ARIE Fund project is bringing Design Thinking and Creative Problem Solving to the college

Christine Boyko-Head is working on a project to incorporate design thinking and creative problem solving in the program quality review process.

Christine Boyko-Head wants to change the way we think about our college.

Boyko-Head is from Mohawk’s Centre for Teaching and Learning and is involved with the program review process at the college. She’s received funding from the Applied Research and Innovation in Education (ARIE) Fund to incorporate design thinking and creative problem solving in the program quality review process. She calls it “Designing4Engagement”.

Design Thinking and Parnes/Osborne Creative Problem Designing4Engagement is an exploration of Design Thinking and Creative Problem Solving to enrich faculty and stakeholder engagement in the post-secondary program quality review process. Program review is a systematic, ongoing process intended to positively impact educational quality within a program and across an institution. Integrating Design Thinking and Creative Problem Solving frameworks into the process aims to increase, enhance and enrich stakeholder participation in and ownership of the development and implementation of innovative actionable opportunities.

This project will be undertaken during Mohawk’s 2015/2016 Program Quality Review and will initiate a research collaboration with the Creative Education Foundation (Scituate, MA) and Creative Problem Solving Institute (SUNY Buffalo).

The project aims to generate added value to the program review process at Mohawk College by providing a dynamic, transferable approach to stakeholder involvement, curriculum design and institutional revitalization, specifically in the curation, management and implementation of program review findings.

Mohawk signs Indigenous Education Protocol at dedication of new Indigenous Gathering Space

Mohawk reaffirmed its commitment to Aboriginal students and partners with the signing of theIndigenous Education Protocol on November 2, 2015.

Developed by Colleges and Institutes Canada, the Protocol provides a vision of how colleges can further improve practices to better educate and serve Indigenous peoples. After signing the Protocol, Mohawk dedicated a new Indigenous Gathering Space that is located behind the Harold Cummings Collaboratory. The outdoor gathering space is the first of its kind among colleges in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. The second phase of construction will be completed next year, giving all students a unique classroom and meeting space in the heart of our Fennell campus.

A new specialist high skills major program in advanced manufacturing has been launched by ArcelorMittal Dofasco, Mohawk College and the Hamilton Wentworth Catholic District School Board. High school students in Grades 10, 11 and 12 will get hands-on learning throughout the year at ArcelorMittal Dofasco and Mohawk.

Tumor diagnosis doesn't stop Massage Therapy student from finishing program

Massage Therapy graduate Alexander Mantle was diagnosed with Grade 1 Astrocytoma, a slow-growing tumor at the end of his 3rd semester in Mohawk's Massage Therapy program. Despite the diagnosis, Alexander stayed in the program and graduated with honours this October.

Mohawk professor to investigate using assistive technology to help students with significant learning challenges

Mohawk College professor Jennifer Jahnke is the recipient of an Applied Research and Innovation in Education Fund grant that she will use to investigate whether assistive technology can help improve learning and academic outcomes for students in Mohawk's Community Integration through Cooperative Education (CICE) program.

Can technology facilitate academic independence for students who face significant learning challenges?

That’s the question that Jennifer Jahnke wants to answer.

Jahnke has been awarded funding from the Applied Research and Innovation in Education Fund. Her project will investigate if Assistive Technology Training can help improve the learning and academic outcomes for students in Mohawk’s Community Integration through Cooperative Education (CICE) program. CICE students at Mohawk are heavily dependent upon learning facilitators for support with the completion of homework, assignments and projects. Providing an assistive technology enriched environment could significantly support CICE students’ independent learning and improve their overall learning outcomes.

This project will be completed in partnership with researchers at Brock University’s Faculty of Education and Department of Teacher Education and with start-up technology companies such as Strategic Transitions Inc..

The project hopes to demonstrate that students with intellectual disabilities in the CICE post-secondary program have significantly high learning outcomes and more independence when using assistive technology. The research from this project will provide information to either support the ongoing use of assistive technology in the CICE program or to encourage further research into additional learning resources that can be used to support CICE students.

