The Mohawk Award of Excellence is the highest honour for recognizing individual employees at the college. Three Awards of Excellence are presented annually to an outstanding employee from the faculty, support and administrative employee groups. This year's awards were presented at the President's Kick-Off on September 3.

Award of Excellence - Faculty: Karen Davis

Karen Davis, Early Childhood Education Professor and Program Coordinator, is the 2026 Award of Excellence recipient in the Faculty category.

Karen has dedicated nearly 25 years to the Early Childhood Education program at Mohawk College.

She has demonstrated innovation and leadership through the development of initiatives such as the ECE Career Expo, providing students with valuable networking opportunities, career pathways, and direct engagement with employers in the field. Her leadership was especially evident during the pandemic when she guided faculty and students through the transition to online learning with flexibility and creativity. Her impact is further showcased through a recent collaboration with the International Department in developing a training program for educational partners in Egypt.

Karen's active participation on local committees and collaborative initiatives have strengthened connections between the college and the early childhood education sector, ensuring that the program remains responsive to community needs and workforce demands.

Her ability to build and sustain strong partnerships with community organizations, educators, and industry professionals is a key contributor to the sustained success of the ECE program. Her exceptional leadership and steadfast dedication to Mohawk College make her a deserving recipient of the Mohawk Award of Excellence.

Award of Excellence - Support Staff: Melissa Crowley

Melissa Crowley, Senior Accounts Receivable Specialist, is the 2026 Award of Excellence recipient in the Support Staff category.

Melissa has played a critical role in Mohawk College's Banner Business Transformation project, also known as the BBT. She consistently goes above and beyond to understand not only current-state processes, but also how Banner SaaS can be leveraged to improve operational efficiency in our future state. She thoroughly reviews requirements, asks thoughtful questions, and challenges assumptions to ensure Mohawk adopts best practices rather than simply replicating existing processes.

Melissa has become a trusted resource across multiple project streams, proactively collaborating with Finance, IT, Student Services, and project consultants to help develop effective solutions while keeping project deliverables on track.

These qualities are not limited to her work on the BBT project; they have been evident throughout her tenure in finance. Whether navigating unique funding arrangements or addressing unusual one-off situations, Melissa is always looking for opportunities to improve outcomes for all. Her dedication to Mohawk College makes her a deserving recipient of the Mohawk Award of Excellence.

Award of Excellence - Administrative Staff: Grant Hodson

Grant Hodson, Director, Corporate Reporting and Banner Business Transformation Project Lead, is the 2026 Award of Excellence recipient in the Administrative Staff category.

Grant was described by his nominators as showing exceptional leadership, in-depth understanding of the college’s operations, and an unwavering willingness to support those around him.

He has made extraordinary and lasting contributions to Mohawk College in two recent projects. In the Strategic Mandate Agreement 3 process Grant played a central role in defining and projecting the performance metrics on which the college is evaluated by the province. His strategic insight and data-informed approach ensured alignment with institutional priorities and helped secure a sustainable foundation under the province’s performance-based funding model.

He is also playing a pivotal role in the college’s Banner ERP implementation. Through Grant's leadership, he has driven forward system modernization, safeguarded data integrity, and laid the groundwork for more efficient service delivery and data-informed decision-making across the college.

Whether leading critical initiatives like SMA3 or Banner implementation, or offering guidance to colleagues across departments, Grant’s collaborative approach fosters a positive and supportive work environment for all. His exceptional leadership makes him a deserving recipient of the Mohawk Award of Excellence.

Earlier this month, beneath the bright lights of a Windsor, Ontario pageant stage, stood an accomplished entrepreneur, content creator, model, actor, and humanitarian. 

As Aslihan Morali was crowned Miss Universe Canada 2026, the Mohawk College Office Administration – Health 2018 graduate looked back on an incredible journey. One that had already taken her from arriving to Canada as a refugee at the age of 6 to the international stage. 

This moment was years in the making. 

Her journey included a Top 10 finish at Miss Universe Canada 2023, a second runner-up placement at Miss International Canada 2023, the title of Miss Supranational Canada 2025, and the Miss Congeniality award at Miss Supranational 2025. Each experience helped her grow as a competitor and leader. 

Behind those achievements were endless hours, late nights, sacrifices, and disciplined preparation, all balanced with the demands of everyday life. Through every setback, Aslihan continued to show up and believe in her purpose with a strong foundation behind her. 

“Education was one of the greatest turning points in my life,” she says. Growing up with limited resources, college provided her with an introduction to the professional world and opened doors she had never imagined. 

“Through my college program, I was fortunate to complete a co-op placement at McMaster Children’s Hospital and was later hired, which helped jump-start my career,” Aslihan explains. “Working in healthcare before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic profoundly shaped my perspective. It taught me about empathy, the fragility of life, and how meaningful even the smallest act of kindness can be.” 

A proud Turkish-Canadian advocate and community leader, Aslihan founded LEAP Global Voices, an empowerment initiative dedicated to helping young girls recognize their potential and rewrite their own stories. “Through LEAP, I share my own story with students and encourage them to understand that where they begin does not have to determine where they end,” she says. 

The young girl whose family packed their lives into two suitcases and came to Canada in search of possibilities has grown up to represent her new country. Aslihan demonstrates that a person’s beginning does not determine how far they can go.

When the crown was placed upon her head, she joined a legacy of extraordinary Canadian women. She accepted the honour with gratitude for the friends, family and team members who have carried the dream alongside her.

“Being Miss Universe Canada is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Only 75 women in the history of Canada have had the privilege and honour of holding this title, and I feel a tremendous responsibility to make this year meaningful,” said Aslihan. “What I’m most looking forward to is the outreach and the opportunity to connect with different communities, causes, and organizations across Canada and internationally.”

Although excited for the opportunity to travel and represent Canada, she says the success of this year will be measured not by the distances she travels or the number of events she attends, but instead by the people she’s able to connect with, the organizations she'll support, and the small positive impacts she will make every day.

Throughout her reign, Aslihan will continue her community work while preparing to represent Canada at the 75th Miss Universe competition in Puerto Rico this November.

For Aslihan, achieving this crown is not the conclusion of her story. It marks the beginning of a new chapter.

Through this agreement, CLAC and Mohawk College will collaborate on the development of classroom and lab space at CLAC’s location in Grimsby, a short distance from the college’s skilled trades campus in Stoney Creek. The added capacity the Grimsby location provides will help with the backlog of apprentices waiting for in-class training in high demand Red Seal Programs such as electrical, plumbing, welding and carpentry.

The collaboration aligns with the Government of Canada’s Team Canada Strong initiative, which aims to recruit, train and hire 80,000 to 100,000 new Red Seal skilled trades workers by 2030-31. It also aligns with the province’s long standing push to get more people into the skilled trades.

“This partnership demonstrates how colleges and labour organizations can work together to solve urgent workforce challenges,” said Paul Armstrong, President of Mohawk College. “By expanding access to high-quality, hands-on apprenticeship training, we are helping more people move into in-demand careers while supporting the skilled talent pipeline employers need to grow Ontario’s economy.”

Rooted in a shared commitment to workforce development, the partnership brings together Mohawk College’s strength in industry-led skilled trades education with CLAC’s direct connection to workers and workforce needs in the field. Mohawk and CLAC will work together to identify skills gaps in the trades and respond with targeted, industry-informed programming. They will also explore how they can support accelerated learning pathways and integrate emerging technologies into trades education based on worker experience and insight, from the field.

“Ontarians need the breadth, depth and expertise of our community colleges, to serve the vast number of prospective tradespeople who come from all corners of the province,” said Ian DeWaard, CLAC Provincial Director. “This partnership strengthens our ability to support the next generation of skilled trades professionals by ensuring people have accessible pathways into well-paying, in-demand careers.”

Beyond physical infrastructure, the agreement commits both organizations to exploring future partnerships in applied research, workforce development, and emerging areas such as green construction, sustainable building practices, and next-generation skilled trades training. The facility is currently in the preliminary design stage, with plans to start the approvals process latter this year, and a ground breaking in early 2027.

The CLAC and Mohawk College will sign a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at addressing urgent labour market needs through expanded skilled trades training capacity and accelerated apprenticeship pathways. The agreement includes collaboration on the development of dedicated classroom and lab space near CLAC’s location in Grimsby. The Parliamentary Assistant to the Ontario Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, Sheref Sabawy will attend and speak along with local area MPs, MPPs, Mayors and Councillors.

This past spring, recent Mohawk College Architectural Technology co-op graduate, Omar Ashkar received the Intern Excellence Award 2025 for the Greater Toronto Area at Pomerleau’s annual Excellence Celebration. Omar completed two co-op terms at Pomerleau and has since accepted a full-time position with the company.

Pomerleau is one of Canada’s largest construction companies, specializing in building, infrastructure, and civil engineering projects across the country. The organization is involved in major and complex projects such as hospitals, transit systems, wastewater treatment plants, and renewable energy facilities, often involving innovative and sustainable construction practices.

Each year, Pomerleau celebrates the contribution of its interns through the Excellence program. This initiative expresses appreciation for students who completed their internships and recognizes the outstanding performance of those who stood out by awarding them one of the 2025 Excellence scholarships.

Omar was one of eleven interns to receive the award out of 366 interns eligible. Pomerleau recognizes the talent, effort, and achievement of its top interns through a nomination and scholarship program. Each year, the management of each office nominates the most outstanding interns in each of the firm’s main divisions. The winners are chosen from across Canada and invited to the Excellence Celebration to be honoured and receive a $2,500 scholarship.

“Receiving the Toronto Intern Excellence Award means a lot to me. My time at Mohawk and my co-op with Pomerleau helped shape my confidence, skills, and passion for the building industry. I’m grateful for the support and opportunities that made this achievement possible,” says Omar, now working as a Project Coordinator at Pomerleau Construction.

Omar’s achievement sets an inspiring example of what dedication and passion can achieve. This recognition is more than just an award; it reflects the value of hands-on learning and the impact students can make when given the opportunity.

This notice relates to a recent event that could affect the confidentiality of certain current/former students and staffs’ personal information, due to a third-party incident affecting MyCanvas accounts.

What Happened? On April 26, 2026, a malicious actor obtained unauthorized access to certain myCanvas accounts hosted on Instructure inc. (‘‘Instructure’’), including myCanvas accounts belonging to Mohawk College (‘‘Mohawk’’). This activity was subsequently identified as part of a ransomware incident impacting Instructure. On or around May 2, 2026, Instructure notified Mohawk of the Incident. Mohawk subsequently commenced its own internal response with the assistance of third party cybersecurity specialists.

On or around May 12, 2026, Instructure advised Mohawk that it reached an agreement with the unauthorized party, resulting in the return of the data, assurances it will not be shared, and evidence that copies have been deleted. At the time of this update, there is no evidence that the data has been posted online. That said, we are issuing this notice as a precautionary measure, so that students and staff may consider taking the appropriate preventive measures.

