Several years ago, she was working as an adult educator and preparing to start a family. But when she was pregnant with her first child, she got laid off. After her maternity leave, she and her husband crunched the numbers and realized that the jobs she was looking at didn’t pay enough to cover the cost of child care.

She now has two kids, ages three and five, and is eager to return to the workforce. So when she read that City School by Mohawk College was partnering with Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) for a month long Introduction to Health and Wellness course, the decision was a no-brainer. “When the opportunity came along, and it was free,” says Skarrat, “I jumped.”

Later today, Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) will announce that I have accepted a new position as President and CEO of HHS effective February 1, 2014. With a cluster of eight health care facilities, this is an exciting opportunity for me to lead another large and essential community agency in Hamilton.

The decision to leave Mohawk College was not an easy one. I have had a wonderful time here and it has been such a pleasure working with so many talented and dedicated staff, faculty, and administrators.

I am very happy with the progress we have made over the past five years. Dramatically increased student satisfaction, the transformation of the Fennell campus, and the important steps taken into the future of learning in our community are all milestones on that journey. All of this was principally due to your extraordinary efforts in support of me.

At its meeting on November 13th, the Board of Governors will consider a process to select a new President. I trust you will provide the same loyalty and support for Mohawk’s next president that you have provided me.

In closing, I want to assure you that I will always consider myself a champion for Mohawk College and the College system generally. The work of the College is so important you have my enduring respect and gratitude for doing it so well.
MacIsaac will complete his term as President of Mohawk College on Jan. 31, 2014.

“Having spent the past five years working with remarkable students, faculty and staff, the decision to leave Mohawk College was extremely difficult,” says MacIsaac. “However, this is an exciting opportunity to be part of another organization that plays a pivotal role in building an even stronger community throughout the region.”

“It’s with mixed emotions that Rob is leaving Mohawk and joining Hamilton Health Sciences,” says Board Chair Nancy Fram. “We want to congratulate Rob on his appointment to one of Canada’s most comprehensive health care systems and acknowledge his contributions to the number one college in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. While our college is losing Rob, we are gaining another great champion at one of Mohawk’s long-standing partners.”

Mohawk’s Board of Governors will consider a process for recruiting the college’s next president at their November meeting.

During his tenure at Mohawk, MacIsaac led the largest renewal project in the college’s history. To date, $80 million has been invested in major construction and renovations at the Fennell Campus. Along with record student enrolment, Mohawk also become the top ranked college in the GTHA, finishing first in overall student satisfaction for the past three consecutive years.

Mohawk College educates and serves more than 16,000 full-time and apprenticeship students and is recognized as a leader in health, technology and skilled trades.
