During Smart Commute Week all students and staff are encouraged to ride a bike, take the bus, carpool or walk to Mohawk.

The Sustainability Office will be celebrating Smart Commute Week by hosting some exciting on-campus events! Stop by our booths in the C-Wing (near Starbucks) next week to learn about alternative options for commuting to Mohawk. Each day will have a unique theme, and some awesome prizes to be won.

From Monday, Sept. 16 to Friday, Sept. 20, Mohawk staff, students and faculty are encouraged to use a sustainable mode of transportation for their daily commute to and from campus. Ride your bike, take the bus, carpool or walk to Mohawk and you’ll be eligible to win great prizes including a trip to Montreal.

There will also be daily giveaways of free coffee vouchers, fresh local fruit and information pamphlets, as well as additional prizes courtesy of Smart Commute Hamilton.

Monday, Sept. 16- Bike to Mohawk!

Learn about cycling options to Mohawk. Ride your bike to campus and stop by our booth with your helmet to enter for a chance to win the grand prize.

Grand Prize: $100 gift card to the Fennell Store.

When & Where: 7:45 to 10:00AM at the Secure Bike Parking Facility (next to the HSR Loop)

Tuesday, Sept. 17- FREE Bike Repairs!

In partnership with New Hope Community Bike Co-op, we’ll be offering four hours of free bike tune-ups! Tune-ups will be first-come, first-served.

When & Where: 10:00AM to 2:00PM at the Secure Bike Parking Facility (next to the HSR Loop)

Wednesday, Sept. 18- Common Hour Travel Tips

Members of ECOS (the Environmentally Committed Organization of Students) will be providing travel tips, information and snacks to staff and students.

When & Where: Common Hour- Noon to 1:00PM around campus. Just look for the ECOS shirt!

Thursday, Sept. 19- Carpool to Campus!

Visit the new Carpooling Lot to see the new “park” and learn more about how you can access these priority parking spaces. Carpoolers using the lot can enter to win the Grand Prize!

When & Where: 7:45 to 10:00AM at the new Carpool Zone parking lot (next to the Arnie Pub and David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre)

Friday, Sept. 20- Fabulous Transit Friday!

Mohawk Students & Staff, you could win a VIA Rail trip for two to Ottawa for Winterlude, including a two-night stay in a downtown Ottawa hotel. To participate, take the Smart Commute Week Challenge, a week-long campaign that encompasses the spirit of International Car Free Day on September 22. Smart Commute Week encourages commuters to try a sustainable mode of transportation such as carpooling, public transit, walking, cycling and teleworking, and rewards those who already do.

Take the Smart Commute Week Challenge in 3 Easy Steps:

1. Register for your free Smart Commute account ( https://www.carpoolzone.smartcommute.ca/en/my/index.php ), or link to your existing Carpool Zone account.

2. Smart Commute to work during the week of September 19 to September 25.

3. Log your commute using the Trip Diary Tab in Carpool Zone. Your trip diary is your contest entry!

Find out why two wheels are better than four - Bike to Work on May 30

High gas prices got you fuming? Leave the gas guzzler in the garage and take your bike instead during Bike to Work - and School - Day on Monday, May 30.

Bike to Work - and School - Day is annual event that encourages commuters to trade in their four wheel rides for two wheels in an effort to reduce vehicle emissions and adopt healthier lifestyle practices. The event is also a segway into Clean Air Commute Week, which takes place from Monday, June 13 to Sunday, June 19. Other local organizations that will be participating in this year's event include McMaster University, Horizon Utilities, St. Joseph's Healthcare and Hamilton Health Sciences.

To register for Bike to Work Week visit Smart Commute Hamilton's website. Once you register you'll be eligible for prizes including a weekend getaway for two in Northumberland Country.