McKeil School of Business professor Lisa Cuncic-Pegg is investigating how to integrate case-scenario and case-simulation teaching in Ontario Graduate Certificate programs.

Real-world thinking requires real-world teaching- and McKeil School of Business professor Lisa Cuncic-Pegg is on the job to make it happen.

Cuncic-Pegg has been awarded funding from the Applied Research and Innovation in Education (ARIE) Fund to investigate how to integrate case-simulation and case-scenario teaching in Ontario Graduate Certificate programs.

Her ARIE project will explore the implementation of the case-simulation and case-scenario teaching and learning methodology within one of Mohawk’s post-graduate certificate programs. These teaching methods support an authentic, real-world approach to developing professional skills and promote a strong connection with industry partners.

This project will support the adoption of case-simulation and case-scenario teaching in other graduate certificate programs and will develop support materials to facilitate further implementation of this teaching strategy.

Mohawk College opens first City School in North Hamilton (media release)

HAMILTON, ON (Oct. 2, 2015) – The first City School by Mohawk officially opened at the Eva Rothwell Resource Centre in North Hamilton this morning.

In consultation with neighbourhood residents, Mohawk will deliver tuition-free courses, lectures, workshops and services for youth, adults and seniors living in the Keith, Sherman, Jamesville, Beasley, Crown Point, Gibson / Lansdowne neighbourhoods.

City School by Mohawk is part of the college’s ongoing commitment to increase access to post-secondary education for all Hamiltonians. In collaboration with college partners, Mohawk plans to open City Schools in six priority neighborhoods over the next three years.

City School by Mohawk aligns with the Province's Community Hubs in Ontario Action Plan and the City of Hamilton's Neighbourhood Action Strategy

Mohawk launched an access strategy in 2010 to help increase post-secondary participation rates in Hamilton’s priority neighbourhoods.

City School by Mohawk builds on the success of Mohawk’s College in Motion team which serves more than 1,000 youth annually at over 30 schools and community centres throughout Hamilton. More than 800 students have gone on to attend and graduate from Mohawk.

Mohawk invested $60,000 to renovate a former classroom at the Eva Rothwell Resource Centre. The work was carried out by instructors and students in Mohawk’s Building Renovation program.

Neighbourhood residents have asked Mohawk to deliver academic upgrading and college preparation courses, job readiness workshops, general interest lectures and mentoring programs.

Hamilton couple gives the gift of a college education to an entire North Hamilton neighbourhood (media release)

Dr. Douglas Barber and his wife June Barber are the first donors to City School by Mohawk. During City School's official opening at the Eva Rothwell Resource Centre, the Barbers were the first to sign a commemorative school ruler made from a 100-year-old reclaimed church pew from a Hamilton church.

HAMILTON (Oct. 2, 2015) – Dr. Douglas Barber and his wife June have made the first donation to City School by Mohawk.

The Barbers are donating $70,000 to support City School by Mohawk programs and $30,000 to establish scholarships for Mohawk students who serve as peer mentors at City School.

Dr. Barber was the co-founder of Linear Technology and President and CEO of Gennum Corporation while Mrs. Barber was the founder of artisan collective Textures Craftworks.

The Barbers were recognized this morning during Mohawk’s official opening of its first City School by Mohawk in a renovated classroom at the Eva Rothwell Resource Centre in North Hamilton. What do design thinking, entrepreneurship, assistive technology and drones have in common?

More than you think- they are all topics that Mohawk faculty and staff will be studying over the next ten months.

The Applied Research and Innovation in Education (ARIE) Fund supports faculty and staff research and innovation activities at Mohawk College. Funding will support projects that focus on applied research, teaching and learning, and entrepreneurship.

HAMILTON (Sept. 18, 2015) – A draft of Mohawk College's new strategic plan is up for comment and review until Oct. 16.

With a vision of Future Ready. Learning for Life, Mohawk's 2016-2020 strategic plan identifies 17 priorities that include reducing financial barriers and delivering an education that transforms Mohawk students into the most experienced and employable college graduates.

