When first-year Mohawk College journalism student Jillianne King-Goddard won the prestigious Michael Monty Scholarship from the Ontario Association of Broadcasters Monday, it was a proud moment – but it also represented a victory in her struggle against a hidden hardship.

In addition to being one of the most talented and hard-working students in the journalism program, Jillianne has also battled mental illness.

Jillianne was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder (with anxiety/dissociative behaviours) in 2011 after being admitted into a psychiatric unit for suicidal tendencies.

She struggled with mental health during her youth, but her condition started to worsen when she was 19. Eventually she was too physically weak and anxiety-ridden to leave her house.

Despite these obstacles Jillianne has used her determination to succeed and her strength of character to build a life as a successful student and leader at Mohawk College. And her goal of becoming a journalist has been a driving force.

That drive was recognized by the OAB during its annual Career Day on Monday. She won the Michael Monty Scholarship in recognition of her academic excellence and extensive volunteer work.

“I’m very humbled because I know it’s such a big honour,” says Jillianne. “I know there are many other students that work really hard on a daily basis.”

Volunteering is a huge part of Jillianne’s life. She gives her time to a wide variety of organizations, from the Aids Crisis Response Team, to assisting disadvantaged women in Uganda launch their own businesses.

“Because people have invested so much in me, I want to be that difference in someone else’s life,” she says. “I want to be somebody who inspires other people or gives them what they need to also see a purpose for themselves.”

Jillianne’s professors saw her commitment to the community from the moment she applied to Mohawk.

“When I saw her application, I thought she was much older than she was, simply because of the amount of volunteer work she had done,” says Mohawk College Journalism Coordinator Kurt Muller. “She’s been a real asset to the program, and a pleasure to have in class.”

Jillianne is open about her struggle with Bipolar Disorder. She wants her story to help end the stigma over mental illness, and help others get the support they need.

“For me, having people believe in me is a huge part of continuing to thrive,” she says. “They can help me carry my load when I don’t have the strength to anymore.”

College wide news,Jillianne King-Goddard,Michael Monty Scholarship,Mohawk College,Ontario Association of Broadcasters,Student

" width="300" height="189" /> Christine CiCarlo's second-year Financial Services class raised more than $21,300 for Food4Kids.

Mohawk College's Financial Services students have raised more than $21,300 for Food4kids, a local charity committed to making sure that children aged 5-14 don't hungry the weekends.

The $21,000 will be enough to feed 50 children every week for one school year, says Food4Kids Executive Director Lena Bassford. So successful was the fundraiser, she adds, that Food4Kids is using the money to launch a weekend food program at another school in Hamilton and will name that program in Mohawk's honour. The official launch will happen later this year.

Food4Kids accepts food and cash donations. The food is delivered to participating schools every Friday. The unmarked packages are quietly tucked into the students' bags and knapsacks before they leave for the weekend. Each package contains enough healthy, nutritious food for an entire weekend.

"Without these donations these kids would have nothing. They would go hungry the entire weekend," says Lena.

For many parents the program not only helps feed their children but also helps ease the financial burden, she says. Many work two or more jobs to make ends meet. This program means they can spend a little more time at home with their kids.

This is the first time the second-year Financial Services students have raised funds for Food4Kids. In previous years, the class has focused its efforts on getting people to donate to Canadian Blood Services and last year raised funds for the Rotary Club. The annual challenge helps students hone their sales skills, which they will need to approach prospective clients if they want to succeed in the Financial Services sector. It's also chance for the students to impress potential employers.

Christine DiCarlo,College wide news,Faculty,Financial Services,Food4Kids,Mohawk College,Student

After claiming the first set 25-22, the Mountaineers found themselves in trouble dropping two straight sets to the OCAA’s top ranked team the Humber Hawks by scores of 25-16 and 25-22.

With their backs against the wall, the Mountaineers staved off elimination multiple times and eventually got the better of the Hawks in an incredible 30-28 fourth set sending the match to a fifth set tiebreak.

In the game’s final frame the Mountaineers carried all the momentum and clinched the gold medal with a 15-8 set to win the match 3-2.

Mohawk’s Trevor McLaughlin put together a 21 point performance in the final game including 18 kills, one service ace and twio stuff blocks, while adding 14 digs. Eric Danecke had 13 kills, one ace and two blocks. Bryce Marcussen contributed nine kills, one ace and three blocks. Terrel Bramwell who was named the championships most valuable player had a brilliant performance in the final for Humber as he posted 27 kills in helping his team earn the silver medal.

For the Mountaineers it’s their fourth consecutive year medaling at the OCAA Championship and their first gold medal since the 2007-08 season. For Humber they have now medaled in four of the last five years and return to the podium after being shut out a season ago.

Both the Mountaineers and the Humber Hawks have qualified for the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Volleyball National Championship which takes place March 4th through 8th at Briercrest College and Seminary in Caronport, Saskatchewan.