What Information Was Involved? Personal information that has been identified in the myCanvas accounts may include any combination of the following: name, email addresses, institutional/student identifications, user-generated content, including messages.

What We Are Doing. We take this event and the security of information in our care very seriously. Upon discovery of this event, we immediately began an exhaustive investigation to determine its nature and scope.  As part of our ongoing commitment to the confidentiality of the information, we are also working to put in place additional security measures to further protect against the risk of a similar event occurring in the future. We have also reported this event to the appropriate regulatory authorities, including the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (‘‘IPC’’).

Please note that you are entitled to make a complaint to the IPC. The complaint must be made in writing and filed with the IPC by no later than May 2027. The mailing address for the IPC is: 2 Bloor Street East, Suite 1400 Toronto, ON, M4W 1A8.

Instructure has advised it reached an agreement with the unauthorized party, resulting in the return of the data, assurances it will not be shared, and evidence that copies have been deleted. At the time of this update, there is no evidence that the data has been posted online. This provides additional reassurance; however, situations involving unauthorized third parties carry inherent uncertainty, and the Mohawk community should continue to remain vigilant.

Mohawk College’s MyCanvas learning system is unavailable until further notice.

Students who have concerns about assignments, assessments, or course-related deadlines are encouraged to contact their program coordinator directly for support and guidance. Faculty and staff are aware of the outage and will adjust their teaching plans accordingly. No assignments are due during the outage. 

This outage affects the MyCanvas learning system only. No other college systems are affected. The college continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as more information becomes available.

Important IT Notice: Third‑Party Incident Affecting MyCanvas

Mohawk College is aware of a global cybersecurity incident involving Instructure, the provider of the MyCanvas learning system.

At this time, there is no required action for students or employees. Passwords and login credentials were not affected, and there is no indication that financial or highly sensitive personal information was involved.

Users are encouraged to remain vigilant for phishing emails and report any suspicious messages.

The college continues to monitor the situation and will share updates if needed.

This designation recognizes organizations that demonstrate a commitment to understanding the employee experience through structured, research-backed employee listening practices. By deploying an employee engagement pulse survey delivered by McLean & Company this past winter, Mohawk College has taken a meaningful step toward gathering actionable feedback and strengthening its people strategy.  

Furthermore, the feedback obtained through employee focus groups held in June combined with the results of the employee engagement survey will help to inform the new employee engagement strategy that will launch this fall.

The contest is open to current secondary, post-secondary, and graduate students studying graphic design, creative advertising, photography, illustration, digital, motion or gaming programs from the US, Canada and Europe. Any work created at any time during a student’s academic creative program is eligible.  

“The industry exposure is fantastic,” says Professor Rafael Ferreira.  

And what it means to the students to win an award of this calibre can be summed up by the excitement of one of the winners. "I screamed so loud in the car when I got the email that I scared my mom," says Kambria Johnson.

This spring, graduates were recognized at ceremonies throughout June with W.K. Warrender Awards, Governor’s General Awards, Outstanding Achievement Awards, and Graduate Medals.  

W.K. Warrender Award 

The Mohawk College Judge W.K Warrender Award went to three graduates Aydann Mueller (Aviation Technician - Avionics Maintenance), Sahil Jain (Computer Systems Technician -Software Support), and Mubeen Ali (Pharmacy Technician).

The W.K Warrender Award recognizes the distinguished contribution of recipients to student life throughout their time at the college. 

Aydann Mueller was a consistent and engaged presence in student life initiatives. She volunteered at open houses, represented the Aviation program in promotional videos, participated in CHCH news interviews, and took part in an Airport Emergency Exercise—always contributing her time willingly and with genuine enthusiasm. Her leadership also extended into competition, where she earned a gold medal at the Skills Ontario competition and went on to represent both Mohawk College and Ontario at the national level. In recognition of her achievement, a gold medal banner bearing her name now hangs in the rafters of the Hamilton Airport campus hangar, standing as a lasting inspiration for future students.  

From the start of Sahil Jain’s academic journey, he demonstrated a strong commitment to excellence, maintaining an average above 90%, earning multiple Dean’s List recognitions. Beyond academics, he contributed over 527 volunteer hours, strengthening the campus community through his roles as Student Ambassador, Wellness Ambassador, and Peer Tutor.  As a Director-at-Large with the Mohawk Students’ Association, he represented the student voice and supported meaningful campus initiatives.  He also gained valuable industry experience as an IT Support Technician intern at Mohawk’s Mississauga campus in partnership with triOS College, successfully applying his academic knowledge in a professional setting. Throughout his journey, he demonstrated that leadership is measured not only by personal achievement but also by service to others.  

Mubeen Ali has consistently demonstrated leadership, dedication, and a strong commitment to student success. Balancing multiple jobs throughout his studies, he remained actively involved in campus life, volunteering in class and across the college while supporting his peers and contributing positively to the Allied Health community. From his first week at Mohawk, he served as a representative of his program on the Associate Dean’s Allied Health focus group, helping to improve student resources and learning supports. He worked as a Student Services Assistant with the Mohawk Students’ Association and regularly volunteered at open houses and provided guided campus tours. He also co-led the Pharmacy Technician Student Club, organizing social events, study sessions, and Pharmacy Awareness Month activities. Outside of school, this student volunteered within his local mosque and community, mentoring youth and encouraging them to explore different career opportunities through post-secondary education.

The Mohawk College Outstanding Achievement Awards are presented to graduating students with a minimum 75% GPA in addition to proven community involvement and extracurricular achievements, as nominated by their faculty.

Governor General's Award  

The Mohawk College 2026 Governor General's Award went to Xin Zou of the Aviation Technician – Avionics Maintenance program. 

The Governor General’s Academic Medal, established in 1873, is one of the most prestigious awards that can be received by a student in a Canadian educational institution for exceptional academic achievement.  

The Collegiate Bronze Medal is awarded annually at the Spring Convocation to the student who achieves the highest overall average upon graduation from a diploma-level full-time post-secondary program that must be at least two years in duration. The recipient is selected from the graduating classes spanning an academic year.  

Xin Zou was also the recipient of the Mohawk College Graduate Medal, which is awarded annually at the Spring Convocation to one full-time student per faculty who achieves the highest-grade point average, with no failures.

The Mohawk College Graduate Medals are awarded to one student per faculty who achieve academic distinction while maintaining honours standing, with no failures.  

The medals are presented annually at the Spring Convocation to a full-time graduating student with the highest-grade point average from each faculty, as determined by the Registrar. The criteria for this award stipulates that it is issued on academic marks only.

When Insurance student Madison Filax-Orr stepped into the Senate of Canada Building in Ottawa this spring, she joined 109 post-secondary students from across the country for Model Senate 2026 — a three-day immersive experience designed to simulate the work of Canada’s Upper Chamber. Participants debated legislation, examined policy issues in committee, and even responded to a surprise emergency debate, all while learning firsthand how parliamentary democracy works.   

Launched in 2020 and hosted by the Senate Administration, the event is a unique model parliament in Canada that attracts hundreds of applicants from across the country.  

For Madison, the opportunity was a natural extension of her passion for civic engagement and advocacy.  

“I chose to participate in the Model Senate because it offered a powerful platform to translate insights from my student leadership journey into advocacy for both my peers and post-secondary students,” she said.  

Madison first learned about Model Senate through the Mohawk Students’ Association (MSA) last year. Encouraged by mentors who recognized her commitment to student leadership, she applied and was accepted. After a rewarding first experience, she returned for a second year and has since used her own social media platforms to encourage other students to apply.  

Throughout the event, participants debated a fictional bill, engaged in committee studies, and networked with senators, Senate staff, and fellow student leaders from across Canada.   

As part of her senator’s statement, Madison advocated for stronger collaboration between government officials, educators, and students.  

“I urged government officials to work collaboratively with educators and students, emphasizing consistent consultation with those most directly impacted by policy decisions,” she said. “Ultimately, influencing even a single leader to consider these vital perspectives would make the entire experience incredibly worthwhile.”  

Serving as President of the Mohawk Students’ Association since April 2026, Madison says the lessons she learned in Ottawa will directly shape her leadership approach.  

“The most valuable lesson I will bring from the Model Senate into my role as MSA President is the power of meaningful collaboration and active consultation,” she said. “Participating in direct dialogue with students, educators, and policymakers reinforced that the most impactful leadership happens when we actively listen to our constituents and co-create solutions.”  

She hopes to continue fostering open communication with Mohawk College students, ensuring their voices are reflected in decisions that affect their academic experience, well-being, and future opportunities.  

For Madison, Model Senate demonstrated how meaningful change begins when people come together, listen to one another, and advocate for the communities they serve.

Mohawk’s Distinguished Fellows make invaluable contributions to the college through academic advisement and student engagement, community outreach and strategic advisement to Mohawk’s senior leadership team.  Participation in Mohawk College’s Distinguished Fellow program is by invitation only, with the title conferred and service to the college recognized during convocation ceremonies.

Dr. Azim S. Gangji
Distinguished Fellow - Adjunct Professor

Dr. Azim S. Gangji is a nephrologist, transplant physician, clinician educator and health-system leader whose work has strengthened the connection between healthcare and education in Hamilton and beyond. As Vice-President, Academic at St. Joseph’s Health System, Vice-President, Education at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, and a Professor of Medicine at McMaster University, Dr. Gangji has played a key role in advancing collaborative models of learning, including the Mohawk–St. Joseph’s Living Classroom partnership, which creates meaningful opportunities for Mohawk College students to learn in real-world healthcare environments.

Dr. Gangji’s leadership spans nephrology, transplantation, simulation, interprofessional education and health-system collaboration. He is Co-Chair of the Ontario Hospital Association Education Committee and has chaired national committees through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada focused on residency and fellowship programs, accreditation and CanMEDS leadership. Internationally, he has helped strengthen dialysis services, cardiovascular and kidney disease prevention, clinical training, research and healthcare workforce capacity in Guyana and other global health settings. Through his commitment to innovation, mentorship and patient care, Dr. Gangji has made a lasting impact on learners, institutions and communities locally and around the world.

The Distinguished Fellow - Adjunct Professor for Dr. Azim S. Gangji will be conferred by virtue of hooding at the Convocation Ceremony held on Monday, June 15 at 2 pm.

Rob MacIsaac
Distinguished Fellow

Rob MacIsaac is a visionary public servant, lawyer and community leader whose career has shaped municipal government, transportation, healthcare and postsecondary education across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. As a former President of Mohawk College, MacIsaac helped advance the college’s role as a community-building institution and championed the importance of education in preparing the next generation of leaders. He also served as Mayor of Burlington, founding Chair of Metrolinx, and most recently as President and CEO of Hamilton Health Sciences, where he led a $1.6-billion health system through the COVID-19 pandemic.

