Engineering Technology students and faculty are already working with 43 industry, education and government partners on applied research projects. Digital images are turned into three-dimensional prototypes and parts made out of titanium, aluminum, nickel, stainless steel, bronze and other metals.

The $2 million centre received $720,000 in funding from both the Canada Foundation for Innovation and the Ontario Research Fund, with additional support from industry partners. Mohawk is one of only three postsecondary education institutions in Canada with the capacity to manufacture metal parts for industry.

Additive manufacturing joins digital health and smart grid technologies as Mohawk’s three areas for applied research.

QUOTES

“Our recently announced Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy expands the scope of our government’s targeted research priorities to include advanced manufacturing. The Canada Foundation for Innovation and our government are proud to partner with Mohawk College in developing Canadian innovations to improve our manufacturing sector, create jobs, and improve the quality of life of Canadians.” – The Hon. Ed Holder, Federal Minister of State (Science and Technology)

“Ontario is thrilled to support this partnership, which will help provide cutting-edge resources to companies and train future generations to become leaders in additive manufacturing — a field that promises to help drive advanced manufacturing, keep Ontario competitive in the global economy and create highly skilled, well-paying jobs here at home.” – The Hon. Reza Moridi, Ontario Minister of Research and Innovation

“Canada’s colleges work with the private sector in state-of-the-art research labs to create innovative products and services. These prototypes can be applied rapidly, giving Canada’s manufacturing industry a unique advantage in the highly competitive global marketplace.” - Gilles Patry, President and CEO of the Canada Foundation for Innovation

“Our Additive Manufacturing Resource Centre helps strengthen our region’s global competitiveness on two fronts. Advanced manufacturers can test and develop new and improved products while our students work with emerging technologies and go into the workforce as highly skilled, future-ready graduates.” - Mohawk College President Ron McKerlie

After claiming the first set 25-22, the Mountaineers found themselves in trouble dropping two straight sets to the OCAA’s top ranked team the Humber Hawks by scores of 25-16 and 25-22.

With their backs against the wall, the Mountaineers staved off elimination multiple times and eventually got the better of the Hawks in an incredible 30-28 fourth set sending the match to a fifth set tiebreak.

In the game’s final frame the Mountaineers carried all the momentum and clinched the gold medal with a 15-8 set to win the match 3-2.

Mohawk’s Trevor McLaughlin put together a 21 point performance in the final game including 18 kills, one service ace and twio stuff blocks, while adding 14 digs. Eric Danecke had 13 kills, one ace and two blocks. Bryce Marcussen contributed nine kills, one ace and three blocks. Terrel Bramwell who was named the championships most valuable player had a brilliant performance in the final for Humber as he posted 27 kills in helping his team earn the silver medal.

For the Mountaineers it’s their fourth consecutive year medaling at the OCAA Championship and their first gold medal since the 2007-08 season. For Humber they have now medaled in four of the last five years and return to the podium after being shut out a season ago.

Both the Mountaineers and the Humber Hawks have qualified for the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Volleyball National Championship which takes place March 4th through 8th at Briercrest College and Seminary in Caronport, Saskatchewan.

After winning each of their semi-final matches in the 3rd place side the Fanshawe Falcons and Algonquin Thunder squared off for the bronze medal in their second games of the day. Algonquin, who were pushed to the limit by the Durham Lords in a five set marathon in the semis, seemed to run out of gas in the bronze final.

Fanshawe came out aggressive leading to a clean 3-0 sweep over the Thunder by set scores of 25-19, 25-16, and 25-22 to earn the bronze medal at the Championship.

Derek Braun was named player of the game for Fanshawe after a 13 point effort while Ian McAlpine was awarded player of the game for Algonquin with a 7 point effort.

The bronze medal for Fanshawe is the first time they have won a medal at the event since the 2006-07 season when they also earned bronze.

championships,College wide news,fennell campus,Mohawk College,Mountaineers,OCAA,Student,Volleyball

Pathways Coordinator Linda Basso says this year's fair will be the biggest yet and include newcomers such as the Ontario College of Art and Design and Loyalist College.

College and university attendance at the annual fair has grown steadily in recent years due to increasing demand from students for programs that build on their Mohawk credential, says Basso. The province is also pushing public institutions to develop more degree completion opportunities as part of a province-wide credit transfer initiative, now in its third year.

"We're seeing more and more of Ontario's public post-secondary schools wanting to attract Mohawk students," says Basso. "And more and more students are coming to Mohawk with the expectation that their program will help them earn a degree or certificate faster."

The latest student entrance survey showed that nearly 45 per cent of students intend to continue on to university after graduation, she added.

Students who attend the fair will get to speak directly to representatives from the attending institutions. The reps will be able to provide information on program options, degree completion pathways, admission criteria, application procedures, deadlines and fees, and study abroad opportunities. There will also be people on hand to show students how to search the ONTransfer website, and representatives from Student & Graduate Employment services at Mohawk will also be there to answer questions.

Students will be asked to swipe their ONE Card for a chance to win an iPad or one of 4, $50 ONE Card credits. Using your ONE Card also lets the College know which programs are most interested in pathway opportunities. The College will use that data to better serve students at next year's fair.

The 9th Annual Educational Pathways Fair runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the C Wing Upper Level Atrium and H Wing link.