Mohawk is welcoming ideas on how to achieve each priority. The plan can be reviewed at strategicplan.mohawkcollege.ca and all comments are anonymous.

The draft plan was written following months of consultation with students, faculty, staff and community partners and will go to Mohawk’s Board of Governors for final review and approval in November.

“We've drafted a bold plan that will challenge and inspire us to make a great college even better for our students, their future employers and the communities we serve,” says President Ron McKerlie. “We’re inviting the community to review our plan and help chart the future of their community college.”

Mohawk College educates and serves 30,000 full-time, part-time and apprenticeship students at three campuses in Hamilton. Mohawk has been rated number one for overall student satisfaction among all colleges in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area for five consecutive years and has been recognized as one of Canada’s greenest employers and a top employer in the Hamilton and Niagara for the past two years.

From left: Alvaro Concha, Trade Commissioner for the Nation of Columbia, Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger and Bob Seguin, Direcor of Economic Development for the Region of Niagara, say they will continue to take advantage of the connections made during the 2015 Pan Am Games to encourage economic development opportunities between the two regions and the Nation of Columbia.

The 2015 Pan Am Games have provided a significant opportunity to the Hamilton-Niagara Region for economic development – both from a short-term and long-term perspective. Both municipalities have taken advantage of the opportunity, working together to develop a detailed “Playbook” of programs and events designed to promote investment, trade and provide exposure to companies within this Region.

Mohawk hosted Pan Am Investment Playbook events, including the announcement with Columbia that took place on Tuesday, July 21. The College looks forward to working with the City of Hamilton to pursue economic development opportunities that come from the games being hosted in Ontario.

Michelle Abella named 2015-16 Female Apprentice Coach for Mohawk Women’s basketball team

Apprentice Coach Michelle Abella joins Mohawk Women's Basketball Coach Kevin Duffy for the 2015-16 season.

Michelle Abella is ready to take the next step in her evolving coaching career. Already a certified Level 2 coach, Abella returns to Mohawk College this season as an apprentice coach under the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association's (CCAA) Female Apprentice Coach Program. The former Mountaineer Rookie of the Year also played varsity basketball for the Sheridan Bruins in the OCAA.

The CCAA's Female Apprentice Coach Program allows young female coaches to gain experience and be mentored by seasoned coaches. The goal is to develop and grow a rich source of potential coaches within the ranks of graduating student athletes with the hopes that they will go on to work with college athletics teams.

“Michelle was a tenacious player,” said Michelle Ball, Director Engagement and Athletics at Mohawk. “During the last few years she has transferred her on-court attributes towards sharing her love of the game through coaching.”

Abella was recently the head coach for the St. Jean de Brebeuf Junior Girls team. She’s also worked with U13, U14, U15 and U16 teams.

“An opportunity such as this will serve as a key stepping-stone into another role,” said Abella. “Coaching at a high level will allow me to improve on my current skill set and will help me to learn new ones.”

Abella expects to work with the student-athletes by monitoring their skills through error detection and correction, individual workouts and identifying player personnel.

“I will provide feedback to the coaching staff and athletes with regards to new and effective ideas to improve in-game strategies, player rotations and team concepts,” she said.

Abella also plans to act as a positive role model on and off the court, helping to build character, self-esteem, and confidence to maximize the efforts of the student-athletes.

“We feel that the numerous responsibilities and roles that she will experience with our team this year, will help bring her coaching to another level,” said mentor coach Kevin Duffy.

“I’m excited about Michelle’s interest in giving back to the College game and developing as a female apprentice coach at the CCAA level,” said Ball.

Mohawk Mountaineers head coach Kevin Duffy has more than 25 years of coaching experience at the elementary, high school, club, college and university levels.

And he’s recently built a successful program at Mohawk College, where the Mountaineers are coming off back-to-back OCAA silver medals.

“Coach Duffy has built the Mountaineers program during the last six years from a team that was not a playoff contender to provincial silver medalists the last two years,” said Ball.

“His interest in developing players and young coaches, along with his experience as a coach, teacher and role model will make him an exceptional mentor coach.”

