• Access to preferred lots on the east side of the campus will continue from West 5th.


• Delivery vehicles must also enter the campus from West 5^th.


• Special Access will be provided for service, emergency and waste management vehicles.


• Access to general parking lots on west side of the campus will be from Fennell Avenue and will be guided by temporary signage.

The entrance was closed to allow the City to complete the roadwork in front of the college before classes start next week.

HSR buses will also resume normal on-campus service at noon today. 

A new $600,000 Digital Print and Learning Centre for students is the latest addition in the ongoing renewal of Mohawk College’s Fennell Campus.

The Digital Print and Learning Centre serves as a living lab for more than 160 students in Mohawk’s two-year Graphic Design Production programs. Students train at the centre on specialized technology, including digital printing presses, packaging design and finishing equipment. Students work on class and college projects ranging from business cards, saddle stitched and perfect bound books, pads, posters, banners to clothing, golf balls, mugs and other specialty printed products and packaging design products.

“Practical, hands-on learning is one of the hallmarks of a Mohawk College education,” says Media and Entertainment Associate Dean Ken Wallis.  “With our new Digital Print and Learning Centre, our students are directly involved from start to finish on both the creative and production ends of real world projects.”

The Digital Print and Learning Centre is supported by industry partners, including Xerox Canada, Duplo, Bell Howell, Steve Thistle, Oldman Robinson and Esko Graphics. The Corrugated Packaging Foundation of Canada also donated more than $175,000 in new equipment to advance studies in packaging design at the centre.

Industry partners will be recognized during the official opening of Mohawk’s Digital Print and Learning Centre on Friday, Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. in room F131 at the Fennell Campus.

“Thanks to the generous and ongoing support of our partners, Mohawk students are training on the same leading edge equipment and technology that they will use as future ready graduates working in the industry,” says Program Coordinator Philip Richardson.

Graduates from Mohawk’s Graphic Design Production programs work in graphic design, packaging design, prepress, print and finishing. 

As part of the ongoing Fennell Campus Renewal Project, staff offices were converted into the 2,250 square foot Digital Print and Learning Centre for students. Mohawk relocated its Graphic Design Production programs in the Fall of 2011 to the Fennell Campus from the Elgin Street Campus in Brantford. Applications soared for Mohawk’s full enrolment Graphic Design Production Creative Studio, Digital Media and Integrated Animation diploma programs following the relocation.

The Fennell Campus Renewal Project is earning high marks from students.The project has so far included a new library and student services centre, more common areas for students, renovations to classrooms, hallways and the cafeteria. In the province’s latest Key Performance Indicator Survey, students ranked Mohawk first among all colleges in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area for quality of learning and programs, services and facilities and overall student and graduate satisfaction. 

The Bert Hares Boardroom officially opens at Mohawk’s Fennell Campus Thursday afternoon.  The boardroom is named for the late Bertram George Hares. During his 45-year career in the insurance industry, Hares worked for Dominion of Canada General Insurance and served as President and CEO of North Waterloo Farmers Mutual.

Mohawk’s Insurance program received more than $600,000 in memorial donations and contributions from college supporters, including Dan Lawrie, President and CEO of Dan Lawrie Insurance Brokers Ltd., Cowan Insurance Group and Acumen Insurance Group.

The donations were invested in the construction of the Bert Hares Boardroom, renovations to classrooms and common areas and technology upgrades. In addition to the Bert Hares Boardroom, the McKeil School of Business will also be home to the Insurance Founders Lounge, Insurance Resource Centre and classrooms named in recognition of Dan Lawrie and Cowan Insurance Group.

The Bert Hares Boardroom will serve as a classroom for Insurance students to make presentations, host industry events and meet with prospective employers. Creating a state-of-the-art executive boardroom for students reflects Mohawk’s commitment to offer unique learning environments that mirror the workplace, says Piero Cherubini, Acting Dean of the McKeil School of Business.

“Our students will gain invaluable boardroom experience before they graduate thanks to the generosity of our insurance industry partners,” says Cherubini. “As future-ready Mohawk graduates, they’ll step into corporate boardrooms with an added measure of confidence.”

Nearly 200 students are enrolled annually in Mohawk’s two-year Insurance diploma program. The program has a 92 per cent graduate employment rate and 87 per cent of employers report being satisfied or very satisfied with the Mohawk graduates they have hired.

“It is a privilege for me to personally give back to Mohawk College,” says Lawrie. “Mohawk continues to make a tremendous contribution by preparing highly skilled young people for rewarding careers in the insurance industry.”

