What do design thinking, entrepreneurship, assistive technology and drones have in common?

More than you think- they are all topics that Mohawk faculty and staff will be studying over the next ten months.

The Applied Research and Innovation in Education (ARIE) Fund supports faculty and staff research and innovation activities at Mohawk College. Funding will support projects that focus on applied research, teaching and learning, and entrepreneurship.

The wide range of projects selected reflect Mohawk’s commitment to continuous innovation in technology and health, to excelling in applied research and to transforming lives through access to education.

The following projects will receive ARIE funding in 2015/2016:

Mohawk hosted the Institute of Power Engineers' annual Collaboration and Development Day on May 29, 2014 at the College's Stoney Creek Campus. The event brought together representatives from Ontario colleges, industry and government to share ideas and best practices regarding the training of Power Engineers in Ontario and Canada.

Building Reno grads and brothers Chris and Jason Ford receive first Hamilton-Halton Home Builders' Association award

Congratulations to Building Reno grads Chris and Jason Ford on winning the first-ever award from the Hamilton-Halton Home Builders' Association. The two brothers will graduate from Mohawk's Construction Engineering Technician - Building Renovation program this Spring and have already started their own business: Ford Brothers Construction. The HHHBA created the $2,500 award to help recent grads of the Building Reno program who are starting their own business. The award was presented at the program's annual Meet the Grad Night on Thursday, April 18th, (l-r) HHHBA 2nd Vice President Allan Roshko, Chris Ford, Building Reno professor Brad MacDonald, Jason Ford, and HHHBA Executive Officer Mathieu Langelier.

Gerald Marshall Centre Benefit raises $44,000 for campus improvements at STARRT

Congratulations to the organizers and all who attended the 7th Annual Gerald Marshall Centre Benefit last Saturday. The event raised more than $44,000 for campus improvements at Mohawk College's STARRT Campus in Stoney Creek.

Named in honour of the late Gerald Marshall, the Gerald Marshall Centre provides students in the College's truck and trailer programs with hands-on training in a state-of-the-art truck garage that accommodates up to three full-size tractor trailers. The Marshall family donated $1.2 million to the Centre, as a tribute to Gerald, founder and owner of G. Marshall Transport Ltd. The family continues to raise money for the Gerald Marshall Fund to support the transformation of the Stoney Creek Campus and enhance the college’s Truck and Coach Apprenticeship program.

Carpentry Apprenticeship Programs celebrates exceptional students

Mohawk’s Carpentry Apprenticeship Program has awarded its annual Best in Class Student Awards to three students from its Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Levels.

Nick Borgdorff, Basic Level, Jeremy Anderson, Intermediate Level and Jonathan Hamilton, Advanced Level, each received a gift certificate valued at $100 from Lee Valley Tools. The students were judged on their grades, attendance, adherence to safety standards and their overall attitude in the program.

Congratulations to Nick, Jeremy and Jonathan.

7th annual Gerald Marshall Centre Benefit March 2

The 7th annual Gerald Marshall Centre Benefit takes place March 2 at Michelangelo's Banquet Centre. Tickets are $60 for dinner, games and a show (Banned from Heaven) or $30 for games and the show. For more information, contact Linda Marshall at 905.317.5644. The Gerald Marshall Centre for Transportation opened in February 2010 at Mohawk's skilled trades campus in Stoney Creek. Approximately 400 apprentices train at the centre annually for careers as heavy truck and coach technicians. The late Gerald Marshall founded G. Marshall Transport with a single truck in 1970 and over the next 24 years, grew the company to include 24 trucks and trailers. Proceeds from the benefit are invested in the centre and student bursaries.

Today's Trucking has this story about HINO Motors' donation of a 2012 195 truck to the Mohawk's Truck and Coach Technician program at the STARRT Campus. HINO made the presentation to the students during a tour of the company's Woodstock, Ontario plant in late November. The donation was also featured in the Woodstock Sentinel Review and on 104.7 The Heart FM in Woodstock.

STARRT hosts first-ever Skilled Trades Expo

Do you have old or broken electronics adding clutter to your life? Let the Sustainability Office recycle them for you.

In partnership with MIDA RPM and Ontario Electronic Stewardship (OES), the Mohawk College Sustainability Office will be hosting an Electronic Waste Recycling Drive at all Mohawk campuses. You can bring in your electronic waste on any of the following days:

Brantford Campus- Thursday, October 11^th, 2012 between 8:00am-11:00am outside the Student Engagement Office.

STARRT Campus- Tuesday, October 16^th, 2012 between 8:00am-11:00am outside the Student Engagement Office.

Fennell Campus- Wednesday, October 17^th, 2012 between 8:00am-11:00am and 4:00pm – 7pm in the MCACES Lounge.

IAHS Campus- Thursday, October 18^th, 2012 between 11:00am-3:00pm in the lobby.

Bring in your unwanted devices or used batteries and they will be properly disposed of in a way that is safe for the environment, and convenient for you. Everyone that participates in the recycling drive by bringing in a recyclable item will receive a voucher for a free coffee, redeemable with a reusable coffee mug from Tim Horton’s.

Visit the booth for a great opportunity to take part in one of many programs and services offered by the Sustainability Office.

OSAP loan distribution will begin at the STARRT Campus on Wednesday, Sept. 21.

STARRT Campus - Rm A111 Welcome Centre

9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday - Friday

REMINDER: Wait for Financial Aid to email you BEFORE coming to pick up your loan.

Students are reminded that they should not report to the Loan office until they have received an email from Financial Aid informing that their loan is ready for pick-up.

Once you've received your email from Financial Assistance confirming that your OSAP loan is available for pick-up, please bring:

your social insurance card

a government-issued photo ID

and your Mohawk student ID

The hours and locations for OSAP distribution at other campuses is as follows:

Fennell Campus – C102 The Square

9:30 to 4 p.m. for Fennell and STARRT students

Brantford Elgin Campus – Room A102

9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for Elgin & Laurier students