Duffy relishes the opportunity to be a mentor coach in the CCAA’s Female Apprentice Coach Program and is looking forward to having a former player back in the fold.

“We feel that the winning culture we have developed would serve as a great environment for Michelle to learn and grow in both personally and professionally,” said Duffy, a certified Level 2 coach.

“The role-modelling she will receive from my outstanding assistant coaches will also be for her betterment and provide support and guidance for her into one day becoming a head coach herself at the post-secondary level,” he said.

The Hamilton Spectator has this story about the expanded community garden at Mohawk's Fennell Campus. The community garden project began with just 12 plots in 2013. Mohawk's Sustainability Office decided to expand the project in 2014 due to increasing demand. The community garden now hosts 47 plots for students and community members to use.

Graphics students win silver at design competitions

Mohawk Graphics student Dilek Duman has won a silver medal in a prestigious Student Design Competition, put on by the Packaging Consortium (PAC). The students had to come up with a design for a Walmart brand. Dilek graduated from Mohawk College in June. Here's a look at Dilek's entry:

Mohawk Broadcasting Program wins national award from Broadcast Educators Association

Mohawk’s Broadcasting Television program has received a Broadcast Educators Association of Canada Award in the category of Commercial / PSA Production.

The award winning commercial “the Mohawk Campus Store” was produced by graduating student Storm Harding. Check out Storm’s award winning entry here: https://vimeo.com/125246090

Storm was instrumental in overseeing the visual production and brand of the Mohawk Media and Entertainment Showcase this past April and the Alumni profiles that were shown at the Distinction Awards last fall.

"The Broadcast Educators Association of Canada is honouring the outstanding work produced by its students and recent graduates. Judging over 220 entries from colleges and universities from across the country wasn’t easy," said Judging Coordinator and Loyalist TV and New Media Production, Professor Paul Papadopoulos. “The overall quality of the audio and video productions continues to amaze the judges.”

Commercial and PSA production in the Broadcasting Television program is taught under the direction of Brian Willrich. Mohawk Broadcasting Television program has received previous awards BEAC Awards: 2014 Long Drama, 2013 Series Production, and in 2011 News Production.

The award will be presented later this month in Banbury B.C.

HAMILTON (April 23, 2015) – Mohawk College has been named one of Canada’s greenest employers for the second year in a row by the editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers.

Mohawk is the only college in Ontario, and one of two colleges in Canada, to make the 2015 list of greenest employers. The employers were recognized in a special feature in The Globe and Mail.

“Mohawk is committed to environmental sustainability,” says President Ron McKerlie. “We practice what we teach and we’re proud of the environmental leadership and stewardship demonstrated by our Sustainability Office, students, staff and faculty.”

Some of the reasons why Mohawk was selected as one of Canada’s greenest employers include:

A commitment to a 20 per cent carbon reduction target below the 2007 baseline by the year 2020 as part the college’s Environmental Management Plan. Mohawk has exceeded this target by reaching a 24 per cent reduction by the end of 2012 and has set a new target of a 30 per cent reduction by 2020.

An environmental program created by and for students to promote sustainable living on and off the campus.

Numerous initiatives to encourage faculty, staff and students to consider alternative transit, including discounted transit passes, unlimited transit for full-time students, an on-campus bicycle loan program and online carpool registrations through the Smart Commute program.

An on-campus cooperative community-based garden program with garden plots available for individuals, student groups and departments.

Design of the 64,000 square foot David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre to meet LEED Gold certification standards, with a commitment to meet LEED standards for all future campus construction and renovations.

Mohawk teaches and serves more than 22,500 full-time, part-time and continuing education students at three campuses in Hamilton. Mohawk was named one of the top employers in Hamilton-Niagara in 2015 and was ranked number one for student satisfaction among all colleges in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area for the fifth consecutive year.

Media release: Mohawk College earns high marks from students in latest provincial survey

April 15, 2015 (HAMILTON) – Hamilton is home to the most satisfied college students in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) for the fifth year in a row.

Mohawk College ranks number one in overall student satisfaction among the six GTHA colleges in the latest Key Performance Indicator (KPI) survey results released today by the Government of Ontario. Mohawk has finished first among GTHA colleges since 2010.