“Cowan is pleased to contribute to Mohawk College’s McKeil School of Business,” says Rick Purdy, CEO of Frank Cowan Company. “We fully support the school and the positive impact they have introducing students to, and connecting them with, the insurance community.

“I have been a strong supporter of Mohawk and the college’s Insurance program since the early 1980s,” says Sal Bagazzoli, President of Acumen Insurance Group Inc. “More than 30 per cent of our staff are Mohawk graduates. Hamilton’s community college continues to serves our industry by consistently producing high quality graduates.”

The Bert Hares Boardroom and other renovations in the McKeil School of  Business are part of the largest renewal project in Mohawk’s history. The Fennell Campus Renewal Project aims to further enhance the quality of education and overall college experience for the more than 9,000 full-time students attending Mohawk’s largest and oldest campus.

The Fennell Renewal Project is earning high marks from students. In the Ontario government’s latest key performance indicator survey, Mohawk ranked first among all colleges in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area for quality of facilities and services, as well as programs and learning and overall student and graduate satisfaction.

Mohawk was acknowledged as the first brochure in the field to utilize QR codes. The article, with the title, “Mobiles: The New Frontier” cites visual examples of our catalogue designed pages where QR codes are used to direct readers to our Learning Exchange and Fennell Renewal websites.

LERN's previous issue congratulated Mohawk for the Continuing Education cover presentation and was awarded “Best Brochure Design”.

LERN Magazine is the leading periodical on continuing education and LERN is the largest association for continuing education in the world, with more than 1,100 members.

Also this weekend, there will be a shutdown of the electrical system at the Fennell Campus from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 16th. Please keep this in mind if you're planning to visit the campus on Saturday. 

Renovation work will begin on parts of F Wing this week and continue to the end of August. The purpose of the renovation work is to better accommodate the Graphics Program that is moving to Hamilton from the Brantford (Elgin) Campus this Fall. When students return this September they will be greeted with expanded classrooms/labs, new windows to allow more natural light, more open spaces to work or relax between classes, and significant improvements to the corridors in F Wing.

Most of the work in F Wing will focus on the southwest corner of the building from West entry door 37 to East entry door 34, and south from door 34 to the entrance to the Music wing. During the renovations only those individuals with offices in the area will be permitted entry to the section of F Wing to the south of Tim Horton’s and the MCACES Lounge. In addition, the washrooms nearest West entry door 37 will remain open for people with offices or classes in M and F Wings and summer camp students using the portables located between M and F Wings.

For the duration of the work anyone entering the campus from the vicinity of parking lots P10 and P12 is requested to use West entry door 39, located to the north of door 37.

Work crews will also be making improvements to the section of the F Wing corridor from the entrance closest to the Parking/Security Offices to the area just south of the Tim Horton’s location across from the MCACES Lounge. While this work is not expected to result in any major disruptions there may be times when access is limited due to painting. Every effort will be made to communicate any disruptions well in advance.

In anticipation of the renovation work and to avoid service disruptions during the construction period the following offices and services have been relocated:

• The Faculty of Human Services has temporarily moved to E104 and will be permanently relocating to the second floor of A Wing.


• The Continuing Education Registration Centre will move to C066 on Monday, June 20.

The renovations to F Wing are part of our ongoing Fennell Campus Renewal Project., the largest in Mohawk’s history. To date, Mohawk has opened the new Harold Cummings Library and Collaboratory in the Learning Exchange and renovated the cafeteria, C-Wing, A-Wing, and Music department, and is currently building a new Student Services Centre where the old library used to be.

Staring Friday afternoon, crews will install a tarp over the newly laid ceramic tile floor along the north-south corridor (Main Street) between the lobby and the upper level atrium and the east-west corridor between the President's Office and Main Street. The tarp will remain until all the painting is complete.  The doors leading into the corridor will also be tarped. 

The corridor will be closed to all traffic starting at 6 p.m. Friday,  and remain closed until 6 a.m. Sunday, May 15. There are a couple of exceptions: 

• The exit doors from the McIntyre Theatre will be available for emergency use only and will have signs on the inside indicating they can be used in emergencies only. 


• Access to the Data Room will be maintained for IT personnel throughout the weekend.

Access to A Wing will be available from the lower level (cafeteria) of C Wing during the specified timeframe. The lower level can be accessed from the stair case in the front lobby and from stairs in the upper level atrium in C Wing.
