In the news: $1.6M for Mohawk City School will help students learn for free

The Hamlton Spectator has this story about yesterday's announcement by Ontario's Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Development, Deb Matthews to invest $1.6 million in Mohawk's City School project. The money will be used to add more City School locations and help launch a mobile version of City School in 2017.

Graduates from the program will receive a Specialist High Skills Major Red Seal from the Ontario Ministry of Education on their high school diplomas and their high school transcripts will include their high skills major designation and a summary of their high skills major certifications and courses

Leif worked with Will at a Toronto studio in the late 1990s. "Everyone knew who Will Davies was," Leif tells the Spectator. "You would speak of him reverentially. If you were a young professional you aspired to be Will Davies. He was the most prominent advertising illustrator in Canada."

The Government of Canada announced a $2.3 million investment earlier this week in Mohawk's Additive Manufacturing Resource Centre. The Natural Sciences and Engineering Resource Council (NSERC) grant is the third that Mohawk has received and to date the Government of Canada has invested $11.5 million to support applied research projects with industry partners.

Hamilton nonprofits, community groups and associations are invited to apply to the 7th annual media relations summer camp at the Hamilton Spectator June 24 and 26. The camp is offered free of charge as a thank you to Hamilton community builders. Campers will work with local PR practitioners to polish, practice and then pitch story ideas to a panel of editors and reporters. Campers will also get crash courses on how to give on-camera interviews, spread the word using social media and write op-eds and letters to the editor. The camp is limited to up to 25 organizations, with May 23 as the deadline to apply.

HAMILTON ( April 8, 2013) -- The only athlete to win multiple medals in both Summer and Winter Games returns to the city and the hill where she began her road to Olympic glory.

Six-time Canadian Olympic medallist Clara Hughes brings her Strive for Success message to Mohawk College Friday, April 26. Mohawk Talks with Clara Hughes will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the McIntyre Performing Arts Centre at the college’s Fennell Campus (doors open at 9:30 a.m. for general admission seating). Presented in partnership with McKeil Marine Ltd. and The Hamilton Spectator, tickets for the community event are $10 and available online and at the door.

On Saturday, April 27, Hughes returns to Sydenham Road in Dundas for Clara’s Climb. A dedication ceremony and plaque unveiling will take place at the summit of the hill where Hughes trained from 1991 to 1997 for the Olympics. A cycling honour guard from CHCH National Cycling Centre Hamilton will escort Hughes through Dundas and up Sydenham Road to the lookout for the 11 a.m. ceremony.

Hughes is a six-time Olympic medalist in cycling and speed skating, winning a gold, silver and four bronze medals. In 2012, CBC named Hughes one of Canada’s most influential figures in sports and one of the country’s greatest citizens. Hughes is the national spokesperson for Bell Canada’s Mental Health initiative and the ‘Let’s Talk’ campaign. By sharing past struggles with depression, Hughes has helped break down the stigma associated with mental illness.

Mohawk College hosts a celebration tomorrow (3 p.m. in iWing at the Fennell Campus) to mark the reinstallation of Educational Experiment by the late George Wallace. The steel sculpture, which features an administrator, caretaker, scholar and academic supporting a student who is spreading her wings, was first installed outdoors at Mohawk in 1969. Corrosion forced the dismantling of the sculpture for safety reasons. The Wallace Conservation Committee led efforts to restore the sculpture as a collection of archeological fragements. Educational Experiment, together with a second George Wallace sculpture, are now on display indoors in a learning commons for students.

For the 5th consecutive year, Mohawk College's Fennell Campus was the halfway point and Saturday night stop-over for more than 5,000 cyclists.