Survey results also show that 85.7 per cent of Mohawk’s most recent graduates found employment within six months of graduation.

The Government of Ontario and the province’s 24 public colleges have carried out annual Key Performance Indicator surveys since 1998. The most recent KPI survey was administered by two independent research firms from March 2014 to February 2015.

New applied research partnerships between colleges and local businesses will bolster entrepreneurship

The Honourable Minister of State (Science and Technology), Ed Holder, joined by David Sweet, Member of Parliament for Ancaster—Dundas—Flamborough—Westdale, today announced over $40 million in grants to colleges across Canada to support applied research and development activities with industry. The 38 projects will create jobs and opportunities in key areas including manufacturing, green buildings and mobile technology, while training the next generation of highly skilled Canadians. Colleges also received support to purchase specialized research equipment.

The Minister made the announcement in Hamilton, at Mohawk College’s Additive Manufacturing Resource Centre (AMRC). The college is receiving $2.3 million to provide additive manufacturing capabilities to local companies to develop and enhance their products. Mohawk’s unique approach uses metal alloys, rather than plastic, and fuses these together with high-powered lasers. Projects at AMRC will focus on creating aerospace and satellite parts, tools for early detection and treatment of breast cancer and new 3D-printed bicycle parts.

The funding announced today was awarded through the College and Community Innovation (CCI) Program and the College Industry Innovation Fund (CIIF) Program.

Quick Facts:

Today’s announcement includes over $34 million through the CCI Program, which is managed by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, in collaboration with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

Since its launch in 2009, the CCI program has supported 102 colleges across Canada, through over 1124 projects and $293.3 million.

The Government of Canada is also investing nearly $2 million through the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s CIIF Program. The CIIF seeks to enhance the capacity of colleges to support business innovation in Canada by providing them with key industry-relevant equipment to foster partnerships with the private sector.

Since the creation of the CIIF in 2012, over $22 million in industry-relevant infrastructure support has been awarded to enhance the capacity of colleges to support business innovation in Canada and to foster partnerships with the private sector.

Recently, Prime Minister Stephen Harper delivered on the government’s commitment to provide an updated science and technology strategy. The strategy, Seizing Canada’s Moment, is a vision and a roadmap for strengthening Canada’s position as a global leader in scientific research while looking to harness greater Canadian research and development that create jobs, increase prosperity and improve the quality of life of Canadians.

Immigration is expected to account for all the future growth of Hamilton’s population and workforce. Mohawk aims to double international student enrollment and encourage more international students to live and work in Hamilton after graduation.

Mohawk announced a $5,000 sponsorship of Global Hamilton Connect events during the task force meeting. A member group of Hamilton HIVE, Global Hamilton Connects welcomes international students and young newcomers to the community.

Mohawk loses to Lethbridge in bronze medal game at CCAA Men's Basketball Championship

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks won the bronze medal at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Basketball Championship in Hamilton Ontario Saturday (March 21). The Alberta team defeated the host Mohawk Mountaineers 106-92 at the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre.

Kodiaks' Player of the game Travis Butt scored 31 points and had five assists to lead the attack. Chaz Johnson scored 31 and added 10 assists for Lethbridge, which trailed 28-24 after the first quarter and were even at 46 at the break. Mohawk, playing its third game in less than 24 hours seemed to run out of steam from that point on. But Lethbridge, with not much more time to rest, kept coming and outscored their hosts by 20 points in the third quarter for a 79-59 lead. Mohawk managed to close the gap slightly in the final period but were too far back.

Matt Fennell, the top player in Canada and one of four Mountaineers playing their final game for Mohawk, was his team's Player of the Game with 41 points, including 33 in the first half when he sank seven 3-point shots in nine attempts.

Kojo Afari had 14 points.

Day 2 Recap CCAA Men's Basketball Championship

The Vancouver Island University Mariners from Nanaimo BC, will meet the Humber Hawks from Etobicoke Ontario, in the final of the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Basketball Championship in Hamilton.

