Ontario Trillium Foundation - Mohawk College community building project call for applications

The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) and Mohawk College are looking for a community partner in need of an extreme home makeover in 2015.

One eligible nonprofit in Greater Hamilton will be chosen for the third annual community building project by OTF and Mohawk. In 2014, OTF and Mohawk renovated Delta United Church. The Old Firehall Arts Centre for Theatre Ancaster was renovated in 2013.

The partnership is the first of its kind between OTF and an Ontario community college. The OTF provides the grant while Mohawk supplies the faculty-supervised crew of approximately 100 Building Renovation students and secures gifts-in-kind from industry partners.

Interested organizations are asked to attend an information session on Thursday, May 22 at 7 p.m. in the Friendship Hall at Delta United Church at 47 Ottawa St South. Grant applications will be due by Tuesday, July 1 with the community building renovation project to take place over three weeks in March 2015.

Delta United Church in East Hamilton will be a one-of-a-kind classroom for a crew of 100 Mohawk College students for the next three weeks.

Building Renovation students from Mohawk's skilled trades campus in Stoney Creek are carrying out major renovations at the Ottawa Street church in partnership with the Ontario Trillium Foundation until March 28. The church's Friendship Hall, used by more than 400 people each week, will be completely gutted with a new floor, ceiling, windows and lighting installed. Students will also build a new fully accessible entrance to the church.

Mohawk became the first Ontario college to partner with the Ontario Trillium Foundation in 2013 with complete second storey renovations to the Old Firehall Arts Centre in Ancaster. This year, the Ontario Trillium Foundation is providing a $49,272 grant to Delta United Church while Mohawk students and faculty volunteer their time and labour. Building Renovation coordinator Brad MacDonald incorporated an annual community project into his program curriculum seven years ago to give students real-world experience applying their skills and working on job sites. The partnership with the Ontario Trillium Foundation has allowed students to take on a much larger year-end renovation projects.

HAMILTON (March 14, 2013) – The play’s the thing for 100 skilled trades students from Mohawk College.

With a $74,700 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) to Theatre Ancaster, students from Mohawk’s Construction Engineering Technician – Building Renovation diploma program are carrying out major renovations to the second storey of the Old Firehall Arts Centre in Ancaster. Work began March 11 and is scheduled to be completed by March 22.

“It’s great to see so many different people and organizations working together to make our community stronger and more vibrant. I salute everybody involved in this great project,” said The Hon. Ted McMeekin, Minister of Community and Social Services and MPP for Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale.

Minister McMeekin and OTF will present Theatre Ancaster with a plaque during an announcement at the Old Firehall Arts Centre on Friday, March 15 at 2:30 p.m.

This marks the first time in Ontario that OTF, through its grant-making, and a community college have collaborated on a renovation project. Funds from the grant are being used to help cover the costs of renovation materials, new flooring, equipment, plumbing, electrical and costs for permits.

For the past five years, Mohawk professor Brad MacDonald has made a community building project part of the curriculum for his students who volunteer their time. “Our partnership with the Ontario Trillium Foundation allows Mohawk students to apply what they’ve learned in college to work on a major project and make a significant difference in the community,” says MacDonald. The project at the Old Firehall Arts Centre is the largest yet for Mohawk.

“It’s a great partnership,” said Gord Conroy, President of Theatre Ancaster. “ It’s a win-win for everyone. As Brad said, the Mohawk students get superb on-the-job-training, and Theatre Ancaster gains a newly renovated facility in a quick two week turnaround to meet the teaching and rehearsal needs much more effectively for both adult and youth productions and programs.”

Ontario Trillium Foundation & Mohawk College collaborate on community building project

The Ontario Trillium Foundation and Mohawk College are joining forces to carry out an annual community building project in Hamilton.

One of the Foundation’s successful capital grant applicants will benefit from the involvement of students and faculty from Mohawk's Building Renovation Technician program. Approximately 100 students and faculty will volunteer their time and talent to carry out the renovations the last two weeks of March.

The partnership is the first of its kind between the Trillium Foundation and an Ontario community college.

Mohawk Professor Brad MacDonald has involved his students in an annual renovation project that past four years. The most recent project was completed last month with St. Peter's HARRRP Community Centre in the city's North End.

Nonprofits interested in being chosen for the community builders project are asked to register online and attend an information session on Wednesday, May 9 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Hamilton Spectator Auditorium (44 Frid Street).

Application deadline is July 1.

Congratulations Amos Key

Amos Key, a member of Mohawk's Board of Governors and 1997 Mohawk Alumni of Distinction award recipient, has been appointed as a Board Member to the Ontario Trillium Foundation. An agency of the Government of Ontario, the Ontario Trillium Foundation has an annual budget of $120 million and is a leading grant maker in Canada, making more than 1,500 grants annually to support community-based groups in the arts and culture, sports and recreation, environment, and human and social services sectors.

Amos is the former executive director of Woodland Cultural Centre in Brantford. An artist and arts manager, he works with urban Aboriginal youth from Kitchener-Waterloo to Fort Erie and on the preservation of Aboriginal languages. Amos is passionate about developing community spirit and improving the quality of life for First Peoples and all Ontarians.
