Mohawk College Transit Terminal opens Sunday

HSR buses will start using the new Mohawk College Transit Terminal on the corner of Fennell Ave. and West 5th Street this Sunday, March 27. All buses arriving to and leaving the Fennell Campus will use the new location.

The new terminal features modern, bright and safe platforms and waiting areas, large shelters with seating, detailed signage at each platform, bike racks, and radiant heaters for the winter months. Relocating bus traffic to the Mohawk College Transit Terminal will alleviate bus traffic on campus and make it easier for passengers to transfer between bus routes. It will also better integrate Mohawk with Hamilton's larger transportation network. The terminal will operate seven days a week, including holidays.

Buses/Routes by platform:

Platform 1: 20 A-Line Express - Southbound & 21 Upper Kenilworth - Southbound
Platform 2: 33 Sanatorium - Southbound
Platform 3: 20 A-Line Express - Northbound & 21 Upper Kenilworth - Northbound
Platform 4: 33 Sanatorium - Northbound & 35 College - Northbound
Platform 5 (located on West 5th Street): 35 College - Southbound

Please note that the Terminal roadways are for buses only. Signs will be posted along Fennell Ave and West 5th Street to warn motorists.

HSR tests Mohawk College Terminal ahead of planned opening this spring

Mohawk's new Transit Terminal at the corner of Fennell Ave. and West 5th St. is on schedule to open in the spring of 2016. The HSR (Hamilton Street Railway) did some test runs at the new Mohawk College Terminal on Wednesday to confirm the roadways and stops have the necessary clearances to accomodate HSR's current fleet. The Mohawk College Terminal will help make the campus more pedestrian friendly and improve traffic flows on campus by taking city buses off of internal roadways.

Discounted HSR passes now available to Mohawk employees

The Mohawk
College Sustainability Office and Smart Commute Hamilton are introducing a discounted HSR transit passes for all Mohawk College employees starting this September.

The pilot
program will run from September 2012 to April 2013, and is designed to provide
all Mohawk College employees with an exclusive 25% discount on monthly HSR
transit passes. The Mohawk Student Association introduced significantly discounted passes for the College's Hamilton-based students in 2010.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Simply
complete the membership agreement here and bring it to the Fennell
Campus Bookstore. The Bookstore will keep your form on file, and sell you your
monthly transit pass at a 25% discount. This form must be completed prior to
purchasing your first discounted pass, but your membership will never expire through
the duration of the pilot program, so you only need to fill out the form once.

HOW MUCH WILL I SAVE?

All Mohawk
employees will receive an automatic discount of 25% off the regular adult
monthly pass price of $87, which makes your cost $65.25. If you already commute
by HSR, that’s an immediate saving of $21.75 every month, or $174 if you participate in all 8 months of the pilot program.

If you
currently commute by car, your savings will be even greater! You’ll save on the
cost of fuel, vehicle maintenance, and parking ($525+ annually).

HOW DOES THIS HELP THE ENVIRONMENT?

You’ll be
helping to reduce your personal carbon footprint by lowering the amount of
harmful emissions that result from commuting in a single-occupant vehicle. The
average vehicle emits 240g CO2e/km, whereas the average bus trip will emit 77g
CO2e/km, which equals close to a 70% reduction in your commuting footprint.

The Sustainability Office encourages all Mohawk staff to explore the
option of using HSR transit and are here to answer any questions you may have.