Friday (March 20), VIU squeezed by the host Mohawk Mountaineers 92-88 before another full house at Mohawk's David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre.

Justin King scored 23 points to pace the Mariners to victory. Matt Fennell had 27 points in a losing cause for the Mountaineers, in a game which went right down to the dying seconds.

Humber scored a comfortable 81-70 decision over the number one ranked team in the country, the Holland Hurricanes, from PEI.

Chad Bewley had 23 points for the Hawks, while Eamon Morrissy scored 24 for the Hurricanes.

Earlier, the Langara Falcons from Vancouver kept their bronze medal hopes alive in a 103-70 romp over the Medicine Hat Rattlers of Alberta.

Jitinder Lohcham scored 22 points for the Falcons, while Jaamel Slack recorded 15 points for the Rattlers.

Finally, the Lethbridge Kodiaks will battle on the bronze medal side following their 89-83 verdict over the Champlain Saint-Lambert Cavaliers of Quebec.

Christopher Maughan had 26 points and 18 rebounds for the Kodiaks and Ahmadu Tijani Umar collected 25 points for the Cavaliers.

Saturday's final day schedule shapes up this way.

Lethbridge will play Holland College in a bronze medal semi final game at 10:00 a.m. and then Langara meets Mohawk at 12:00 p.m. in the other semi. The winner of those two games returns at 6:00 p.m. for the bronze medal game.

At 2:00 p.m. Medicine Hat plays Champlain in a consolation contest.

The gold medal match between Humber and VIU will tip off at 8:30 p.m.

The semi finalists have been determined at the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association Men's Basketball Championship at Mohawk College in Hamilton.

The top ranked team in the CCAA, the Holland Hurricanes from Charlottetown Prince Edward Island, will meet the fourth ranked Humber Hawks from Etobicoke Ontario and the championship hosts, the Mohawk Mountaineers, seeded third, will play number two Vancouver Island University Mariners of Victoria in the other semi.

In quarter final action Thursday (March 19), Holland College scored an 80-63 decision over the eighth seeded Medicine Hat Rattlers from Alberta. D.J. Wright had 19 points to lead the Island squad. Michael Farion had 16 for the Rattlers.

Humber beat number five Langara Falcons from BC 77-71, as Gibson Eduful scored 18 for the Hawks and Jitinder Lohcham notched 18 for the Falcons.

VIU topped number seven Lethbridge of Alberta 66-62. Justin King scored 26 points for the Mariners and Travis Butt notched 15 for the Kodiaks.

Mohawk, of Hamilton, just got by sixth seeded Champlain Saint-Lambert Cavaliers of Quebec 79-77 as Matt Fennell scored 28 points. J.J. Hamel-Carey delivered 21 points for Champlain.

Friday, the action picks up at 1:00 pm as Medicine Hat plays Langara, while at 3:00 pm Lethbridge meets Champlain. Both of those games feature teams still in the hunt for a bronze medal. At 6:00 pm it's Holland College versus Humber followed at 8:30 pm by Mohawk and Vancouver Island University. The winners of the two semi finals will meet in the gold medal game Saturday night.

March 10, 2015 – The Mohawk Mountaineers punched their ticket to Nationals last year when they were awarded the 2015 CCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship.

Regardless, the Mountaineers earned their way into the tournament by capturing the OCAA Championship with a victory over the Humber Hawks. In doing so, Mohawk was rewarded with the No. 3 seed for the tournament, which will be held March 18-21 in Hamilton, ON.

Meanwhile, the defending champion Langara Falcons are back once again – this time as a wildcard team after being defeated in the PACWEST Championship final by the VIU Mariners.

The Championship Awards Banquet will be held on Wednesday, March 18 at the Sheraton Hotel, where the CCAA Player of the Year, Coach of the Year and All-Canadians will be honoured.

