NEXT STOP MOHAWK COLLEGE TERMINAL. Mohawk College President Ron McKerlie, the Hon. Ted McMeekin, Mayor Fred Eisenberger & Mohawk Students' Association President Luke Baylis get ready to ride to the future home of the newest transit terminal on Hamilton Mountain.

Hamilton, ON (September 25, 2015) – Construction has begun on a new transit terminal at the corner of Fennell Avenue and West 5^th that will further improve service for Mohawk College students and Mountain residents.

The Mohawk College Terminal is part of a $3.3 million investment in Hamilton transit funded by Metrolinx. The funding for the terminal is in addition to the $1 billion announced by the Government of Ontario May to build Hamilton Light Rail Transit.

The terminal will service Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) routes on the Mountain, including the A-Line, from a convenient location for passengers commuting to both the college and surrounding area. Commute times will be shortened as HSR buses will no longer drive through Mohawk’s pedestrian-first campus.

The majority of construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2015 with shelters and passenger amenities to follow in early 2016.

QUICK FACTS:

The Mohawk College Terminal will feature five bays with transit shelters and real-time service information.

More than 4,100 students, faculty and staff take public transit daily to and from Mohawk’s Fennell Campus.

Mohawk is renovating the terminal’s entrance to the Fennell campus and building an indoor heated waiting area for passengers.

The Mohawk Students’ Association partners with the HSR to provide all full-time students with an annual bus pass.

The number of daily transit trips to and from the Fennell Campus increased 68 per cent between 2009 and 2011.

Since 2009, more than $90 million has been invested in renewing Mohawk’s three campuses for the benefit of students.

The City of Hamilton received approximately $29.8 million in Metrolinx Quick Win funds through the 2008 Ontario Budget to be used for municipal capital expenditures for transit vehicles and infrastructure to support B-Line Improvements (King-Main corridor) and A-Line Improvements (James-Upper James Corridor).

Mohawk students, staff and alumni dig in to support biodiversity at Confederation Park

Mohawk College President Rob MacIsaac plants a tree along the Lake Ontario shoreline at Confederation Park in Hamilton.

Last Saturday, 60 Mohawk College alumni, student and staff volunteers and their families turned out to plant 300 trees along a stretch of Lake Ontario shoreline at Confederation Park.

Mohawk College's Sustainability Office teamed up with the Mohawk College Alumni Association and Earth Day Hamilton-Burlington to organize the first-ever Planting Our Roots event. The volunteers were joined by Mohawk College President, Rob MacIsaac, Vice President Academic, Cheryl Jensen, and Mohawk College Foundation President, Wayne Joudrie for a morning of tree planting and a lesson in biodiversity and conservation. Other key partners in the project were the City of Hamilton and the Hamilton Conservation Authority.

Planting Our Roots is part of a multi-year program that will prevent expansion of invasive tree species and provide some competition and diversity for the local ecosystem. The 300 trees planted at Confederation Park will help anchor the soil, protect from further soil erosion and increase biodiversity, while providing enhanced habitat for migratory birds. Trees planted include Trembling Aspen, Large Tooth Aspen and Eastern Cottonwood. The three species will compete with the invasive Black Locust tree.

Earth Day Hamilton-Burlington provided lessons on tree planting while explaining the importance of the project and benefits to the diverse plant and animal species that live along the shoreline. Earth Day also coordinated an on-location waste program where nearly all lunch items were composted or recycled.

Mohawk thanks all of the volunteers for their participation at the first annual Planting Our Roots.

Media release: Record-setting Canadian Olympian returns to Hamilton for community talk and dedication ceremony

HAMILTON ( April 26, 2013) — The only athlete to win multiple medals in Summer and Winter Games has returned to the city and the hill where she began her road to Olympic glory.

On Friday, April 26 at 10:30 a.m., six-time Canadian Olympic medallist Clara Hughes will speak about the transformative power of sport and how it transformed her life during a community event at Mohawk College’s McIntyre Performing Arts Centre. Mohawk Talks with Clara Hughes is presented by McKeil Marine Ltd. with The Hamilton Spectator. Hughes, 40, is donating her speaker’s fee to Take a Hike, an alternative education program that engages at-risk youth through adventure-based learning, academics, counseling and community involvement.

On Saturday, April 27, Hughes will return to Sydenham Road in Dundas for a dedication ceremony and celebration of her athletic achievements and humanitarian contributions. A commemorative plaque will be unveiled at the summit of the hill where Hughes trained from 1991 to 1998 for the Olympics. Hughes credited her training on the 116 metre hill for helping her win two bronze medals in cycling at the 1996 Olympics. An honour guard from the CHCH National Cycling Centre Hamilton will escort Hughes through Dundas and up Sydenham Road to the lookout for the 11 a.m. ceremony. The dedication ceremony is supported by McKeil Marine, The City of Hamilton, The Hamilton Spectator and Sport Hamilton.

