Get your purple on! This Friday is International Women's Day @MohawkCollege

Get out your best purple sweater, shirt, T-shirt, or whatever else you may have and wear it this Friday to help celebrate International Women's Day at Mohawk College.

Events and activities will run throughout the day at the Fennell Campus. See below for a complete listing of IWD events:

Wall of Inspiration put on by Mohawk photography and pre-media students. Everyone is invited to come to the wall between C123 and C124 in the C Wing Upper Level Atrium between 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Write the name of a woman who inspires you on a piece of paper and then have your photo taken holding the sign. Photos will be printed within the hour and hung on the wall. The wall will be left up until the Tuesday after IWD and the students can come and take their photo with them.

LIVE Broadcast: Television and music department band “Bump City” will be broadcasting live from the Scotiabank Cafe (area south of Starbucks). The Live broadcast will run from 10 a.m. to 11: 30 a.m. and then be put up on the monitor’s beginning at 12:30 p.m. to run for the rest of the day. Segments will air on Cable 14 the following week.

Radio: live broadcast from college location-INDI and Ignite Radio. Women who Rock survey(taken last year on IWD) …results to be played on INDI 101. There will also be shows dedicated to IWD throughout the week leading up to the event.

Penny Drive: Bring your pennies and donate them to a Women's Shelter. Happening now in G Wing and again on Friday at the radio station.

Buy a Rose: Roses will be available for sale at all four campuses. At Fennell look for the location near the campus store near The SQUARE. All proceeds go to buy SHOPPER’S Drug Mart Cards to give to women living in Shelters.

Kate Campbell from "Holmes on Homes" and other HGTV favourites will speak with technology students in the morning and then appear at the Arnie from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. for a Q&A.

Take a Stand: Take a shoe (provided), dip it in ink, stamp it on a piece of paper, sign it, stick it to the wall and then follow the high-heel prints to "The Shoe Project" display (see below).

'The Shoe Project" Started by Canadian novelist Katherine Govier for the Bata Shoe Museum, "The Shoe Project" allows women to tell their stories through the shoes they were wearing at specific times in their lives. Eight of the shoes will be on display at the Fennell Campus this Friday, and Katherine Govier along with three of the women who wore the shoes, will be visiting Mohawk on Friday. The four women will be interviewed in the C Wing Atrium at 10:45 a.m.

Alumni Panel Breakfast: From 7:30 to 9 a.m. in the C066. Meet four outstanding Mohawk Alumni, hear their stories and ask questions. All four women are from the Health Science and Technology fields. A free continental breakfast will be provide but you must register.

Spin to Win at the Aborginal Education & Student Services office (A114): Spin the wheel. Answer the question about aboriginal life and culture right and win a prize.

Book and writers: Interviews with writers who contributed to the book "In the Wings”, stories about women in history will be shown on the campus TV monitors. The book will also be sold in the C Wing atrium.

Slide show of by and about women” edited by Elisabeth McKellar. Will loop throughout the day on campus TV monitors.

HGTV's Kate Campbell from Holmes on Homes & Deck Wars to visit Mohawk Friday

Kate Campbell star of HGTV's "Decked Out" and "Deck Wars" will be at Mohawk for International Women's Day this Friday.

Kate Campbell, from HGTV's "Holmes on Homes" will visit Mohawk College as part of this year's International Women's Day celebrations this Friday, March 8.

Kate will speak with technology students in the morning before visiting The Arnie from (TIME UPDATED) 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. for an afternoon Q&A session.

Born and raised in Georgetown, Ontario, Kate has spent the last seven years working in the television and renovation industry. She's been on popular shows such as HGTV's "Holmes On Homes", "Holmes in New Orleans", "Handyman Superstar Challenge" and "Holmes Inspection". More recently she's been featured as one of the crew on HGTV's hit shows, "Decked Out" and "Deck Wars", where she helps build some of the most interesting and unique decks out there.

Kate also owns her own contracting company, which she founded in 2006, and when she’s not filming with Decked Out, she loves to take on her own projects. She’s passionate about “changing the face” of skilled trades and very passionate about being an advocate for women in the trades.

Distribution of purple ribbons to students and staff.

IWD poster displays using original artwork created by Mohawk College Graphics students.

Fennell:

Live TV show in North Atrium (C Wing) 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. - broadcast live throughout Fennell and in 30 minute segments on Cable 14 over the following two weeks.

Fennell Campus TV Screens to display art by women artists throughout the day.

Rose sale in C104 in support of Martha House Women's Shelter.

Poetry reading with Linda Frank, inspirational quilt made by students and staff, draws and prizes and a book display in the Fennell Campus Library.

Celebrations planned for 100th anniversary of International Women's Day

Samille Elliston (left) and Brian Kountourogiannis were two of 10 students from Mohawk's Graphic Design Creative/Studio program whose posters were chosen to commemorate the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day at Mohawk College on Tuesday, March 8, 2011. Professor Leif Peng had the students do the posters as part of a class assignment. The posters are part of the college-wide activities planned for tomorrow to celebrate the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day. The students' posters will be on display throughout the Fennell campus on Tuesday.

The College will host a number of activities related to International Women's Day including the following:

Fennell:

Community workshop aimed at encouraging women to pursue careers in engineering and technology in i131.

Performances by three female vocalists Fennell Campus in the Collaboratory, cafeteria and out the McIntyre Theatre throughout the day.

Women from History at Fennell Campus: Actors dressed as historically significant women will be in the C Wing Atrium and cafeteria from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

IAHS:

Former Mohawk nursing student Marcella Veenman-Mulder will be at the Mohawk-McMaster Institute for Applied Health Sciences from noon to 1 p.m. to talk about her humanitarian work in Honduras.

STARRT:

Seminar on women in the trades for 30 female high school students from noon to 1 p.m.

In addition to the on-campus activities listed above several staff and students from Mohawk's School of Continuing Education will be at Martha House (a home for women and children who are victims of abuse), giving makeovers, serving lunch and offering resume advice.

Mohawk College’s first-ever Solar Panel Installer Certificate program was an innovative 8-week course that provided 26 aboriginal students with the skills needed to start a career in the green energy sector. The program ran from the beginning of January to the end of February.