Holland Hurricanes (1) vs. Medicine Hat Rattlers (8)

Holland, led by All-Canadian D.J. Wright, needed overtime to defeat Crandall 96-91 for the ACAA Championship. The Hurricanes finished atop the ACAA with a perfect 18-0 record in the regular season. They’ll face the wildcard team from the ACAC, the Medicine Hat Rattlers and All-Canadian Guilherme Carabagiale Fuck. Medicine Hat, 16-8 in the regular season, were defeated by Lethbridge in the conference final.

VIU Mariners (2) vs. Lethbridge Kodiaks (7)

The VIU Mariners steamrolled through the PACWEST this season with a 20-1 record. All-Canadian Justin King and the Mariners outlasted the defending CCAA champion Langara 82-76 in the conference final. VIU will face Lethbridge, the ACAC champions. The Kodiaks finished second in the South Division with an 18-6 record and knocked off Medicine Hat in the conference final.

Mohawk Mountaineers (3) vs. Champlain Saint-Lambert Cavaliers (6)

All-Canadian Matthew Fennell and the not-your-average host Mountaineers earned the No. 3 seed by capturing the OCAA Championship. Mohawk, 15-3 in the regular season, defeated division rival Humber 84-74 in the conference final. They’ll face the Saint-Lambert Cavaliers, the RSEQ regular season (14-4) and playoff champions. Saint-Lambert, led by All-Canadian Kasheem Thomas, downed Vanier in the RSEQ final.

Humber Hawks (4) vs. Langara Falcons (5)

The Humber Hawks, defeated by Mohawk in the OCAA Championship final, will represent Ontario. Humber finished atop the OCAA’s West Division with a 17-1 record. They’ll face the defending National Champion Falcons, a wildcard team. Langara, defeated by VIU in the PACWEST Championship final, is led by All-Canadian Jitinder Lohcham. The Falcons were 18-3 in the regular season.

Mohawk Journalism student awarded prestigious Michael Monty Scholarship

First-year Journalism student Jillianne King-Goddard receives Michael Monty Scholarship from Ontario Association of Broadcasters

When first-year Mohawk College journalism student Jillianne King-Goddard won the prestigious Michael Monty Scholarship from the Ontario Association of Broadcasters Monday, it was a proud moment – but it also represented a victory in her struggle against a hidden hardship.

In addition to being one of the most talented and hard-working students in the journalism program, Jillianne has also battled mental illness.

Jillianne was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder (with anxiety/dissociative behaviours) in 2011 after being admitted into a psychiatric unit for suicidal tendencies.

She struggled with mental health during her youth, but her condition started to worsen when she was 19. Eventually she was too physically weak and anxiety-ridden to leave her house.

Despite these obstacles Jillianne has used her determination to succeed and her strength of character to build a life as a successful student and leader at Mohawk College. And her goal of becoming a journalist has been a driving force.

That drive was recognized by the OAB during its annual Career Day on Monday. She won the Michael Monty Scholarship in recognition of her academic excellence and extensive volunteer work.

“I’m very humbled because I know it’s such a big honour,” says Jillianne. “I know there are many other students that work really hard on a daily basis.”

Volunteering is a huge part of Jillianne’s life. She gives her time to a wide variety of organizations, from the Aids Crisis Response Team, to assisting disadvantaged women in Uganda launch their own businesses.

“Because people have invested so much in me, I want to be that difference in someone else’s life,” she says. “I want to be somebody who inspires other people or gives them what they need to also see a purpose for themselves.”

Jillianne’s professors saw her commitment to the community from the moment she applied to Mohawk.

“When I saw her application, I thought she was much older than she was, simply because of the amount of volunteer work she had done,” says Mohawk College Journalism Coordinator Kurt Muller. “She’s been a real asset to the program, and a pleasure to have in class.”

Jillianne is open about her struggle with Bipolar Disorder. She wants her story to help end the stigma over mental illness, and help others get the support they need.

“For me, having people believe in me is a huge part of continuing to thrive,” she says. “They can help me carry my load when I don’t have the strength to anymore.”

OSHAWA, MARCH 8, 2015: For the first time since 2012, the Mohawk men's basketball team is the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association champion. The Mountaineers defeated the Humber Hawks 84-74 in the gold medal game at the 2015 belairdirect OCAA Men's Basketball Championship at Durham College in Oshawa Sunday.

