Mohawk becomes first college in Canada to offer Financial Services students a fast-track to a Professional Financial Planner (PFP®) designation

Mohawk College and the Canadian Securities Institute (CSI) have signed an agreement that will see students in the College’s two-year Financial Services program earn their Personal Financial Planner (PFP) Designation much faster than their peers at other colleges.

Mohawk is the first and only college in Canada to have an agreement with CSI. The partnership between Mohawk College and CSI begins in 2016, but the offer to earn the PFP extends to include students who have been in the diploma program since September 2014.

The agreement will exempt Financial Services students from some of the requirements for obtaining the PFP designation. CSI based the exemption on the program of studies for the Financial Services program. Students must still write the Applied Financial Planning (AFP) Certification exam in order to receive the PFP. Before writing the exam, the students will be required to submit college transcript as proof of program completion. They will also need to complete an exemption application and pay a fee of prior to writing the exam. The students will also be granted a Certificate in Financial Services Advice (CFSA) from CSI.

Financial Services students raise $22,000 for Food4Kids

Christine DiCarlo`s second year Financial Services students raised more than $22,000 for Hamilton-based charity Food4Kids.

Mohawk College’s Financial Services students have raised more than $22,000 for Food4kids, a local charity committed to making sure that children aged 5-14 don’t hungry the weekends when they can`t access in-school food programs.

``The money means so much to Food4Kids,`` says Lena Bassford, Executive Director of Food4Kids. ``It will give us an opportunity to expand services to include more children in the program, so they don`t have to worry about where their next meal will come from.``

Lena estimates that there are between 1,200 – 2,000 children who go hungry every weekend in Hamilton. The $22,000 is enough to feed up to 60 of those children, she adds. It will also be used to support Food4Kidz Summer Food program, which supports 400 children through the summer months.

Food4Kids accepts food and cash donations. The food is delivered to participating schools every Friday. The unmarked packages are quietly tucked into the students’ bags and knapsacks before they leave for the weekend. Each package contains enough healthy, nutritious food for an entire weekend.

This is the second year in a row that Christine’s Financial Services students have raised funds for Food4Kids. In previous years, the class focused its efforts on getting people to donate to Canadian Blood Services and raised funds for the Rotary Club. The annual challenge helps students hone their sales skills, which they will need to approach prospective clients if they want to succeed in the Financial Services sector. It’s also chance for the students to impress potential employers.

Topping this year’s list of students who raised the most funds was Financial Services student and MSA President Elect Luke Baylis who raised more than $5,400. Luke was followed by Justin Drinkwater who raised $3,690, Aaron Neal who raised $2,640, Carlee McQueen who raised $2,410, and Katy Davoli who raised $1,000.

Mohawk College's Financial Services students have raised more than $21,300 for Food4kids, a local charity committed to making sure that children aged 5-14 don't hungry the weekends.

The $21,000 will be enough to feed 50 children every week for one school year, says Food4Kids Executive Director Lena Bassford. So successful was the fundraiser, she adds, that Food4Kids is using the money to launch a weekend food program at another school in Hamilton and will name that program in Mohawk's honour. The official launch will happen later this year.

"Without these donations these kids would have nothing. They would go hungry the entire weekend," says Lena.

For many parents the program not only helps feed their children but also helps ease the financial burden, she says. Many work two or more jobs to make ends meet. This program means they can spend a little more time at home with their kids.

In the news: Mohawk prof out for blood

633, that's how many lives were saved by Mohawk's second-year Financial Services students who helped Canadian Blood Services recruit blood donors for this year's blood drive.

Denise Saulnier is a Community Development Coordinator with Canadian Blood Services. "The students' contribution is huge. They were able to fill spots we could never fill and in many cases we exceeded our targets because of them."

During a visit to the class on Thursday, Denise thanked the students for their hard work. The class of 37 students brought in 211 donations, surpassing the previous year's class of 40 students who brought in 139 donations. All of the blood donated during this year's campaign was used within five days.

This is the third year that Mohawk College Professor Christine DiCarlo's

students have participated in the blood drive. The annual blood drive helps students hone their sales skills, which they will need to approach prospective clients if they want to succeed in the Financial Services sector.

Brittany Virr was this year's top performing student, with 36 of her prospects showing up for their scheduled appointments. With some fund raising experience behind her, Brittany is no stranger to asking people for support, but getting people to donate blood was much harder than getting them to open their wallets, she said.

The experience gave her a good idea of what she will face when she leaves Mohawk to pursue a career as a Financial Planner, a profession that relies heavily on a person's ability to sell themselves.

"It (the blood drive) was a really good way to relate what we're learning in class to the real world," said Brittany. A blood donor herself, Brittany said the experience also reinforced how it important it is to donate.

The experience was also a chance for the students to impress potential employers.

Investors Group was so impressed with the students' success that on Tuesday the company hired a bus to pick them at Mohawk and take them to the company's head office in Toronto. There, the students were treated to lunch, given a tour of the office and heard from motivational speaker Anthony Morris. The top three students were presented trophies, and for her hard work Brittany received $100 gift certificate and gold tickets to a Tiger Cats' game.