A graduate of the University of Waterloo and Western University’s Faculty of Law, MacIsaac holds an ICD.D. designation from the Rotman School of Business and an Honorary Doctorate from Charles Sturt University. He has chaired Ontario’s Greenbelt Task Force, served on numerous boards across the public and private sectors, and been recognized with the King Charles III Coronation Medal, a Paul Harris Fellowship Award and the CUI Urban Leadership Award, among other honours. Throughout his career, MacIsaac has been guided by a deep commitment to building stronger communities and supporting emerging leaders across the region.

The Distinguished Fellow for Rob MacIsaac will be conferred by virtue of hooding at the Convocation Ceremony held on Tuesday, June 16 at 9:30 am.

Dan Lawrie
Distinguished Fellow

Dan Lawrie is the Founder and Chairman of Lawrie Insurance Group, one of Canada’s largest independently owned insurance brokerages, headquartered in Hamilton, Ontario. A respected business and community leader, Lawrie has built a nationally recognized company rooted in independence, integrity and a client-first approach. His longstanding commitment to Hamilton and the surrounding region has also made him a valued supporter of Mohawk College and its role in strengthening the communities it serves.

Beyond business, Lawrie is widely recognized for his contributions to the arts, culture and community development across Southern Ontario. He has supported major civic and cultural institutions, including the Art Gallery of Burlington and the Royal Botanical Gardens, and helped create public art initiatives such as the Dan Lawrie International Sculpture Collection in Hendrie Park and the Burlington Waterfront Sculpture Trail. His contributions have earned him numerous honours, including Hamilton Citizen of the Year, induction into the Burlington Entrepreneur Hall of Fame and the Key to the City of Burlington.

The Distinguished Fellow for Dan Lawrie will be conferred by virtue of hooding at the Convocation Ceremony held on Wednesday, June 17 at 2 pm.

Glenn T. Gibson
Distinguished Fellow

Glenn T. Gibson is a distinguished international insurance executive, educator and community leader whose career spans more than five decades. A former Global Chief Strategy Officer with Crawford & Company, he has led complex catastrophe and major loss initiatives around the world and is widely recognized for his expertise in appraisal, arbitration and fire investigation. His deep commitment to professional education, applied learning and community leadership aligns closely with Mohawk College’s role in preparing skilled graduates and strengthening the Hamilton region.

Gibson has delivered more than 500 lectures globally and authored more than 250 published articles, several of which have been cited by the Ontario Superior Court. For more than 30 years, he has contributed to specialized training programs in partnership with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. His academic and professional credentials include executive education at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Fellow Chartered Loss Adjuster, Certified Fire & Explosive Investigator, Certified Fraud Examiner and Institute Certified Director designations. A dedicated civic leader, he serves as Chair of the Hamilton Sports Group Foundation and has previously held leadership roles with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. His contributions have been recognized with the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal and the King Charles III Coronation Medal.

The Distinguished Fellow for Glenn T. Gibson will be conferred by virtue of hooding at the Convocation Ceremony held on Wednesday, June 17 at 7 pm.

Lillian Wherry
Distinguished Fellow - Honorary Diploma (Posthumous)

Lillian Wherry was born in Hamilton on Nov 1, 1920 and died Feb 1, 2025 at 104 years old. She grew up during the Great Depression which prevented her from pursuing a post-secondary education. She attended a technical school then worked in a bakery. At the age of 22, she married Robert Wherry. They both knew what it was like during hard times and were always ready to help others when they saw a need. They were devout Christians and active volunteers in many organizations their entire lives. 

Robert was a welder, and he was proud of his welding skills and the important projects he had worked on. After he died in 2009, Lillian created a scholarship at Mohawk aimed at supporting students learning the welding trade. She also supported the new welding lab at the Marshall School for Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship. In 2017, Lillian was presented the Senior Citizen of the Year award by the mayor of Hamilton in recognition of her lifelong commitment to volunteering and supporting others in the community. 

The Distinguished Fellow - Honorary Diploma for Lillian Wherry will be conferred posthumously at the Convocation Ceremony held on Friday, June 19 at 2 pm.

For two inspiring days in May, leaders from across sectors gathered at Mohawk College for the Spring 2026 PIVOT Conference. Attendees were united by a shared goal to accelerate climate action through collaboration, innovation, and community engagement. 

Hosted by Mohawk College’s School of Climate Action, the conference began with immersive field-trip experiences that exposed participants to tangible examples of local climate action. Attendees explored industrial transformation along Hamilton’s waterfront with Hamilton Oshawa Port Authority and Ontario Shipyards and learned of Indigenous-led conservation and knowledge at Kayanase, an ecological restoration and native plant and seed business located on Six Nations. These experiences provided firsthand insight into the opportunities and complexities of building a sustainable future. 

The conference was opened by renowned environmentalist and scientist, Dr. David Suzuki. His message was clear; we need to act, and we need to act now. The urgency for collective action and the responsibility shared by all sectors of society is essential to address climate action. 

Building on the importance of local and collective action, the conference featured a compelling Local to Global Impacts panel discussion which explored climate action through a broader cross sectoral lens. Moderated by CHCH Morning Live co-host and Mohawk College Alumni of Distinction, Annette Hamm, panelists included Mohawk College President Paul Armstrong, Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward, Eric Jury of Ontario Power Generation, and Peter Jones of IKEA Canada. Their conversation focused on how their institutions and organizations were navigating sustainability challenges, while also identifying opportunities for innovation, resilience, and leadership. 

Day one wrapped up with the Climate Innovators Gala, hosted by the Hamiton Chamber of Commerce. This event, aligned with the PIVOT Conference, hosted the Honourable Bob Rae as a keynote speaker and fireside conversation with Mohawk College’s President, Paul Armstrong. The conversation explored international leadership, opportunities for industry, local momentum, and cross-sectoral collaboration. 

Day two shifted the focus toward action, exploring sector-specific opportunities across three distinct streams; education and community, finance and policy, and industry and infrastructure. Through dynamic panel discussions and focused climate conversations, participants heard from diverse perspectives and engaged in honest discussions. The day also included networking opportunities and lightning talks on approaches to workforce development, smart infrastructure and community-driven climate solutions.

The event concluded with a closing keynote from Anthony Morgan, host of CBC’s The Nature of Things, and researcher focused on reducing polarization and improving high-stakes conversations. His remarks challenged attendees to consider how climate action and social justice are deeply interconnected, leaving participants with a powerful reminder that meaningful and lasting change requires both courage and collective responsibility.

Congratulations to Mohawk College Indigenous Counsellor, Elizabeth (Beth) Gray, who was recently honoured with the 2026 Ontario College Counsellors (OCC) Outstanding Contribution and Leadership Award! 

The award recognizes outstanding contribution in leadership, advocacy, collegiality, dedication, quality excellence, originality and relevance. This year's award was announced at the OCC Annual Conference held virtually on May 25. 

Beth has worked at Mohawk College for over 10 years, with the past nine years focused on counselling. She previously spent a decade running a small publishing company as administrator and managing editor, where books on Social Work Practice and Community Organizing were published. 

A community leader, Beth is guided by an unwavering dedication to students. She actively seeks opportunities to learn, build meaningful connections and advocate for services that respond to the evolving realities faced by students. 

Over the past few years, she has developed a strong working relationship with the Hamilton Police Service, which has helped raise awareness around student safety when encountering police and student understanding of grooming and sex trafficking. By working alongside police and advocacy organizations, Beth has championed initiatives that strengthen community supports and student safety. 

Her advocacy has also led to transformative change beyond campus. A new ground-breaking housing project in Hamilton, Sacajawea Non-Profit Housing’s Indigenous Learners Apartments, is currently beginning construction and will provide affordable, culturally safe housing for 31 Indigenous post-secondary students. The project was inspired by Beth’s experience supporting an Indigenous student facing homelessness on a dangerously cold winter day. Determined to find a long-term solution to a systemic issue increasingly affecting Indigenous learners, Beth tirelessly championed the idea of culturally relevant, affordable housing, engaging community partners and leaders to help make the vision a reality. In the face of a national housing crisis that disproportionately impacts Indigenous youth, Beth’s persistence will create lasting change. 

Outside of her work at the college, she mentors mental health professionals training in land-based focusing-oriented therapy, an approach that incorporates Indigenous wisdom into trauma recovery. This commitment reflects both her collegiality and her dedication to providing culturally responsive, high-quality care to students. 

Beth’s passion for learning and commitment to student growth are evident in both large-scale initiatives and everyday acts of support. She regularly seeks opportunities to celebrate student achievements, ensuring students are nominated for special awards and recognized for their accomplishments. She continually adapts her approach to meet changing student needs, always prioritizing student well-being and success. 

“It is a huge privilege to walk alongside our students through their educational journey. I get so inspired by their growth and courage. They make me excited for the future that will be in their hands,” says Beth. “I am proud to work with them and support them however I can as they move toward their vision for their future. I am deeply grateful for their trust. Our students are amazing.” 

Beth’s leadership in counselling and community advocacy continues to make a profound impact, demonstrating that when she dreams big, those dreams often become reality. 

The agreement reflects a shared commitment to creating learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom and connect students to a broader global community. As institutions respond to an increasingly interconnected world, this partnership will support the development of innovative, cross-disciplinary opportunities that prepare students for global success.

Through this MOU, both institutions will explore joint initiatives including student exchanges, faculty collaboration, applied research, and athletic engagement opportunities, offering students a more holistic and global educational experience.

Kenora, ON – Skilled Trades Ontario (STO) is improving access to certification for apprentices in Northwestern Ontario by opening the Agency’s first examination centre in Kenora. CEO Candice White joined the Honourable David Piccini, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, and Minister Rickford to mark the announcement at Seven Generations Education Institute in Kenora.

The Kenora centre is the latest addition to a province-wide network of 24 partnerships between colleges and institutions across Ontario, giving apprentices the ability to write their certifying exams closer to where they live, work, and learn.

“Apprentices across Ontario have told us what a five-hour drive to an exam centre meant for their certification – in time, in cost, and in delays,” shares CEO Candice White. “For too long, that has been the reality. Bringing certifying exams to apprentices exactly where they are changes that. This is what the apprenticeship pathway should look like – meeting apprentices where they are, with the consistency and integrity they deserve. We’re grateful for our industry partners and to the STO team who made this possible.”

“The opening of the examination centres reflects STO’s continued commitment to improving client service and expanding equitable access to certification across the province,” said Board Chair Michael Sherrard. “This milestone strengthens Ontario’s skilled trades system, supports the growth of a highly qualified workforce, and reflects ongoing efforts to expand regional access and improve service for apprentices, sponsors and employers across Ontario.”

These examination centres will make Ontario’s certification system for apprentices more accessible, responsive and equitable by bringing essential services closer to communities. This work is helping strengthen the skilled trades workforce that will build Ontario’s future.

