The Hamilton Spectator has this story about a groundbreaking partnership between Mohawk College and Sheridan College that will improve access and ease of transfer between the two institutions. The MOU, which was signed by Mohawk President Rob MacIsaac and Sheridan President Jeff Zabudsk today at Sheridan's Hazel McCallion Campus in Mississauga, is the first of its kind in Ontario, and will see the two colleges explore opportunities to co-locate programs at each other’s campuses in their respective areas of academic strength.

In the news: New ads promote Ontario colleges as the leading-edge choice

Colleges Ontario launched a new multi-media advertising campaign Tuesday that promotes an Ontario college education as the best path to many of the leading-edge careers in the knowledge economy. The theme of the new ads (TV Spot 1 & TV Spot 2) is "Higher Education for the New World." The ads show students and parents reassessing the options available to students these days, supported by computer-animated graphics that promote careers in areas such as game development, biotechnology, and forensics. The campaign builds on Colleges Ontario's previous "It's all about M.E." and "Obay" campaigns.

High school seniors in the region and across the province can have Down With Webster perform at their June prom through a new College Sounds Great contest launched today by Colleges Ontario.

The contest encourages teens to describe why college education is an excellent postsecondary option. The top 10 high schools with the largest share of entries will be finalists for the contest with one of Canada's top recording acts.

"What could be better than encouraging students to pursue higher education and getting to relive our own high school proms with a performance at yours,” said Tyler Armes of Down With Webster.

“This is a great opportunity to get students thinking about their options after high school,” said Linda Franklin, the president and CEO of Colleges Ontario. “It challenges students to be creative and to learn more about higher education and the full range of programs available to students today.”

Students can enter the contest by submitting a photo and a 50 to 250-word paragraph, or by making a video, explaining why “college sounds great.” Entries will be submitted on the website, www.collegesoundsgreat.com.

The College Sounds Great contest is part of the Ontario colleges’ ongoing effort to encourage students to explore the range of postsecondary programs available at both college and university, and to choose programs that best suit their interests and strengths. Colleges offer a wide range of programs in a number of areas, including business, advertising, health care, IT, the culinary arts, the skilled trades, and much more.

Mohawk grad Sarah among Premier's Award receipients recognized in the Globe and Mail

A full-page ad celebrating Mohawk grad Sarah Moir and the six other 2010 Premier's Award recipients was published this weekend in the Globe and Mail, courtesy of Colleges Ontario. The ad also lists all of the nominees, including Mohawk nominees Karyn Callaghan, Bill Kelly, Cathy Cardy, Susan Gregoroff and Gord Lewis.

Mohawk Music students take centre stage at Queen's Park and Colleges Ontario conference

Five Mohawk Music students performed in Toronto yesterday during Hamilton Day at Queen's Park and the annual Colleges Ontario conference.

In a repeat performance from the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Fennell Campus, Jessie Filice sang the national anthem before hundreds of conference delegates at the noon-hour Colleges Ontario Awards Luncheon.

Rob Chapman (guitar), Brandon Clarke (bass), Vince Waters (drums) and Francis Smith (saxophone) performed a noon-hour jazz concert at Queen's Park to kick-off Hamilton Day and then did three sets during the Premier's Awards at the Colleges Ontario conference.
