Mohawk celebrates Day of Pink

It's Day of Pink at Mohawk College. Students (l-r) Kate Copley, Sarah Bowerbank and Kailah Taylor came out to celebrate diversity and bring awareness to marginalized groups at the college. The event runs until 1 p.m. today and is located outside the Student Centre (G Wing) entrance. Come out for free hotdogs and games.

Students and faculty in Mohawk's Child and Youth Worker program hosted Day of Pink activities at the Fennell Campus today. Day of Pink is the international day against bullying, discrimination and homophobia in schools and communities.

The primary focus of this year's activities was raising awareness about homophobia, said Mohawk professor and event organizer Marco Felvus. The students worked with The Well, a Hamilton based agency dedicated to supporting gay, lesbian, bisexuals and transgender communities in the city.

The main message this year was "please don't stand-by, stand up" when you witness an act of homophobia, or any other discriminatory act. Students got a free barbeque lunch if they participated in one of the activities the CYW students set up that included answering questions about what to do in certain situations.

Students and faculty in Mohawk's Child and Youth Worker program will host Day of Pink activities outdoors at the Fennell Campus and next to the Student Centre on April 13. Day of Pink is the international day against bullying, discrimination and homophobia in schools and communities. More than 500 students took part in last year's Day of Pink at Mohawk.