Mohawk College has been recognized with the Large Employer Award at the Burlington Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards Gala, held on May 13.

Presented annually by the Burlington Chamber of Commerce, the Business Excellence Awards celebrate organizations and leaders making significant contributions to Burlington’s economy and community. This year’s gala recognized 73 finalists across eight award categories, highlighting the strength and diversity of the city’s business community.

The Large Employer Award recognizes Mohawk College’s ongoing commitment to workforce development and community partnership in the Burlington region.

Hamilton, ON (May 13, 2026) Mohawk College Advertising students are celebrating and taking home a few medals from the Young Ones competition in New York earlier this week, widely considered the most prestigious student advertising competition in the world.  

Students earned 32 shortlisted entries and 10 finalist placements, the strongest results in the program’s history. Those results translated into two bronze medals and eight awards of merit, as well as placing first among Canadian institutions and 12th in the world for The Young Ones One Show contest. Overall, the college ranked 28th for combined competition scores.    

 “Competition was fierce with over 3200 total entries. Taking home two bronze medals and placing first among Canadian teams is a notable achievement for our students,” said Jef Petrossi, Professor, Advertising. “They are competing against the top advertising schools in the world, and to see this level of success speaks to their creativity, dedication and talent.”  

Among the highlights of this year’s awards was that one Mohawk team was a finalist in the competition’s live Pitch Competition. The team travelled to New York to present their campaign in front of leading global industry professionals, showcasing their ideas on an international stage.  

Hosted annually by The One Club for Creativity, the Young Ones competition attracts entries from top institutions around the world and is regarded as a launching pad for the next generation of creative leaders.

Mohawk’s results reflect both the continued strength of its Advertising program and of Hamilton as a hub for creative talent. 

The Mohawk Mountaineers Department of Athletics and Recreation was recognized for its storytelling, event execution and promotional excellence after capturing three of seven Ontario Colleges Athletic Association marketing awards for the 2025-26 season.

Mohawk earned Championship of the Year for its hosting of the 2026 OCAA Women's Basketball Championship, Feature Video of the Year for its 2027 CCAA Men's Basketball National Championship bid video, and Promo Video of the Year for its men's basketball national championship hype video.

The Championship of the Year honour reflected a department-wide effort led by tournament committee members Matthew Ferreira, Ashley Mamone, Satbir Singh, Brittany Galan, Chris McColl, Tayo Smith and Brayden Swire, along with support from many additional staff and volunteers.

The championship also featured live-stream production support from students and staff in Mohawk's Broadcasting – Television and Communications Media program, helping deliver a high-quality experience for fans, teams and partners throughout the event.

Mohawk's award-winning feature video was directed by Singh and produced by Smith, with narration provided by Joe Raso. The video played a key role in the Mountaineers' successful bid to host the 2027 CCAA Men's Basketball National Championship.

Smith also produced Mohawk's Promo Video of the Year, which helped build excitement ahead of the Mountaineers men's basketball team competing at the 2026 CCAA Men's Basketball National Championship in Nanaimo, B.C.

The 2025-26 season marked the first year the OCAA presented seven marketing awards, with Mohawk leading all institutions with three award wins.

Mohawk College skilled trades and technology students excelled in the Skills Ontario 2026 post-secondary competition earlier this week, collecting 12 medals.  

The Skills Ontario Competition offers a unique opportunity for top students from colleges across the province to demonstrate their mastery of their skills in their field. Some of the top individuals and team will go on to compete at the national Skills Canada competition, which will be hosted in Toronto, May 28 & 29.  

This year, the Mohawk College team included 58 competitors in 27 different area of competition. Thirteen competitors took home a total of 12 medals, including one team and ten individual medals.   

The college was also recognized with the Gene Haas Foundation Manufacturing Award at the closing ceremonies. This award, including $5000 designated for student scholarships in the manufacturing programs, recognizes the post-secondary institution that shows the greatest dedication to promoting the manufacturing sector.   

Mohawk College emerged as the top-ranking institution in overall competition scores in manufacturing, demonstrating the college’s commitment to providing exceptional education and support to our students.

On Thursday, April 23, two Mohawk College employees, Abby Taylor and Mariano Arriaga received Leadership Excellence Awards from Colleges & Institutes Canada, the national association for publicly supported colleges, institutes, CEGEPs, and polytechnics, at their annual conference.   

Mohawk College IDEAWORKS’s Centre for Emerging Research Initiatives led by Andrea Johnson, received a Program Excellence Award as well.   

“Congratulations to Abby, Mariano and the Centre for Emerging Research Initiatives team led by Andrea, on this well-deserved national recognition. Their work reflects the commitment to excellence, collaboration and a student-focused mindset that defines Mohawk College. These awards highlight the impact our faculty and staff have on students and the communities we serve,” said Mohawk College President, Paul Armstrong.

Abby Taylor – Silver Recipient, Leadership Excellence Award for Non-Managerial Staff 

In her role as a Student Success Advisor for more than six years, Abby Taylor advised thousands of students in more than 50 programs across Business, Creative Industries, General Studies, and Engineering Technology, to achieve their goals through personalized guidance.  

Known for transforming complex challenges into streamlined solutions, Abby overhauled transfer processes, created tools to track academic progress, and personally ensured pathways for students during program suspensions. A mentor and trusted resource to colleagues, she uplifts teams through collaboration and knowledge-sharing.  

Mariano Arriaga – Bronze Recipient, Leadership Excellence Award for Managerial Staff  

Since 2018, Dr. Mariano Arriaga, General Manager, Energy & Power Innovation Centre (EPIC) has transformed EPIC into a leading hub for applied energy research and innovation. Under his visionary leadership, EPIC has secured over $8 million in funding, completed more than 100 projects, and partnered with over 70 organizations, including Ontario Power Generation, Independent First Nations Alliance, and Black & McDonald.  

His collaborations with industry, government, and Indigenous communities have advanced clean technologies, reduced emissions, and created numerous student learning and employment opportunities.  

Centre for Emerging Research Initiatives (CERI) Program – Silver Recipient, Program Excellence  

The Centre for Emerging Research Initiatives (CERI) at Mohawk College led by Andrea Johnson, General Manager, was established in 2022 to build applied research capacity for faculty and anticipate emerging areas of opportunity in applied research through a structured five-stage pathway.   

Created by CERI, the Applied Research 101 (AR 101) is Canada’s largest virtual training program for Applied Research. CERI equips faculty to lead research projects, fosters cross-disciplinary and inclusive collaboration, and expands student opportunities. The AR 101 framework is transferable across institutions, and its sustainable, on-demand model is now used nationally and internationally, supporting innovation and research excellence across the college sector.  

Mohawk College recently hosted leaders from Arizona State University’s (ASU) School of Sustainability—Joshua Abbott, Professor and Director, School of Sustainability and Rob Melnick, Presidential Professor of Practice & Director, International Programs, School of Sustainability—for a visit focused on strengthening collaboration and expanding sustainability‑focused academic pathways for students.

The visit advanced a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) partnership between the two institutions, grounded in shared commitments to applied learning, climate action, and workforce‑aligned sustainability education. Discussions centred on creating clear credential pathways, joint academic opportunities, and meaningful experiential learning between students in Ontario and Arizona.

A key area of focus was the alignment between Mohawk College's Bachelor of Management – Sustainability and Bachelor of Technology – Sustainability programs and ASU’s Master of Sustainability offerings, available online and in person. As part of the partnership, ASU will review Mohawk coursework to consider pathways for Mohawk graduates interested in pursuing graduate studies within ASU’s School of Sustainability.

Faculty and student collaboration is another key component of the relationship. Both institutions are exploring opportunities for academic exchange and curricular collaboration, including jointly developed online undergraduate courses, micro‑credentials, and integrated online learning experiences.

“Addressing climate challenges requires collaboration across institutions and borders,” said David Santi, Interim Dean of the School of Climate Action. “This partnership allows Mohawk College and Arizona State University to combine strengths, create meaningful learning experiences, and prepare students to lead in a rapidly changing world.”

The visit also included meetings with Mohawk faculty and tours of applied learning environments, including IDEAWORKS, highlighting the college’s growing leadership in climate action and sustainability education.

Together, Mohawk College and Arizona State University are beginning a collaborative international partnership focused on expanding learning opportunities, supporting student mobility, and advancing practical sustainability solutions.

In April 2026, Mohawk College was announced as one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for the 13th consecutive year.  

Mohawk is the only Ontario college to make the list this year.

“Being named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers once again reflects Mohawk College’s long‑standing commitment to climate action and sustainability,” said Paul Armstrong, President of Mohawk College. “This recognition highlights the leadership of our faculty and staff who are embedding sustainability in applied research and academic programming across our campuses.”  

Last year, Mohawk College officially launched its School for Climate Action.   

In March 2025, the college was recognized by Students Organising for Sustainability UK as the first institution in North America to receive the Responsible Futures accreditation for the college's commitment to embedding sustainability into every aspect of student learning.   

Through a partnership with the Mohawk Students’ Association, the program actively engages students, staff, faculty, and leadership to drive sustainable change from within. The accreditation underscores the college’s dedication to creating positive, lasting change in academic practices, policies, and campus culture, focusing on social and environmental responsibility.

Canada's Greenest Employers have developed exceptional sustainability initiatives – and are attracting people to their organizations because of their environmental leadership. Prior to 2009, this award was called "Canada's Most Earth-Friendly Employers". This year’s winners were announced on April 21, 2026.  

Here are some of the reasons why Mohawk College was selected as one of Canada's Greenest Employers (2026):  

• With assistance from students in the environmental technician program, Mohawk College has undertaken a tree inventory project collecting detailed data on all of the trees across campus -- in addition to providing information necessary to protect and maintain a healthy ecosystem on campus, the project provides students and staff with the data required to inform future tree selection and support biodiversity
• Mohawk College maintains a 50-plot community garden with over 300 members (and 100 employees) participating annually as well as a fruit orchard -- and as part of the harvest, the college operates a campus farm stand from July to November while also making annual food donations to local community organizations
• Mohawk College has introduced a range of environmental programs across campus, including community gardens, honeybee apiaries, pollinator gardens, water bottle filling stations (in support of a disposable water bottle ban) and more 

Now in its 19th year, Canada’s Greenest Employers is an editorial competition that recognizes employers that foster a culture of environmental awareness and leadership. Employers are chosen by editors of Canada's Top 100 Employers using four main criteria: (1) the uniqueness and effectiveness of their environmental initiatives; (2) whether they have been successful in reducing their own environmental footprint; (3) whether their employees are involved in these programs and contribute unique skills; and (4) whether their environmental initiatives have become linked to the employer’s public identity, attracting new employees or customers.

Over the past decade, that has shifted dramatically. 

In classrooms and educational lab spaces, however, paper and laminated charts are still common. Mohawk College’s Centre for Healthcare Simulation and Research is working to change that.  