Hughes is a six-time Olympic medallist in cycling and speed skating, winning a gold, silver and four bronze medals. In 2012, CBC named Hughes one of Canada’s 10 most influential figures in sports and one of the country’s greatest citizens. Hughes is the national spokesperson for Bell Canada’s Mental Health initiative and the ‘Let’s Talk’ campaign. By sharing past struggles with depression, Hughes has helped break down the stigma associated with mental illness. On April 25, Hughes announced plans to ride her bike coast to coast to coast for more than 100 days to talk about mental health with schools and community groups. Beginning in March 2014, “Clara’s Big Ride for Bell Let’s Talk” will cover more than 12,000 kilometres and end in Ottawa on Canada Day.

Mohawk College receives Employer of the Year award from Smart Commute Hamilton

Smart Commute Hamilton recognized Mohawk College's efforts to promote sustainable commuting by making the College the 2011 Employer of the Year for Hamilton. Mohawk received the recognition at Smart Commute's annual awards reception held in Toronto last week.

The Employer of Year Award recognizes organizations for outstanding achievement in the areas of commitment, leadership, innovation and results in the Smart Commute program.

Among its many accomplishments, Mohawk College has:

established the fastest-growing Carpool program in Hamilton, doubling the amount of registered carpoolers at the college;

constructed a new secure bike parking facility for more than 40 bikes;

established 12 new carpool parking spots;

organized an annual Residence Active Living Fair with Smart Commute as a central theme; and

supported a student-led initiative to launch a discounted transit pass program, which is now available to all students at the college for unlimited use of the HSR.

Mohawk has some of the highest participation rates in Hamilton and is a strong supporter of green commute initiatives such as Clean Air Commute, Bike to Work Day and Smart Commute Week.

Commenting on the award, Mohawk's sustainability initiatives coordinator Alan Griffiths says, “We’re absolutely thrilled and honoured to have been chosen for this award. As an innovative and community oriented College, it's important for us to be a leader in programs like this, and to set an example for others to follow. At Mohawk we work hard to walk-the-talk, and we’re truly thankful for the recognition.”

Mohawk College is committed to providing sustainable transportation solutions for students and employees, says Alan. The College works closely with Smart Commute Hamilton to promote environmental awareness and to reduce its carbon footprint.

Run by the City of Hamilton's Public Works department, Smart Commute Hamilton is part of Smart Commute, a program funded and supported by Metrolinx and the municipalities of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. More than 177 employers with a combined total of 430,000 employees participate in the Smart Commute program. Smart Commute Hamilton works with organizations in the City to promote more sustainable modes of commuting and help organizations manage their travel demand effectively.

Mohawk College to offer cyclists more secure bike storage

Mohawk students and staff will soon have a more secure option to store their bicycles on campus.

Starting this fall, a student-led initiative will give cyclists the option to buy a membership to a restricted-access bike shelter located just outside C Wing to the east of the main entrance (south). Similar facilities already exist at several city-owned locations throughout Hamilton.

With room for up to 40 bicycles, the shelter will provide bicycle commuters with a safer way to store their bicycles on campus. Members will receive a key fob that has been specially programmed to access the facility. Once inside the cyclists can either store their bike vertically in one of the hanging racks or on the ground in a traditional bike rack. A simple U-lock will secure both tires and the frame of the bike to the racks. Security cameras will monitor the shelter for added protection.

As an added bonus, members will be given after-hours access to city-owned shelters, some of which are located in the downtown core and at other popular locations such as parks and recreation facilities.

The shelter wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for Mohawk students, says Alan Griffiths, Mohawk's sustainability initiatives coordinator. From the initial research, to the pursuit of funders, Mohawk students have led the process from start to finish. The students were successful in accessing shared funding from the City of Hamilton, Smart Commute Hamilton, and Metrolinx as part of its BikeLinx program.

Mohawk welcomes The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer this Saturday

Thousands of cyclists will spend the night camping out at Mohawk's Fennell Campus as part of The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer Saturday, June 11. For the 4th consecutive year, Mohawk is the halfway point and overnight stop on the 200 km ride from Toronto to Niagara Falls. Mohawk makes the campus grounds available free of charge for an event that has raised $45 million to support cancer research programs at The Princess Margaret. Later this year, Mohawk will also serve as the end of day celebration stop for the cross-Canada Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion 25th Anniversary Relay.