Mohawk came storming out of the gate to take a 9-0 lead before Humber discovered their game, but still trailed 19-14 after the first quarter.

The Mountaineers, getting some timely three point shooting and strong work on the boards, increased their lead to 44-31 at the half. They led by 19 points (65-46) after three quarters and when Jeff Hunt sank a big three-pointer to start the final period to put his team up by 22, it really looked like they would coast to victory.

However, the Hawks would have none of that and with an 11-0 run and forcing the the Mountaineers into several turnovers and mental mistakes, Humber whittled their deficit down to seven points (77-70) and the game was suddenly up for grabs. But Mohawk finally recovered and kept their lead in double digits pretty well the rest of the way. This despite the fact the Hawks outscored them 28-19 in the final quarter.

Statistically, Championship MVP Matt Fennell had 26 points,11 rebounds and came up with five turnovers for the Mountaineers. Matt Savel had 21 points, six assists and three turnovers. Andrew Cicuttini scored 14, added eight boards and forced five turnovers. Lamar Barr scored 10 points, contributed nine rebounds, had three assists, five turnovers and three blocked shots.

For Humber, Kenny Ejim scored 22 points and Junior Davis had 20.

Both teams will represent the OCAA in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association National Championship at Mohawk College March 19-21.

Host Durham College won the bronze medal, defeating St. Lawrence-Kingston 66-51.

As an added bonus, the Mountaineers will compete for the national basketball title at the the 2015 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Men’s Basketball Championship, which is being held at Mohawk College's Fennell Campus next week.

Eight teams from all across Canada will be competing in this year’s tournament. The first game will be Thursday, Mar. 19, 2015 at 1 p.m. in the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre at Mohawk College. The complete game schedule is available on the CCAA’s website. The tournament is open to the public. Tickets can be purchased at the Athletics office in R105 (David Braley Athletic and Recreation at Mohawk College’s Fennell Campus). Adult tournament passes are $30, student/senior passes are $20. Full and part time Mohawk day students are free with a One Card. Single day passes are $10 adult, $5 students/seniors. The event is presented by Budds’ BMW of Hamilton.

Financial Services students raise $22,000 for Food4Kids

Christine DiCarlo`s second year Financial Services students raised more than $22,000 for Hamilton-based charity Food4Kids.

Mohawk College’s Financial Services students have raised more than $22,000 for Food4kids, a local charity committed to making sure that children aged 5-14 don’t hungry the weekends when they can`t access in-school food programs.

``The money means so much to Food4Kids,`` says Lena Bassford, Executive Director of Food4Kids. ``It will give us an opportunity to expand services to include more children in the program, so they don`t have to worry about where their next meal will come from.``

Lena estimates that there are between 1,200 – 2,000 children who go hungry every weekend in Hamilton. The $22,000 is enough to feed up to 60 of those children, she adds. It will also be used to support Food4Kidz Summer Food program, which supports 400 children through the summer months.

Food4Kids accepts food and cash donations. The food is delivered to participating schools every Friday. The unmarked packages are quietly tucked into the students’ bags and knapsacks before they leave for the weekend. Each package contains enough healthy, nutritious food for an entire weekend.

This is the second year in a row that Christine’s Financial Services students have raised funds for Food4Kids. In previous years, the class focused its efforts on getting people to donate to Canadian Blood Services and raised funds for the Rotary Club. The annual challenge helps students hone their sales skills, which they will need to approach prospective clients if they want to succeed in the Financial Services sector. It’s also chance for the students to impress potential employers.

Topping this year’s list of students who raised the most funds was Financial Services student and MSA President Elect Luke Baylis who raised more than $5,400. Luke was followed by Justin Drinkwater who raised $3,690, Aaron Neal who raised $2,640, Carlee McQueen who raised $2,410, and Katy Davoli who raised $1,000.

This is the first time the second-year Financial Services students have raised funds for Food4Kids. In previous years, the class has focused its efforts on getting people to donate to Canadian Blood Services and last year raised funds for the Rotary Club.