At the centre of this shift is the LUCKY eMAR created by Mohawk College Simulation Specialist Sachith “Lucky” Pathirana. 

An eMAR (electronic medication administration record) is a digital charting system used to document medications, patient assessments and other healthcare information. 

“I would say pre-pandemic, a lot of the healthcare systems were still using paper-based charting. The pandemic really helped push the switch to electronic databases,” says Pathirana.  

That shift created a disconnect. Students trained on paper charting were entering clinical placements where everything was digital.  

Building a solution from experience  

Lucky Pathirana, who is also a licenced nurse, brought his expertise to the simulation lab space.  

"When I worked as a clinical instructor, I saw the gaps that my students faced at placement. They were encountering electronic systems, and they weren't as well prepared for that,” he says. 

Training students on eMARs, such as Epic and Oracle, has been challenging because educational licences don’t exist for these very expensive, robust systems.  

Built in-house on Microsoft Excel, the LUCKY eMAR system is designed to evolve alongside healthcare practices and curriculum. 

“The beauty of it is it’s easy to use, adaptable, and it can be expanded upon,” says nursing faculty member Jephinah Pandhoo. 

While called an electronic medication administration record, the LUCKY eMAR goes far beyond medications.  

“[The system] has orders and care plans so that the students would see it as if they were out in the various facilities,” adds nursing professor Joanna Peschke. The system is designed to mirror what students will encounter in real clinical environments. 

Learning safely through simulation 

In simulation, students use the LUCKY eMAR as part of interactive patient scenarios on high-fidelity mannequins. They assess patients, administer medications and document care, all within a controlled environment. 

That ability to learn through trial and error is critical in healthcare education.  

For students, the system within the simulation lab setting offers something that textbooks and paper charts alone cannot: hands-on preparation.  

“It helps you get started into what you’re going to have to do in clinical,” said practical nursing student Tia Wilson-Payne.  

She notes that hospital documentation can be overwhelming, especially without guidance. Although taught in the classroom and labs, documentation is an element of students’ medical training that most students must experience first-hand to fully grasp the concepts.  

The LUCKY eMAR provides that missing foundation.  

For internationally educated nurses, the tool is especially valuable.  

“It provides a training version,” says Pandhoo. “[It] helps [the students] to be a little bit more at ease and more comfortable in the transition into clinical practice.”  

The benefits extend beyond students. Faculty are also gaining insights that can be incorporated into their teaching to reflect modern healthcare systems.  

“It helps faculty understand what is out in the facilities and helps students navigate those systems once they go into the field,” says Peschke.  

As healthcare continues to evolve, so too must the way future professionals are trained. At Mohawk College, the LUCKY eMAR is helping ensure that students don’t just learn nursing skills, but that they practice it in a way that reflects the realities of modern healthcare, ensuring they are ready to enter the field with confidence.

Hamilton Sports Group announced today a new three-year partnership with Mohawk College, bringing together two long-standing Hamilton institutions to create meaningful opportunities for student learning, mentorship and community engagement. 

The partnership will connect Mohawk College students with both Forge FC and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, providing hands-on experience across professional sport operations while strengthening ties within the local community. 

“This partnership is rooted in a shared commitment to Hamilton and creating opportunities for the next generation,” said Kyle Lohnes, Vice-President, Partnerships & Retail, Hamilton Sports Group. “Working with Mohawk College allows us to give students real-world exposure to the sports industry while continuing to engage with our community in a meaningful way.” 

At the centre of the partnership is student development, with a focus on experiential learning and industry access. Mohawk College students will gain exposure to multiple areas of Hamilton Sports Group through mentorship opportunities, including gameday job shadowing and in-office experiences across the organization. 

That access is complemented by a speaker series featuring Hamilton Sports Group executives, offering students insight into the sports industry and potential career pathways. 

Students will also have the opportunity to engage directly with the club’s football operations. Forge FC will lead technical learning initiatives, including access to a first-team training session and a behind-the-scenes look at the professional environment. 

“We’re proud to partner with Hamilton Sports Group to give Mohawk College students access to professional sport environments right here in Hamilton,” said Paul Armstrong, President of Mohawk College. “It’s an exciting opportunity to learn, connect, and contribute, while strengthening the community we are proud to call home.”  

Community programming will play a key role in the partnership, with Mohawk College Summer Camps set to feature player or mascot appearances. Camp participants will also receive ticket vouchers to attend a Forge FC or Tiger-Cats home game. 

Additional initiatives, including on-field experiences at Hamilton Stadium and expanded community programming, will be introduced throughout the partnership. 

Together, Hamilton Sports Group and Mohawk College will support student success while continuing to strengthen their shared connection to the Hamilton community. 

Simol Mehta, a Mohawk College student in the Insurance program, has received the Experiential & Work-Integrated Learning Ontario (EWO) College Co-op Student of the Year Award. This is the 5th consecutive year that a Mohawk College student or students have been awarded for co-op and experiential learning. 

The EWO Co-op Student of the Year Award recognizes Ontario students who have showcased exceptional job achievement, extracurricular involvement, academic achievement, and have made a strong contribution to co-op education and work-integrated learning.  

For Simol, co-op was an important opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world experience.  

“As an international student with seven years of prior experience in the insurance brokerage sector, I wanted to better understand how the Canadian insurance industry operates, including workplace culture, regulatory practices and professional expectations,” said Simol. “Through my co-op, I was able to apply the concepts I learned in my courses while working with independent adjusters and clients.”  

Experiential learning in action  

During his year-long co-op with Sedgwick Canada Inc., Simol worked as an adjuster trainee supporting claims operations. His responsibilities included monitoring incoming claims, verifying information within client systems and preparing detailed claim setups for adjusters based on notices of loss.  

Simol quickly stood out among his peers for his attention to detail and initiative. One of his most significant achievements was leading a major automobile policy cancellation and premium refund project involving more than 600 policies. The work required reviewing cancellations, calculating refunds, tracking data and coordinating with multiple departments, including finance, IT and client representatives. 

Simol independently learned a new client-side platform and integrated it with the company’s internal system to complete the project within three months. The successful outcome strengthened the client relationship and generated additional work for the organization.  

He later coordinated a large-scale distribution of non-renewal notifications to approximately 3,000 insured clients, further demonstrating his ability to manage complex projects, maintaining detailed documentation and regulatory compliance. 

“Simol’s performance consistently exceeded expectations. Because of his strong capabilities, he was entrusted with responsibilities beyond his initial role,” said Alex Beric, assistant vice president of dispatch and hub at Sedgwick Canada Inc. “His work on revenue-based client projects directly supported operational efficiency and improved service delivery for key stakeholders. He brought professionalism, adaptability, and a consistently positive attitude to the workplace, all of which made him a valued member of our team.”  

Throughout his co-op, Simol processed between 40 and 50 claims per day, including complex transportation claims involving multiple stakeholders and coverage types. His accuracy helped adjusters focus on the technical aspects of the investigation.  

Giving back and planning for the future 

Outside the workplace, Simol has also been active in the college community and beyond. He has logged more than 89 volunteer hours supporting student events, job fairs, sustainability initiatives and community programs in Hamilton. 

His academic achievements include multiple scholarships and appearing on the Dean’s Honour List each semester. 

Following the success of his co-op, Simol’s employer has offered him a part-time role while he completes his final semester, with the option to transition into a full-time adjuster position after graduation. 

Looking ahead, Simol plans to continue building his career in insurance adjusting and pursue the Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation. 

“My goal is to specialize in property and casualty and marine insurance adjusting,” he said. “I want to help individuals and businesses recover from losses while supporting resilience within communities.” 

HAMILTON, ON – Mohawk College’s School of Climate Action is gearing up to host the Spring 2026 PIVOT Conference on May 27 & 28, bringing together innovators, educators, and community leaders for two days of climate‑focused dialogue and action. 

The upcoming conference marks Mohawk College’s first full‑scale PIVOT Conference since assuming leadership in 2025. Building on the success of the 2025 PIVOT Symposium, this spring’s gathering will introduce expanded programming, new partnerships, and a broader platform for student and community engagement. 

PIVOT is a multi-day gathering that brings together leaders from across education, industry, municipal government, Indigenous communities, and the finance and policy sectors to accelerate climate action through collaboration, innovation, and community engagement. 

What’s New for 2026? 

The Spring Conference will feature a significantly broadened program designed to deepen collaboration and accelerate climate innovation across sectors. Attendees can expect keynote presentations from local and national leaders, dynamic panel discussions, field experiences, and themed sessions exploring emerging technologies, community‑driven climate solutions, and the rapidly evolving green workforce.  

Building Momentum Across the PIVOT Network 

As the newest steward of PIVOT, Mohawk College aims to strengthen regional and national collaboration. The Spring Conference will serve as a platform for new partnerships, cross‑sector dialogue, and initiatives that continue long after the event concludes.

The buzz of discovery filled Mohawk College’s Stoney Creek Campus on February 19, as high school students from across the city stepped into workshops and lab spaces to learn new skills and discover their potential.   

This day of exploration was Mohawk College's 3rd annual Jill of All Trades.   

A day dedicated to inspiring young women aged 14 to 18 to explore education and careers in the skilled trades and apprenticeship pathways. Led by Mohawk College faculty members who were assisted by industry partners and mentors, workshops were designed to give participants a deeper understanding of the wide range of challenging, rewarding and high-demand careers available in the skilled trades, while helping them build confidence and see themselves reflected in the field.  

For many of the young women in attendance, it was their first time holding a welding torch, troubleshooting automotive components or exploring careers in millwright, construction and elevating devices. What they discovered was more than just technical skills; it was new possibilities.  

In the welding shop, one student described the experience as eye-opening. “I am learning how to properly weld pieces together,” she said. “It’s unique in a way [that] they have this simulation [machine] that tells you how to do welding properly and it gives you a score. My school doesn't have that…so that's pretty cool.” Each student taking part in the workshop went home with a flower they had welded themselves. 

Experiential learning is at the heart of Jill of All Trades, creating space for students to explore their interests in a supportive environment, surrounded by mentors, students, and graduates who once stood where they stand now. At Mohawk College, experiential learning is a defining part of the student experience, integrating hands-on simulations, applied learning projects and work-integrated learning opportunities that allow students to build practical skills and gain industry insight.  

That message of belonging was championed by keynote speaker Ashley Borzellino, a 2020 Mohawk College graduate of the Civil Engineering Technology program who works as a contract inspector operator with the City of Hamilton.   

“It is quite normal to be a female in this industry,” she said, speaking about the camaraderie she’s experienced in her career. “There’s nothing greater than being able to move forward knowing that you have people to support you.”  

As Miss North America 2025, Ashley also uses her platform to advocate for women in construction and STEM.   

