From Friendly to Welcoming: Insights from Mohawk's 2015 InterAct Summit

In October 2015, Mohawk hosted the InterAct Summit, welcoming close to 300 attendees, delegates and speakers to its Fennell campus. Over the two-day event, strategies promoting growth through immigration were examined, challenged and advanced.

The proceedings from the summit have now been published. You can view the proceedings here or download them here. The document summarizes the key findings and ideas that were discussed at the summit. You are welcome to use it as a guide as you develop plans for your own business or organization.

Building a welcoming community for newcomers focus of summit hosted by Mohawk College (media release)

HAMILTON (Sept. 29, 2015) – Mohawk College is bringing together more than 30 thought leaders to share best practices in building a more welcoming community for newcomers.

The InterAct Summit, being held Oct. 29-30 at Mohawk’s Fennell campus, will also feature keynotes by John Wright, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Ipsos Public Opinion, social activist Craig Kielburger and award-winning author Lawrence Hill. The summit, presented by RBC and sponsored by the City of Hamilton, Hamilton Economic Development and guard.me - International Insurance, will focus on three key areas of interest to employers, postsecondary institutions and community leaders:

Promoting global citizenship within schools and workplaces

Increasing job opportunities and supporting entrepreneurship among newcomers

Shifting a community’s focus from being friendly to actively welcoming newcomers

Immigration is expected to account for all the future growth of Hamilton’s population and workforce.

Mohawk College annually educates and serves more than 1,200 international students from over 70 countries.

The InterAct Summit is part of a year-long Welcoming Communities initiative launched in early 2015 by Mohawk, together with private, public and nonprofit sector partners.

Mohawk will release an action plan in early 2016 outlining strategies for welcoming international students, connecting them with the community and encouraging them to live and work in Hamilton once they graduate.

Mohawk College educates and serves 30,000 full-time, part-time and apprenticeship students at three campuses in Hamilton. For the fifth consecutive year Mohawk has ranked number one for student satisfaction among all colleges in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.
