The additional funding is supporting 10 new collaborations between Mohawk and small- and medium- sized enterprises (SMEs). Building on a recent $1.6 million investment by the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) and Ontario Research Fund (ORF) to establish the Mohawk eHealth Innovation and Development Centre, iDeaWORKS has entered into several collaborations with SMEs focused on health care IT. These projects will help companies develop innovative mHealth applications and increase the reach and functional capabilities of their software solutions.

“Thanks to the continuing support of FedDev Ontario, more students at Mohawk College will gain invaluable experience working with our health care partners on applied research projects,” says Cheryl Jensen, Mohawk’s Vice President Academic. “These projects help our partners bring innovations to market and prepare our students to do the jobs of today and create the jobs of tomorrow.”

• This is the second $750,000 FedDev Ontario contribution to Mohawk.


• Mohawk’s iDeaWORKS received a $750,000 contribution through FedDev Ontario’s Applied Research and Commercialization initiative in 2010.


• The 2010 contribution enabled the College to work with 15 SMEs in southern Ontario.


• The projects spanned a range of sectors: mobile technology, software development, energy, advanced materials and robotics.

Below are some examples of recent FedDev Ontario-supported projects:

• Bay Area Research Logistics (BARL) – Located in Hamilton, Bay Area Research Logistics is a global, clinical trial logistics organization focused on helping the global healthcare industry to successfully develop new medications and treatments. BARL specializes in clinical trial drug packaging, labeling, storage and distribution for investigators and research organizations. Mohawk students are developing a web-based application to give trial sponsors real time, transparent and accurate information on their trial logistic details. This will help both the research community and BARL optimize their efficiencies and give trial sponsors transparency to the drug packaging and logistical process. • MedTel Software Ltd.– Mohawk staff and students are collaborating with MedTel, a Hamilton-based company that develops and supports software products designed to help physicians manage patient information. This project will transition MedTel’s Acute Pain Service (APS) Manager from a client server to a cloud-based solution, making the product available to a much larger market. • VitalHub - VitalHub solves the challenges faced by doctors and nurses who are frustrated with hospital IT systems. Their software, VitalHub Chart, gives users a single, intuitive interface to patient information from their hospital’s EMR systems on an iPad®, iPhone®, or iPod® Touch. Mohawk students and staff are helping VitalHub expand their market reach by porting the VitalHub Chart application to the latest version of the Android platform.