That sense of support and advocacy was shared by current Mohawk College students Ava Sunderland and Aaliyah Young-Lalumiere. Now second-year students in the Construction Engineering Technician - Building Renovation program and Schulich Builders scholarship recipients, the pair attended Jill of All Trades as high school students in its first year at Mohawk. They returned to volunteer last year as first-year students and again this year as emcees.  

“It’s very surreal, like a full circle moment,” said Ava. “Last year we [volunteered at] it, but now actually getting to address the girls is really cool.”  

For Aaliyah, the event is about visibility and reassurance.  

“I think it’s just letting [the students] know that [the trades] is a pathway for them and it’s an option. A very feasible option that now has a lot more opportunity,” she said.  

Recent graduate Emma Norris also returned as a mentor. A 2025 graduate of the Manufacturing Engineering Technician - Automation (Industrial Mechanic Millwright) program, Emma now works in die cast maintenance at Orlick Industries. Volunteering at Jill of All Trades gives her the opportunity to share real-world advice with students who may not know where to begin.  

“I love being able to come back and help [the high school students] explore avenues that they didn’t know existed,” she said. “[I’m sharing] my experience and how I got into it.” 

For faculty members like Monika Gonthier, professor in the Auto Body & Collision Damage Repairer program, the event is about expanding awareness. Decades ago, before she began her career, she wasn’t aware of the range of opportunities within the trades. Today, she sees the impact of introducing students early to hands-on skills and showing them that complex systems are easily tackled when broken down step by step.  

Industry partners underscored the importance of the day. With the ongoing demand for skilled trades professionals, companies recognize the value young women bring to skilled trades with fresh perspectives in an expanding workforce. Through their sponsorship, partners bring a wealth of industry knowledge and expressed enthusiasm about partnering with Mohawk College to create a meaningful impact on young women eager to explore new career paths.

Hamilton, Ontario — February 18, 2026 — Hanwha Ocean and Ontario Shipyards have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to accelerate the return of large-scale shipbuilding in Ontario and to strengthen Canada’s ability to deliver future naval programs.

In parallel, Hanwha Ocean, Ontario Shipyards and Mohawk College have entered into a Letter of Intent (LOI) to establish an embedded shipbuilding training hub at Ontario Shipyards’ Hamilton facility, aligned with the sector’s long-term workforce requirements.

Together, the agreements establish a coordinated industrial and workforce development framework intended to position Ontario as a scalable centre of excellence for defence-related shipbuilding and advanced marine manufacturing in the Great Lakes region.

Memorandum of Understanding

Hanwha Ocean and Ontario Shipyards

Under the bilateral MOU, Hanwha Ocean will provide structured technical and operational support to Ontario Shipyards to strengthen production readiness and shipyard performance.

The cooperation will focus on:

• design and engineering
• production planning and construction sequencing
• quality management systems
• advanced shipyard processes and smart-yard best practices

These measures are intended to accelerate the re-establishment of large-scale vessel construction capability in Ontario, enhance production efficiency, and support long-term naval industrial readiness.

As part of this cooperation, Hanwha Ocean will provide support to the design and construction for a Training and Recruitment vessel that Ontario Shipyards will begin building in 2026, serving as a practical demonstration of next-generation shipbuilding capability in the province.

Subject to the award of the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP), Hanwha Ocean intends to pursue further strategic investment in Ontario, including the establishment of a dedicated shipbuilding training centre and expanded industrial cooperation with Ontario-based suppliers.

The Ontario government is making the following changes starting in Fall 2026:

A new long-term funding model will see universities, colleges and Indigenous Institutes focused on delivering programs that align with student and labour-market demand supported by increased, predictable funding. This new long-term funding model will bring an additional $6.4 billion into the sector over four years and raise annual operating funding to $7 billion, a 30 per cent increase and the highest level in the province’s history. It will also fund 70,000 more in-demand seats, while better meeting the needs of small, rural, northern, French-language and Indigenous Institutes.

An updated tuition framework will support the postsecondary sector’s long-term sustainability while maintaining one of the lowest rates of tuition increase in Canada. Ontario will allow publicly assisted colleges and universities to raise tuition by up to 2 per cent per year for three years, then up to 2 per cent or the three-year average rate of inflation, whichever is less, in the years following. This rate of increase will be among the lowest of any province in Canada, including comparable jurisdictions such as British Columbia and Manitoba.

On average, this change will result in an additional cost of $0.18/day for college students and $0.47/day for university students. Low-income students will have this cost absorbed through an enhanced Student Access Guarantee (SAG).

A stronger, more sustainable OSAP system will ensure financial assistance remains available for future generations while supporting students’ appropriate investment in their education and success. To strengthen the long-term sustainability of OSAP and bring it in line with other provinces, Ontario students will be eligible to receive a maximum of 25 per cent of their OSAP funding as grants and a minimum of 75 per cent of their funding as loans. OSAP will no longer offer grants to students at private career colleges, in alignment with changes made by the federal government to its own student support funding.

The annual awards, which are celebrating their 50^th anniversary this year, honour women and girls whose leadership and impact create lasting change in Hamilton and Halton.  

The winners will be announced on March 5 at the annual Women of Distinction Gala.  

There are six categories: Arts/Culture, Community Champion, Education/Training, Health/Wellness, Innovation in Business, Public Service, and STEM/Trades. As well as Lifetime Achievement Award, with nominees from each category, and a Young Trailblazer Award, which recognizes individuals under 25.

Debbie Logel Butler | Early Childhood Education, 1981 

Debbie is nominated in the Public Service category.  

Debbie has spent more than 40 years strengthening Hamilton's health and social-service sector. The Mohawk College 2012 Alumni of Distinction recipient began her career in child life before moving into fundraising, where she advanced some of the city's most respected non-profits by breaking barriers, expanding access, and securing vital resources.  

Her work has consistently improved services for women, girls, and gender-diverse people. Across every role, and through her extensive volunteer leadership, Debbie has championed dignity, equity, and ease of access for those facing serious life challenges. A compassionate, ethical, and visionary leader, she empowers others to lead with courage and purpose. Debbie's influence is woven through many of Hamilton's most impactful organizations, making her a true force for public good.  

Debbie is also nominated for a Lifetime Achievement Award. 

Abby Ducay | Early Childhood Education, 2019 

Abby is nominated in the Education/Training category. 

Abby is an emerging leader in early childhood education whose work embodies creativity, equity, and community-building. A Mohawk College grad (‘19) and Registered Early Childhood Educator, Abby has designed and led innovative, child-centred programming in both large centres and a parent-led cooperative, creating environments where children feel safe, capable, and deeply connected.   

Abby integrates belonging, cultural diversity, and self-expression into daily learning, ensuring every child is valued and supported. She models empathy and confidence, empowering children and families alike. Through her vision, positivity, and impact, Abby is shaping a more inclusive and equitable future for our youngest generation of learners and leaders. 

Marlee Gross | Pharmacy Technician, 2023  

Marlee is nominated in the Community Champion category. 

Marlee is a transformative force in Hamilton's youth and community sector through her extraordinary volunteer leadership with Scouts Canada. For over 10 years, she has served simultaneously as Key Scouter for Beavers (ages 5–7) and Section Scouter for Venturers (ages 14–18), both of which are roles that demand hundreds of hours annually. What began as helping a single Beaver colony has evolved into a full-time unpaid commitment that shapes the lives of more than 80 young people each year. A pharmacy technician graduate from Mohawk College by profession, Marlee channels her precision, care, and boundless energy into creating safe, inclusive spaces where children and teens discover confidence, leadership, and belonging. 

Elaine Lee | Business - General, 1996/Business - Marketing, 1996/Aesthetics, 1999

Elaine is nominated in the Community Champion category. 

Elaine is an Anishinaabe woman from Whitefish River First Nation, Bear Clan, living in Hamilton, Ontario. A proud mother of two and respected community leader, she is a three-time Mohawk College graduate and former Commissioned Naval Reserve Officer.  

Since 2011, Elaine has worked with De Dwa Da Dehs Nye> Aboriginal Health Centre, where she now serves as Healthier YOU Program Coordinator. A drum carrier, song holder, and knowledge keeper, she shares traditional teachings that promote holistic wellness and cultural pride. Elaine's leadership uplifts women, youth, and gender-diverse people, fostering inclusive, culturally safe spaces. Her dedication, humility, and strength continue to inspire others to heal, connect, and celebrate Indigenous identity. 

Elaine is also nominated for a Lifetime Achievement Award. 

Jordan Carrier | Native Community Care Counselling & Development, 2005

Jordan is nominated in the Community Champion category. 

Jordan is a proud nêhiyaw-iskwêw (Plains Cree woman) from Piapot First Nation in Treaty Four, now rooted in Hamilton since 2002. She holds a Diploma in Native Community Care, a B.Ed. in Aboriginal Adult Education, an Honours BA in Indigenous Studies, and an MA in Social Justice and Community Engagement. With nearly two decades of experience, Jordan currently provides strategic leadership in outreach and service planning as Director, Special Populations at Castlemain, for class action settlements impacting Indigenous peoples. Her work is rooted in advocacy, cultural connection, and self-determination, and is strengthened by community engagement and volunteerism. She also created One Dish, Many Stories and co-created Call Her Matriarch, podcasts amplifying and reclaiming narratives of Indigenous women and gender-diverse people.

Through the partnership, the college’s brand will be prominently featured throughout the newly transformed venue during major concerts, sporting events and live performances, reaching hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

TD Coliseum opened to great fanfare in late November 2025 with a sold-out, grand opening performance by rock legend Paul McCartney. As the new centerpiece for concerts, sporting events and family entertainment in the Golden Horseshoe, the celebrated building has also featured recent performances by Andrea Bocelli, Jonas Brothers, mgk and comedian Matt Rife and serves as home ice for the Toronto Rock. Upcoming shows include Disney on Ice, Journey, Twice, Ne-Yo and Akon and the 55th annual JUNO Awards in March.

As the team at St. Matthew’s House prepared to celebrate its 50th anniversary, the organization wanted more than a party, it wanted to showcase its inspiring story—where it came from and the impact it makes today.  

Godwin “Delali” Degbey and Jacob Maduka, both class of 2025 graduates of Mohawk College’s Photography – Still and Motion program, were eager to bring that story to life.  

In spring 2025, members of St. Matthew’s House 50^th anniversary planning committee connected with Mohawk College’s Centre for Entrepreneurship. The Hamilton-based non-profit multi-service agency was seeking students to work on a short documentary to be shared at an event they were hosting in November.  

The opportunity emerged as Delali and Jacob were wrapping up their program. The project was facilitated through the college’s Student Enterprise, a fee-for-service program run by the Centre for Entrepreneurship that connects students and recent graduates with real clients.  

