The Institute for Canadian Citizenship (ICC) and Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) will welcome and celebrate 40 new Canadians from 11 countries at a special community citizenship ceremony at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario on Wednesday, Oct. 16.

Prior to the ceremony, the ICC will hold another in its series of community-led roundtable discussions organized by its local volunteer committee. The roundtable is a unique experience where members of the community (from neighbours to business professionals and city leaders) are invited to guide a conversation with new citizens that encourages the sharing of stories and a collective reflection on Canadian citizenship. One new citizen, Ilyana, had this to say about the experience: “When I arrived this morning I was excited for me and my family. After the roundtable discussions, I became excited for everyone in the room.”

40 new Canadians during a ceremony at Mohawk College

On Wednesday, March 20, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) and the Institute for Canadian Citizenship (ICC) will host 40 new Canadians at a special community ceremony at Mohawk College in Hamilton.

Prior to the ceremony, the ICC will hold another in its series of community-led roundtable discussions. The roundtable is a unique experience with community leaders invited to guide a conversation with new citizens that encourages the sharing of stories and a collective reflection on citizenship and the significance of the day’s ceremony.

In 2008, Mohawk became the first college in Ontario and second in Canada to become a chapter of the ICC. Mohawk hosts Roundtable Discussions and Citizenship Ceremonies twice a year.

Mohawk College will host a Community Citizenship Ceremony with the Institute for Canadian Citizenship and Citizenship and Immigration Canada, on Wednesday, March 20. The ceremony will take place at noon in the McIntyre Performing Arts Centre. All are welcome to attend.

They came to Canada for opportunity and freedom and with the dream of creating a better life for their families. For 35 new Canadians the long journey from their former homeland to Canada came to an end today after taking the oath of citizenship at a swearing-in ceremony held in the McIntyre Theatre at the Fennell Campus.

The newly sworn-in Canucks hail from 17 countries including China, Ethiopia, Serbia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Turkey, Zimbabwe, India and Pakistan, to name a few.

Among them were Mohawk students, including Essraa Mahmod, a second-year Network Engineering student who came to Canada from Iraq four-and-a-half years ago.

“I found freedom here,” said Essraa. “I am so excited to be here in Canada, to start a new life here, to have freedom and human rights.”

Her wish is that Iraq will one day be like Canada, safe and secure and able to offer a future for families like hers.

Today’s swearing-in ceremony, held during national Citizenship Week, was the second to be hosted by Mohawk College in 2010. The college hosts two a year and was the first college in the province to become a chapter of the Institute of Canadian Citizenship. The Institute is a national, non-profit organization dedicated to engaging Canadians about citizenship. It was founded and is co-chaired by the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson (a former Governor General of Canada) and John Ralston Saul.
