgrading programs, field placements and co-operative work terms.

Along with enhancing the overall college experience for students through access to a full range of services, supports and amenities, relocating the programs will generate approximately $1 million in savings at a time of increasing fiscal constraint for Ontario colleges and universities.

“While discontinuing our full-time programs in Brantford this September was a difficult decision, it’s a move that will further enhance the college experience for students and help meet our obligation for a balanced budget,” says Mohawk President Rob MacIsaac. “Quality and sustainability are strategic priorities and this move delivers on both fronts.”

For students who will complete their programs in Hamilton, Mohawk will continue to offer a subsidized shuttle service from Brantford. Mohawk will also honour the collective agreements in place with faculty and support staff.

In the Fall of 2013, Mohawk relocated its Health, Wellness and Justice programs to the Fennell Campus in Hamilton and closed the Elgin Street Campus. Mohawk had previously relocated graphics and skilled trades programs to Hamilton.

The temporary hoarding wall is up and work has begun on the renovations to the Fennell Campus gymnasium.

The gym, along with portions of B Wing and F Wing, are being renovated to make room for classrooms, labs and scenario spaces for students from Mohawk's School of Justice and Wellness Studies. The J&W students will be moving to Fennell from the Brantford Elgin Campus this September.

The $16 million renovation project will see the lower portion of the gym turned into space for cardio, circuit and high-performance physical training. A new collaboratory is being added to give students more space to work or relax between classes, and a new second floor mezzanine will house first-class labs, classrooms and scenario rooms for the justice studies students. Portions of the lower level concourse in C Wing are being converted to offices for staff and faculty from the School of Justice and Wellness Studies.

While work gets underway in the gym, portions of B Wing on the south-east side of the Fennell Campus are being renovated to accommodate specialized learning and hands-on training areas for Justice studies students. The spaces being added include mock living quarters, retail and restaurant environments, and forensic and flash drill labs for tactical scenario training. The renovations to B Wing also include outdoor spaces that will be used for urban streetscape simulations.

Just to the west of the gym in F Wing, the former campus store space is being renovated to accommodate students from Wellness studies. The changes will include a nutrition-focused kitchen, testing areas, a new classroom, as well as space for exercise and circuit training equipment.

All of the renovations will be completed by August.

New Athletic and Recreation Centre on schedule for September opening

The Mohawk Athletics and Recreation Centre is scheduled to open this September.

When the doors open in September, Mohawk students will have access to the newest, and one of the best, athletics and recreation centres at any Ontario college.

Mohawk's new Athletics and Recreation Centre will quickly become an integral part of the college experience for Mohawk students and provide Mohawk's varsity athletes with a first-class facility to show off at their home games. Some of the features of the new centre include:

Three gyms

Five times the fitness space (than currently offered in the residence fitness centre)

All new fitness equipment

The Athletics and Recreation Centre and the ongoing renovations to the Fennell Campus are part of Mohawk's Fennell Campus Renewal Project – the largest project of its kind in Mohawk’s history that to date includes a new library, student services centre, student labs and common areas.

Do you have old or broken electronics adding clutter to your life? Let the Sustainability Office recycle them for you.

In partnership with MIDA RPM and Ontario Electronic Stewardship (OES), the Mohawk College Sustainability Office will be hosting an Electronic Waste Recycling Drive at all Mohawk campuses. You can bring in your electronic waste on any of the following days:

Brantford Campus- Thursday, October 11^th, 2012 between 8:00am-11:00am outside the Student Engagement Office.

STARRT Campus- Tuesday, October 16^th, 2012 between 8:00am-11:00am outside the Student Engagement Office.

Fennell Campus- Wednesday, October 17^th, 2012 between 8:00am-11:00am and 4:00pm – 7pm in the MCACES Lounge.

IAHS Campus- Thursday, October 18^th, 2012 between 11:00am-3:00pm in the lobby.

Bring in your unwanted devices or used batteries and they will be properly disposed of in a way that is safe for the environment, and convenient for you. Everyone that participates in the recycling drive by bringing in a recyclable item will receive a voucher for a free coffee, redeemable with a reusable coffee mug from Tim Horton’s.

Visit the booth for a great opportunity to take part in one of many programs and services offered by the Sustainability Office.

The Globe and Mail's Report on Business has this story about the growth of postsecondary education in downtown Brantford. The number of Mohawk students and programs in downtown Brantford will nearly double when the Elgin Street Campus closes at the end of the 2012-13 academic year. Mohawk was the first postsecondary institution to serve Brantford residents in the early 1970s.

Mohawk receives Community Partnership Award from Workforce Planning Board of Grand Erie

The Workforce Planning Board of Grand Erie recognized Mohawk College's Brantford Campus and Fanshawe College's Simcoe Campus for their longstanding support of the at the Board's annual Partnership Awards Breakfast held on Tuesday.

Mohawk and Fanshawe shared the Community Partnership Award for their longstanding support and ongoing work with the Board. Both colleges frequently provide facilities and resources for events, have partnered on projects with the Board and participated on committees.

Mohawk has helped the Workforce Planning Board to deliver skilled trades conferences for our young men and women, Skills Canada youth camp, Males in Human Services, and health career fairs. Mohawk has also supported research projects, the most recent of which included a region-wide analysis of the Plastic and Rubber Industry.

Jo-Anne Procter, Associate Dean Justice and Wellness Studies, and professors Mike Pearson, Darian Boyington and Linda Whetter accepted the award for Mohawk College. Workforce Planning Board directors Graham Carroll and Jake Francis presented the awards.

The awards are handed out yearly to thank and recognize partners who contribute in a significant way to the Workforce Planning Board's projects, activities and events.