Taking on a 50-year story  

Working closely with producers Tim McKenna, Sue Prestedge, and Jane Allison from St. Matthew’s House, Delali and Jacob eagerly took on the challenge of visually telling a complex story spanning five decades. “They told us the direction to go, which is the story they wanted to tell,” Jacob said. “Our part was to visually tell the story.” As international students, Delali from Ghana and Jacob from Nigeria, the project allowed them to demonstrate the skills they’ve built over the two-year program in Canada.  

From the producers’ perspective, the collaboration exceeded expectations. Both Tim and Sue shared how impressed they were with the students as collaborators. “Professional, creative, open to suggestions, great with the St. Matt’s clients and always available for a demanding shooting schedule. We could not have done this without them,” said Tim.  

The students worked as freelancers throughout the project, managing footage, b-roll, and edits while collaborating closely with the producers. “Overall, the students did a fantastic job running this project as freelancers, seeking out support from our team when they needed it,” Natalie said. “This was a great example of how [the college] can offer entrepreneurial experiences to students and recent grads while still providing them with the necessary guidance as young freelancers and entrepreneurs.”  

The final documentary follows a clear narrative arc, from the founding of St. Matthew’s House, through decades of community service, to its vision for the future.   

That sense of purpose resonated deeply in the finished film. “Their belief in the St. Matt’s programs is evident in the final edit,” Tim said.   

Jane Allison added, “The final film is a beautiful story and exactly what we were hoping for. It may have exceeded what we were hoping for, to be honest.”  

The completed 16-minute documentary premiered at St. Matthew’s House’s anniversary celebration in November.   

“I attended the gala, and the documentary our students created was truly the highlight of the evening,” said Program Coordinator and Professor Scott Kenney. “I couldn’t be prouder of how professionally Delali and Jacob represented our program.”  

For Delali and Jacob, the project reinforced the value of experiential learning. “You learn a whole lot that you don’t get to learn in the classroom,” Delali said. “This was real-world experience.”  

As St. Matthew’s House looks ahead to its next 50 years, the documentary stands as a powerful example of how community partnerships, entrepreneurial learning, and student talent can come together to create work that truly matters. 

As Mohawk College's Patient Partnership Program continues to evolve, interactive Q&A sessions with real patient partners have reinforced just how powerful these voices are in shaping student learning, particularly for learners headed into clinical practice.

Most recently, the Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography (DCS) program hosted a patient engagement session that brought together approximately 40 students for an intimate and deeply impactful discussion. The session featured Doug Portwood, who shared his personal and unexpected healthcare journey alongside his wife, Christine (DCS Faculty). Doug spoke candidly about his triumphs and challenges within the healthcare system, offering students heartfelt insight into the moments that profoundly shape the patient experience.

Doug’s story highlighted vulnerability, communication, empathy, and the emotional weight carried by patients and families navigating complex care pathways. His openness created space for reflection and connection, allowing students to better understand how their demeanor, language, and non-verbal cues can influence a patient’s experience and create lasting-effects.

Following the event, several students reached out directly to share how the experience resonated with them on both a professional and personal level:

“Thank you and your husband for sharing! I feel that listening to your husband's story has helped me shape a more sensitive mindset/demeanor heading into clinicals. It also reminded me to call my grandma, as I'm sure my peers also all thought about a loved one today.”

Another student reflected on how emotionally powerful the session was and how it aligned with what they have already experienced within the program:

“I was thinking about your story all day. It was totally emotional! Crying in class today was not on my bingo card!? But if I am honest, I have experienced your kind and genuine nature over the past 2 semesters, and I was truly touched by your story. Sad that you both had to experience that rollercoaster but so thankful that everything turned out well for Doug, you and your family.”

These reflections demonstrate the value of integrating real patient narratives into health education as meaningful extensions of what students are already learning in the classroom.

Experiences like this help bridge theory and practice in a way that is memorable, emotional, and deeply human, ultimately shaping more empathetic, patient-centred healthcare professionals. As the program moves forward, sessions like Doug’s serve as a reminder that sometimes the most impactful learning comes not only from textbooks or simulations, but from listening to the lived experiences of those we care for.

As the program looks ahead, its focus remains on deepening integration across programs, expanding opportunities for co-creation of learning materials, and continuing to elevate patient and caregiver voices in health education. In 2026, the program plans to further this work with the launch of its Patient Advisory Committee (PAC) and a teaching resource bank featuring short, five-minute patient videos that can be integrated directly into classroom learning.

McMaster University will receive over $6,900,000 through the Facilities Renewal Program for renovations to labs and lecture halls, along with elevator modernization.

Mohawk College will receive nearly $4,500,000 through the Facilities Renewal Program to support upgrades to electrical and building automation systems, along with accessibility improvements to washrooms and doors. In addition, the college will receive more than $586,000 through the College Equipment Renewal Fund for robotic hybrid stations for building and construction programs, as well as equipment for programming at the School of Health, such as handheld ultrasound units, medication carts, feeding pumps, wheelchairs and PPE carts.

“Our government is continuing to support Hamilton’s post-secondary sector to ensure that students have more opportunities to succeed in today’s job market,” said Neil Lumsden, MPP for Hamilton East-Stoney Creek. “By upgrading classrooms, infrastructure, and equipment at Mohawk College and McMaster University, we are helping these world-class institutions develop talented, made-in-Hamilton graduates who are ready to contribute to a strong workforce – not just here in our city, but across Ontario.”

This funding is part of the government’s $242 million to upgrade classrooms and equipment at publicly funded colleges and universities across the province. Institutions can use the funding for major building systems upgrades, heating and ventilating system upgrades, as well as mechanical and electrical system upgrades. The funds can also be used to buy educational tools, such as modernized computers and software for teaching purposes, specialized equipment, or machinery for use in labs, shops and classrooms. As a shared responsibility, part of the capital infrastructure program requires colleges and universities to make matching contributions.

This investment builds on the record setting funding from the province for the publicly assisted postsecondary sector, including nearly $1 billion to fund over 100,000 more seats in economy-driving programs such as construction, teaching, nursing, and STEM. By expanding key programs and modernizing learning tools, the government is equipping students to lead, innovate and drive in a rapidly evolving economy.

That's the message from Hamilton-Niagara's Top Employers (2025), announced last week by Mediacorp Canada Inc., which organizes the Canada's Top 100 Employers project. The Hamilton-Niagara winners were announced in a special magazine published by The Hamilton Spectator.

Mohawk College is pleased to announce a new collaboration between the School of Climate Action, the Sustainability Office, and WWF-Canada through the Living Planet @ Campus program. This partnership supports our commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability leadership by offering students experiential learning opportunities, environmental-focused activities, and the ability to obtain WWF-Canada’s Living Planet Leader certification.

Faculty and staff will have opportunities to incorporate WWF-Canada resources into courses, support student-led initiatives, participate in campus-wide sustainability events, and are encouraged to promote these opportunities to students. Applied Research 101 (High School Edition) is a self-paced, online learning experience that demystifies applied research and shows students how ideas move from questions to real-world solutions.

Through interactive modules, short lessons, and creative assignments, students explore:

For many students, the term applied research is unfamiliar before college, even though it plays a central role in how real-world challenges are addressed across industries. When enrolled in Applied Research 101 (High School Edition), students engage in a structured learning experience designed to fit alongside existing coursework and busy schedules. The course is delivered over several weeks through interactive modules and bite-sized lessons that encourage exploration, reflection, and experimentation.

Students complete creative assignments that challenge them to test ideas, think critically, collaborate with others, and reflect on real-world applications of applied research. By balancing theory with practice, the course helps students understand not only what applied research is, but how it is used to solve problems and inform decision-making in real-world contexts.

Designed for Educators, Guidance Counsellors, and Students

Applied Research 101 (High School Edition) was intentionally designed to be flexible and easy to integrate into a variety of learning environments. Hamilton, ON - As our population ages and the complexity of patient needs increases, the demands on our healthcare system and skilled team members in long-term care homes continue to grow. To support this challenge, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton’s Department of Education & Learning, St. Joseph’s Villa, in partnership with Mohawk College, is opening its new living classroom, an innovative learning environment that places health care education and training directly inside a long-term care facility.  

“The living classroom immerses students in real-world senior care from day one,” said Dr. Azim Gangji, vice president, academic, St. Joseph’s Health System. “By learning alongside residents, families, and our experienced care teams, students gain hands-on experience, stronger clinical skills, and a deep understanding of compassionate, person-centred care.” 

Living classrooms allow learners to gain enhanced skills, greater confidence and a deeper understanding of senior care before heading into the workforce. As a result, this integrated model also enhances recruitment and retention in long-term care. 

“Mohawk College recognized the need for a different approach to training the future of healthcare professionals, one that brings education directly into long-term care facilities and prepares students to confidently support older adults, explains Paul Armstrong, president at Mohawk College. “The living classroom is an equal benefit for everyone involved. Students experience meaningful, experiential learning; long-term care teams engage in mentorship and continuous improvement; and residents contribute to shaping the next generation of caregivers.” 

Originally developed under the leadership and partnership of St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, St. Joseph’s Villa and Mohawk College, hosting the living classroom in Hamilton provides accessible training for local students, especially those unable to travel outside the community for their education.  

“This innovative training model will help us enhance recruitment and retention in long-term care, increase the number of healthcare graduates in the region and helps build a sustainable workforce to meet the needs of an aging population, said Mike Heenan, president and CEO of St. Joseph’s Health System. “Together with critical partners like Mohawk College, St. Joseph’s Villa is building a stronger future for senior care in Hamilton.” 

The living classroom was made possible through a $1.98 million Models of Care Innovation Fund grant for Centre(s) for Excellence for Specialized Clinical Training (CEST) from the Ministry of Health. The partnership of St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and Mohawk College was also awarded a living classroom grant from The Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging (RIA) and the Ontario Association of Adult and Continuing Education School Board Administrators (CESBA) of $75,000 for this project.  

This funding also supports living classrooms at other locations throughout the St. Joseph’s Health System to provide leaners with hands on training designed to accelerate the readiness of graduates, expand capacity and enhance workforce development province wide.

Investigating the might of mites threatening honey bee colonies around the globe.

Using artificial intelligence algorithms to create a portable tool for remote wound monitoring and diagnostics and improve patient outcomes.  

Assessing the effectiveness of drones and remote sensing technologies in streamlining the mapping of invasive grasses that thrive in wetlands, ditches and shorelines.

These research initiatives are part of six projects funded through the new Steeves Family Innovation Fund, launched this year through Mohawk College’s IDEAWORKS, a hub of applied research and innovation.

Glen and Heather Steeves supported the creation of the Steeves Family Innovation Fund with a $250,000 gift, which is matched by the College.

The successful researchers and in some cases, their student research assistants, recently presented an overview of their projects and the impact they hope to achieve to the Steeves and their son, Drew. The Steeves were impressed by the scope and range of the projects.

