Awards of Excellence and President's Awards 2011: Nominations are now being accepted to recognize exceptional colleagues who make Mohawk an even better place to learn and work. All individuals and teams who've gone above and beyond in advancing one or more of Mohawk's Strategic Priority Actions of quality, innovation and sustainability can be nominated. Individuals can be recognized for everything from an exceptional contribution during their first year at Mohawk to a lifetime of exemplary service.

*New for 2011: Twelve Awards of Excellence will be presented. The 12 award recipients will then be the finalists for the annual President's Award. Award recipients will also be considered as Mohawk nominees for future Colleges Ontario and Association of Canadian Community Colleges award competitions.

Congratulations Salman Arif! Salman is a Level 3 Medical Radiation Sciences student at Mohawk College that has been honoured with membership in the prestigious Golden Key Society. Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2011: The first Innovation Night of 2011 takes place from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at McMaster University's new Ron Joyce Centre in Burlington. Participants must pre-register to pitch their ideas. Innovation Night provides access to the region's thought leaders in start-up strategy, providing invaluable input and support on those critical first steps in transitioning an idea into a business.

Saturday, Nov. 13: Santa Claus Parade in downtown Hamilton starting at 2 p.m. Come and watch the parade and cheer on the Mohawk float.  The parade route starts at Queen and Main Streets, heads east on Main to John Street, north on John to King Street, and then west on King to Bay Street. The Mohawk Float is being sponsored by WC Bowen Transport, and is designed by Mohawk College advertising students. The float will also feature a live band from Mohawk’s Applied Music Program.

Saturday, Nov. 6: Steeltown Friends of Mohawk Music and students in the Mohawk Music Club present Soundscapes gala concert at 8 p.m. in the McIntyre Theatre at the Fennell Campus. The 11th annual concert raises money for scholarships, instruments and master classes. Also on the bill for Soundscapes are Bob Hamper’s Mohawk College Jazz Choir, plus jazz vocalist Heather Bambrick, backed by guitarist Kim Ratcliffe, trumpeter Mike Malone, trombonist Dave McMurdo, reedmen Terry Basom and Darcy Hepner, bassist Pat Collins and drummer Ted Warren. Monday, Oct. 18: Hydro One Day at Mohawk College. Hydro One President and CEO Laura Formusa will take part in the official opening of the Hydro One Lab at Mohawk (11 a.m. in room E328 at the Fennell Campus) and a Q&A Town Hall session with Engineering Technology students at 1:15 p.m. in room i109. Mohawk is one of the founding partners in the Hydro One College Consortium, a groundbreaking and award-winning partnership.

Tuesday, Oct. 19: Alternate President’s Breakfast for staff who were unable to attend the Sept. 1 Breakfast.

Wednesday, Oct. 20: Institute for Canadian Citizenship Swearing-in Ceremony in the McIntyre Theatre at noon. All students and staff are invited to welcome and congratulate Canada’s newest citizens and their families (Mohawk, which hosts two ceremonies a year, was the first college in Ontario to be an official ICC Chapter).

Wednesday, Oct. 6: Volunteer Fair in the MCACES Lounge (F114), Fennell Campus from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with 21 nonprofit organizations with opportunities for students and staff who want to make a difference in the community.

Thursday, Oct. 7: Hundreds of Mohawk College Police Studies, Law and Security and Police Foundation students will take part in Operation Acrobat, a mass casualty rescue and recovery training exercise at Brantford Airport for City of Brantford and County of Brant Emergency Management and Community Responders. Along with observing the exercise, students will play the part of victims of a plane crash. A mock morgue day will be held on Friday, Oct. 8 to practice dental identification, with the Ontario Society of Forensic Odontology & Wayne County (Michigan) Dental Identification Team.

Wednesday, Sept. 15: 3rd annual MoStock free concert and barbecue 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Fennell Campus. Performances by ARKELLS, USS, Huron and Slow Monday featuring Mohawk President Rob MacIsaac. Presented by the MSA, Rogers and Wireless Wave.
