Cheryl Jensen Scholarship for Women in Technology established to honour departing Vice President

The Cheryl Jensen Scholarship for Women in Technology has been established by the Mohawk College Foundation to celebrate Cheryl's 31 years of service to Mohawk College. Cheryl, who has served as a Professor, Dean and Vice President, is leaving Mohawk Aug. 22 to become President of Algonquin College. Cheryl began her career at Mohawk teaching in the School of Engineering Technology and was the first woman to lead the School as Dean. A farewell celebration for Cheryl's college and community friends and colleagues will be held Aug. 19 in the Arnie at the Fennell Campus starting at 4:30 p.m.

RE: CHERYL JENSEN’S APPOINTMENT AS PRESIDENT OF ALGONQUIN COLLEGE

It is with very mixed emotions that I announce that Cheryl Jensen has been appointed President of Algonquin College. True to form, Cheryl will be leaving Mohawk on August 22^nd and beginning work at Algonquin on August 25^th.

Cheryl joined Mohawk as a professor in 1983 and has served as Dean, Executive Dean, Vice President of Engineering Technology, Apprenticeship and Corporate Training and Vice President Academic. Among Cheryl’s impressive list of achievements is the development and launch of Canada’s first Bachelor of Technology collaborative degree program with McMaster University and the award-winning Hydro One – College Consortium. Cheryl also led the $27 million transformation of our Stoney Creek campus and was a driving force behind the successful launch and growth of our applied research and access initiatives.

Cheryl’s contributions to the Ontario college system and our community have been recognized with the Association of Canadian Community Colleges’ Silver Award for Leadership Excellence and a Women of Distinction Award from YWCA Hamilton.

Mohawk is fortunate to have a strong academic team who will carry on in Cheryl’s absence. Piero Cherubini has been appointed interim Vice President Academic. The decision on Cheryl’s successor will be made by incoming President Ron McKerlie, who joins Mohawk on August 5^th.

Cheryl will be at Algonquin College today and Friday and returning to Mohawk on Monday. You are invited to join Cheryl’s many college and community friends at an early evening farewell reception to be held on August 19^th in the Arnie starting at 4:30 p.m. The Cheryl Jensen Scholarship for Women in Technology has been established in Cheryl’s honour and donations can be made online through the Mohawk College Foundation.

On a personal note, it was a great honour to work closely with Cheryl for the past five years. You would be hard pressed to find anyone at Mohawk who is more proud of our students, faculty and staff and who believes more passionately in the power of a college education to transform lives and build stronger communities.

Please join me in congratulating Cheryl on her appointment as Algonquin's first female President and thanking her for remarkable contributions to Mohawk College over the past three decades.

The Hamilton Spectator has this story about women in apprenticeships and skilled trades. The story includes Mohawk College apprentice Brandi Ferenc and Vice President Academic Cheryl Jensen. Brandi wrote her final exam this week and works for an international company that maintains complex commercial heating and ventilation systems.

Three Mohawk College staff members have been recognized by the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC) at its annual conference in Halifax, N.S.

ACCC’s annual Awards of Excellence celebrate extraordinary contributions of individuals to their colleges and highlight the role colleges play in the social, cultural and economic development of the communities they serve.

Vice President Academic Cheryl Jensen received the Silver award for Leadership Excellence. Cheryl was the driving force behind many Mohawk success stories, including the launch of Canada’s first Bachelor of Technology Program in collaboration with McMaster University, the creation of the award-winning Hydro One – College Consortium and the $27 million transformation of Mohawk’s skilled trades campus in Stoney Creek. Cheryl is very active in the community serving on various boards and foundations, and she’s currently working with public, private and non-profit sector partners on a project aimed at promoting postsecondary education to at-risk youth in high-need neighbourhoods.

Alan Griffiths, Mohawk’s sustainable environment specialist, received the Silver Staff Excellence Award. Alan is responsible for Mohawk’s green initiatives, including taking the lead role in the development of the College’s first comprehensive environmental management plan. The plan commits Mohawk to a 20 per cent reduction of 2007 baseline carbon emissions by 2020, and includes strategies achieve reductions in eight target areas. Alan is also very active in the local sustainability movement, representing Mohawk on city-wide initiatives aimed at improving access to alternative transportation and helping businesses reduce their carbon footprint.

Jef Petrossi is a creative advertising professor in Mohawk's Advertising Advanced Diploma program and this year's recipient of the Bronze ACCC Teaching Excellence Award. An award-winning writer that has worked at some of the world's leading advertising agencies, Jef knows what it takes to be successful and works hard to make his students stand out in an extremely competitive industry. Since joining Mohawk four years ago, Jef's students have won numerous awards at prestigious national and international competitions including the CMA's national awards, the Ad and Design Club of Canada's national awards and Applied Arts Magazine advertising awards show. Some of Jef’s former students have gone to work for North America’s best agencies such as BBDO, Taxi2, Saatchi & Saatchi, Proximity, Ogilvy and Lowe Roche.

The Hamilton Spectator has this story about Roberta Tremain (picture far right), the first woman to graduate from the Hamilton Institute of Technology (HIT), the precursor to Mohawk College, in 1961. Roberta chose to mark the 50th anniversary of her graduation from HIT by donating $50,000 to establish entrance scholarships for women enrolled in technology programs at Mohawk. During her visit to the College on Tuesday, Roberta met with Cheryl Jensen, Mohawk's Vice President Academic, and the first female Dean of the College's Faculty of Engineering Technology. Cheryl says the scholarships will be used to encourage young women to enter technology fields.

The Hamilton Spectator has this story about professor Ishwar Singh, who's retiring after more than 40 years with Mohawk and McMaster University. Ishwar played a key role in building a collaborative and award-winning Bachelor of Technology program that combines the best of a Mohawk and McMaster education. “He’s probably the smartest man I’ve ever met in my life, yet he has the ability to bring that knowledge to students at any level in their academic career, and help them understand and become passionate about their own discipline,” Cheryl Jensen, Mohawk’s vice-president responsible for academic matters, told The Spectator. “He’s so motivating. He’s brilliant and he’s a gentle, kind spirit.”

Run for the Cure with Mohawk's Cheryl Jensen

Cheryl Jensen, Mohawk's VP Academic, invites students and staff to join her at the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure on Sunday, Oct. 3 in Burlington Central Park. The Mohawk team will meet by the bandshell.

Final registration and donation drop-off is 7:30 a.m. Opening ceremonies are at 10 a.m., with the warm-up at 10:15 a.m. The run starts at 10:30 a.m. with the awards celebration at 11:30 a.m.

The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure is Canada's largest single day, volunteer-led fundraising event dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer research, and education and awareness programs.