The successful applicants received seed funding between $10,000 and $20,000 for their projects. The goal is to provide opportunities for faculty and staff with no previous research experience and enhance research activities for more experienced researchers. Students also benefit from gaining applied research and industry engagement experience through their roles as research assistants on many of these initiatives.   

“Thanks to Glen and Heather Steeves, we’re able to increase our ability to give faculty and students more opportunities to broaden their research capabilities,” said Jeff McIsaac, Dean of Applied Research and Dean of Engineering Technology & Aviation. “This is an important step in supporting emerging researchers and building a diverse and vibrant applied research community.”

Hamilton, ON – Mohawk College stands out as one of Canada’s top research colleges, ranking 2nd nationally in the 2025 Canada’s Top 50 Research Colleges list by Re$earch Infosource.   

This is the first time the college and its applied research division, IDEAWORKS has achieved 2^nd in the annual rankings. The college has maintained a top-10 ranking for the past seven years, moving to the large college category in 2024.

Mohawk College is flipping the script on international education with a new initiative that expands access to global learning for every student. The program, Beyond Borders, officially launched on November 18 during International Education Week.

While Mohawk College has offered global learning opportunities to students and employees for several years, Beyond Borders provides a streamlined, holistic and accessible framework that brings these experiences together under one coordinated umbrella.

The program is designed to help learners understand how international issues connect to local realities and to prepare them for a world where collaboration across cultures is essential. At the same time, it barriers to entry, making global learning opportunities more visible, navigable and accessible to a wider range of students.

“Beyond Borders strengthens our ability to respond to local and global challenges,” said Thea Laidman, Associate Vice President, International. “Its strength comes from its comprehensive approach and the range of experiences it offers. It ensures global learning isn’t a privilege but part of ordinary campus life.”

Global learning encourages people to examine how culture, identity, and global systems shape their communities. It promotes curiosity, critical thinking, and the ability to work with people from different backgrounds. These experiences help students develop the mindset needed to succeed in a diverse and interconnected world.

Katie Burrows, Vice President, Students, International and Infrastructure, says the goal goes beyond travel. “Beyond Borders is about transformation. It builds the skills and perspectives that define career-ready, globally engaged graduates. It also fosters empathy and a broader understanding of the world.”

Program Highlights:

Global-focused courses
General education courses, including Building Global Skills, introduce global themes in the classroom. A core component of this course is a built-in virtual exchange, enabling students to collaborate with international peers as part of their coursework. Providing access to global learning opportunities without the need to travel. Completion of this course makes students eligible for field studies.

International field studies
Students can participate in a variety of hands-on learning abroad. Beyond Borders will offer two, 10-day interdisciplinary field studies each year for up to 40 students and 4 faculty/staff one in Ireland and one in Costa Rica. This is in addition to any program specific faculty-led field studies.

Awards and bursaries
Financial support will help remove barriers for students who want to participate in field studies, exchanges, and other learning abroad opportunities.  For the Beyond Borders field studies to Ireland and Costa Rica specifically, about half of the cost will be covered through awards and bursaries. Additional awards and bursaries are made available, supported largely by private donors, including long-time partner Guard.me.

Laidman notes that Beyond Borders stands out in the college system as programs of this scale are more common at universities. Embedding of the virtual exchange within a general education course provides up to 180 students per year with the opportunity for this type of learning experience, she said. And offering it across all programs gives Mohawk College students an opportunity to gain valuable global experience and a competitive edge.

At just 19, Mohawk College Photography – Still and Motion student Logan Taylor has already experienced something many aspiring sports photographers can only hope for: shooting not one, but multiple NHL games, all before graduating.  

Logan recently photographed his second professional hockey game with the Toronto Maple Leafs, with a third assignment already booked.   

But this opportunity has been years in the making.  

Logan’s dad, a longtime photographer for the Hamilton Bulldogs, one day gave Logan a glimpse into his world behind the lens.  

“[My dad] asked me if I wanted to come out and shoot a game rather than staying home alone,” Logan said. That first night sealed his path. “I have over 150 games now that I’ve shot.”   

At just 13, his photography career began.  

Building skills in college 

Before coming to Mohawk College, Logan explored photography at Westmount Secondary School in Hamilton, but he says college helped broaden and sharpen his skills.  

“Mohawk had some great options for me,” he said. “They teach a business aspect, they teach video… I shoot studio assignments, products and portraits now.”  

Those courses, he said, give him a stronger foundation and confidence as he gains more real-world experience. “I’m trying to get as much as I can, experience-wise, before I go out and look for a job.”  

More than hockey 

Logan’s sports resume now stretches well beyond the OHL. He covers Hamilton Tiger-Cats football, Forge FC soccer, and the Welland Jackfish baseball team.  

“The sports world is a very small world,” he explains. “One thing leads to another.”  

Those connections have helped to strengthen his portfolio and continues to open more doors.  

When the Hockey Hall of Fame reached out, Logan learned the connection came through his dad, who had shot for them in the past. Soon he found himself walking into an NHL arena with an official credential around his neck.  

“When I finally got in the building and I had my pass with my name on it… I kind of feel like I’ve made it a little bit now,” he said.  

His first assignment? The Pittsburgh Penguins, photographing icons like Sidney Crosby. Next came the Los Angeles Kings, and soon he’ll cover the San Jose Sharks.  

“They started me off with three [games],” Logan said. “After that, I guess we’ll see. I hope that I get more.”

Logan says the support from his program has meant a lot. “They all were really proud of me. They kept congratulating me and asking about it.” 

But more importantly, the NHL experience sharpened his ambitions. 

“Being there is just kind of a different atmosphere,” he said. “I was trying to soak it all in… it really gave me that hunger that this is where I want to spend my career.” 

His ultimate goal? To work full-time in a major sports league, whether it’s the NHL, MLB, NFL, or NBA, he’s open to all of it. 

For now, Logan is finishing his program, growing his portfolio, and preparing for what comes after graduation. 

If the last few months are any indication, he’s well on his way. 

HAMILTON November 13, 2025 - Mohawk College students pursuing studies in sustainability, climate action, biotechnology and environmental technology are eligible for new entrance scholarships created through a generous $100,000 gift from the Paletta family and the Alinea Land Corporation.

Scholarship recipients, who will be based in the College’s School of Climate Action, can gain practical expertise in sustainability solutions, agricultural and medical biotechnology, biomanufacturing, sustainable business models, data use and energy systems. Co-op work terms are available in some programs.

Five $4,000 scholarships based on academic excellence and merit will be awarded each year for five years.

The School of Climate Action, which officially launched in April, offers diploma and degree programs focused on solving real-world problems in a variety of fields, including environment, health and business.

The gift was made by the Paletta family, through the Pasquale and Anita Paletta Family Fund at the Hamilton Community Foundation, and Alinea Land Corporation. Paul and Michael Paletta said they were proud to invest in the next generation of climate action and sustainability leaders who are passionate about building a more sustainable future.

Through the Pasquale and Anita Paletta Family Fund and business initiatives, including Alinea Land Corporation, the Paletta family is dedicated to fostering growth, opportunity, and wellbeing in the communities they call home. Alinea’s work is rooted in the belief that responsible development and education are key to building a thriving and sustainable Ontario.

Mohawk College President Paul Armstrong thanked the Palettas and Alinea Land Corporation for their leadership and generosity.

David Santi, Dean of the School of Climate Action and Dean of the Marshall School of Skilled Trades & Apprenticeship, said the new scholarships are a tremendous opportunity for students committed to pursuing careers in sustainability and climate action.

“We are thankful for this gift which gives us the ability to help meet growing demand from our students for a climate-focused education that will shape their future careers and address climate challenges,” said Santi.

The School of Climate Action will be launching two new applied degree streams next fall. The Honours Bachelor of Technology – Sustainability and the Honours Bachelor of Management – Sustainability are designed to prepare students to lead in the transition to a more sustainable future. Key features include work-integrated learning, applied research and capstone projects, strong links to industry partners, integrated Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing and flexible curriculum delivery.

The School partners with industry, non-profits, local community and government, bringing together diverse perspectives, expertise and resources to collectively advance sustainability and climate action locally, regionally and beyond.

With winter approaching comes the possibility of campus closures due to hazardous weather conditions. It is important to become familiar with Mohawk College’s procedures for closing campuses and to know where to go for the latest news and information.  

Closing campuses is not a decision the college takes lightly. Classes need to be made up, tests and exams may need to be rescheduled and events may need to be cancelled. At Mohawk College, the decision to close the Fennell, Stoney Creek and Airport campuses is guided by the college’s policies and procedures for emergency closures. The college’s facilities and security teams will make the best decision based on the information available at the time.  

UPDATE: Attention IAHS students and employees  

Students attending classes at the Institute for Applied Health Sciences (IAHS) must check both Mohawk College and McMaster University notifications for campus closures due to severe weather. 

• If either Mohawk College OR McMaster University closes, Mohawk classes at the IAHS will be cancelled.
• If Mohawk College closes but McMaster remains open, the IAHS building will stay open; however, Mohawk classes will still be cancelled. 

Important: For clinical placements, please follow departmental instructions regarding whether placements will proceed or be cancelled. 

Always confirm updates from both institutions before travelling to campus. 

When to close campuses 

Mohawk will only close its campuses when remaining open would pose a danger to students and employees while on campus or would prevent a large number of students and employees from coming to campus or returning safely to their homes. The decision to close is made with input from several individuals and includes considerations such as the conditions of the roads in and around Hamilton, and the availability of public transit, as well as the ability to clear campus walkways, roads and parking lots.  

If campuses close  

If the college decides to close campuses due to hazardous weather, the following will apply: 

• All in-person classes and events will be cancelled.
• Virtual classes and services will continue.
• The DBARC will be closed and all athletic activities cancelled.
• Employees who can work remotely will be expected to do so.
• Students on placement are to follow the direction of their faculty and program staff. For placements in other regions, students should use their discretion. Students must follow the policy for reporting absences for their placement location and contact their academic program area. 

When closure announcements will be made  

If it looks like the college will need to close campuses, the goal is to make the closure announcement no later than 6 am that morning. When the college needs to close part way through the day, every effort is made to announce the closure by 3 pm to allow enough time to notify Continuing Education students and instructors involved in evening classes.  

The announcement will specify whether the closure is immediate or to take place at a stated hour. 

No matter what the college decides, it is important for students and employees to make their own assessment about whether or not it is safe to come to campus. The college encourages faculty and employee managers to consider the weather conditions when someone chooses to stay home, recognizing that some people may be traveling from locations experiencing hazardous weather conditions that are different than what is taking place at and around our campuses. 

Get notifications about campus closures  

The best way to learn about closures is to sign up for Mohawk’s SAM (Security Alert Messenger) service. SAM uses text messages, social media, the college website, and email to inform students and employees that the college is closed. SAM is also used for lockdowns and other emergencies that require rapid communication with the college community. It is also helpful to stay tuned to local media outlets, as they will also share news of a college closure.