After winning each of their semi-final matches in the 3rd place side the Fanshawe Falcons and Algonquin Thunder squared off for the bronze medal in their second games of the day. Algonquin, who were pushed to the limit by the Durham Lords in a five set marathon in the semis, seemed to run out of gas in the bronze final.

Fanshawe came out aggressive leading to a clean 3-0 sweep over the Thunder by set scores of 25-19, 25-16, and 25-22 to earn the bronze medal at the Championship.

Derek Braun was named player of the game for Fanshawe after a 13 point effort while Ian McAlpine was awarded player of the game for Algonquin with a 7 point effort.

The bronze medal for Fanshawe is the first time they have won a medal at the event since the 2006-07 season when they also earned bronze.

championships,College wide news,fennell campus,Mohawk College,Mountaineers,OCAA,Student,Volleyball

Pathways Coordinator Linda Basso says this year's fair will be the biggest yet and include newcomers such as the Ontario College of Art and Design and Loyalist College.

College and university attendance at the annual fair has grown steadily in recent years due to increasing demand from students for programs that build on their Mohawk credential, says Basso. The province is also pushing public institutions to develop more degree completion opportunities as part of a province-wide credit transfer initiative, now in its third year.

"We're seeing more and more of Ontario's public post-secondary schools wanting to attract Mohawk students," says Basso. "And more and more students are coming to Mohawk with the expectation that their program will help them earn a degree or certificate faster."

The latest student entrance survey showed that nearly 45 per cent of students intend to continue on to university after graduation, she added.

Students who attend the fair will get to speak directly to representatives from the attending institutions. The reps will be able to provide information on program options, degree completion pathways, admission criteria, application procedures, deadlines and fees, and study abroad opportunities. There will also be people on hand to show students how to search the ONTransfer website, and representatives from Student & Graduate Employment services at Mohawk will also be there to answer questions.

Students will be asked to swipe their ONE Card for a chance to win an iPad or one of 4, $50 ONE Card credits. Using your ONE Card also lets the College know which programs are most interested in pathway opportunities. The College will use that data to better serve students at next year's fair.

The seven winning entries ties the program's previous best effort from 2011. Also, for the first time, one of Mohawk’s students, Gage Varga was part of four winning entries.

"This is an impressive feat, given that most students would love to just have one winning entry." said Creative Advertising Professor Jef Petrossi.

Applied Arts is a creative magazine which focuses on advertising and design. Their student annual is made of entries from around the world. Which means Mohawk Students had to go up against powerhouse private schools like the Miami Ad School.

One of the winning entries was actually created through the college’s new entity ‘the Agency’. A Youtube commercial for the Bay Area and Science Engineering demonstrates how a various form of sciences work in a clever way.

Last Saturday, 60 Mohawk College alumni, student and staff volunteers and their families turned out to plant 300 trees along a stretch of Lake Ontario shoreline at Confederation Park.

Mohawk College's Sustainability Office teamed up with the Mohawk College Alumni Association and Earth Day Hamilton-Burlington to organize the first-ever Planting Our Roots event. The volunteers were joined by Mohawk College President, Rob MacIsaac, Vice President Academic, Cheryl Jensen, and Mohawk College Foundation President, Wayne Joudrie for a morning of tree planting and a lesson in biodiversity and conservation. Other key partners in the project were the City of Hamilton and the Hamilton Conservation Authority.

Planting Our Roots is part of a multi-year program that will prevent expansion of invasive tree species and provide some competition and diversity for the local ecosystem. The 300 trees planted at Confederation Park will help anchor the soil, protect from further soil erosion and increase biodiversity, while providing enhanced habitat for migratory birds. Trees planted include Trembling Aspen, Large Tooth Aspen and Eastern Cottonwood. The three species will compete with the invasive Black Locust tree.

Earth Day Hamilton-Burlington provided lessons on tree planting while explaining the importance of the project and benefits to the diverse plant and animal species that live along the shoreline. Earth Day also coordinated an on-location waste program where nearly all lunch items were composted or recycled.

Mohawk thanks all of the volunteers for their participation at the first annual Planting Our Roots.

City of Hamilton,College wide news,Earth Day Hamilton-Burlington,Hamilton Conservation Authority,HamOnt,Mohawk College,Planting our Roots,rob macisaac,Staff,Student,sustainability

The Student Feedback on Teaching online survey for the Winter 2013 term started Monday, March 11 and runs to Monday, March 25.

All post-secondary day students will receive an email with a link to their customized and confidential surveys. The surveys can be completed on smartphones, tablets, laptops and computers. This feature allows you easy access to the surveys anywhere, anytime, and anyplace that your electronics work with Wi-Fi connection.

Students will be asked to identify where their teachers excel in the classroom, how they could do an even better job of delivering a quality education, and to provide feedback on your courses. Survey results will be shared with teachers, their associate deans and deans after final marks have been submitted for the fall term. Results are used to commend faculty members for a job well done, and to assist with professional development plans for faculty.

Here's what some of our faculty had to say about feedback they've received from students over the years . . .
