High school students in Grades 10, 11 and 12 will get hands-on learning throughout the year at ArcelorMittal Dofasco and Mohawk. HAMILTON (Oct. 22, 2015) – The Hon. Ted McMeekin, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, and Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger are among the nine graduates receiving Alumni of Distinction Awards from Mohawk College next Tuesday.

The 18^th annual Mohawk Alumni of Distinction Awards Dinner take place Oct. 27 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Michelangelo Event and Conference Centre (1555 Upper Ottawa St.). Alumni of Distinction recipient and award-winning sports broadcast Jim Tatti is serving as master of ceremonies.

NEXT STOP MOHAWK COLLEGE TERMINAL. Mohawk College President Ron McKerlie, the Hon. Ted McMeekin, Mayor Fred Eisenberger & Mohawk Students' Association President Luke Baylis get ready to ride to the future home of the newest transit terminal on Hamilton Mountain.

Hamilton, ON (September 25, 2015) – Construction has begun on a new transit terminal at the corner of Fennell Avenue and West 5^th that will further improve service for Mohawk College students and Mountain residents.

The Mohawk College Terminal is part of a $3.3 million investment in Hamilton transit funded by Metrolinx. The funding for the terminal is in addition to the $1 billion announced by the Government of Ontario May to build Hamilton Light Rail Transit.

The terminal will service Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) routes on the Mountain, including the A-Line, from a convenient location for passengers commuting to both the college and surrounding area. Commute times will be shortened as HSR buses will no longer drive through Mohawk’s pedestrian-first campus.

The majority of construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2015 with shelters and passenger amenities to follow in early 2016.

The Mohawk College Terminal will feature five bays with transit shelters and real-time service information.

More than 4,100 students, faculty and staff take public transit daily to and from Mohawk’s Fennell Campus.

Mohawk is renovating the terminal’s entrance to the Fennell campus and building an indoor heated waiting area for passengers.

The Mohawk Students’ Association partners with the HSR to provide all full-time students with an annual bus pass.

The number of daily transit trips to and from the Fennell Campus increased 68 per cent between 2009 and 2011.

Since 2009, more than $90 million has been invested in renewing Mohawk’s three campuses for the benefit of students.

The City of Hamilton received approximately $29.8 million in Metrolinx Quick Win funds through the 2008 Ontario Budget to be used for municipal capital expenditures for transit vehicles and infrastructure to support B-Line Improvements (King-Main corridor) and A-Line Improvements (James-Upper James Corridor).

Reminder: Garth to Fennell to Mohawk College for Pan Am park and ride shuttle service

Taking the Pan Am park and ride shuttle at Mohawk's Fennell Campus? Avoid the construction at West 5th and Fennell Avenue. Take Garth Street to Fennell Avenue instead.

Spectators using the Pan Am park and ride shuttle service at Mohawk College's Fennell Campus (HAM 3) are advised to:

Drive north on Garth Street

Turn right (east) onto Fennell Avenue

Turn right into the parking lot just past Alumni House (marked with HAM 3 Pan Am signs).

Due to major road construction, no left turns are allowed from West 5th onto Fennell Avenue.

Parking is $5 if booked in advance online or $10 at the lot. The cost of riding the shuttle to the CIBC Pan Am Stadium is included in the ticket price.

Mohawk College hosting shuttle service for Pan Am spectators

A Pan Am Games park-and-ride shuttle service will be offered at Mohawk College's Fennell Campus from Saturday, July 11 to Sunday, July 26. The shuttle will run between the campus and the CIBC Hamilton Pan Am Stadium for all 30 soccer matches. Buses will pick up and drop off spectators along the west side of the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre (DBARC on the above map).

Up to 1,000 parking spots in lots P10 and P11 will be reserved for Pan Am parking. Students, faculty and staff who use these lots are asked to please park in lot P13 during the Games.

Pan Am spectators will arrive on campus using the north-west entrance off Fennell Avenue next to Alumni House. Please exit the campus using Governors Boulevard onto Fennell Avenue (to the east of the student residence).

Shuttle buses will begin running at 2:30 p.m. during weekday games so please allow extra time when leaving the campus from mid-afternoon to early evening. Security will be on hand to direct traffic.

Leif worked with Will at a Toronto studio in the late 1990s. "Everyone knew who Will Davies was," Leif tells the Spectator. "You would speak of him reverentially. If you were a young professional you aspired to be Will Davies. He was the most prominent advertising illustrator in Canada."

HAMILTON (June 8, 2015) - Mohawk College will recognize three outstanding community leaders during this week’s Convocation ceremonies in the McIntyre Performing Arts Centre at the Fennell Campus.

Patricia Amos, Director of Education for the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board from 2009 to 2015, a founding member of Mohawk’s Access Cabinet, founding member of the Hamilton Best Start Network and a champion for improving access to education, will also be inducted as a Distinguished Fellow on Monday, June 8 at 7 p.m.

Mohawk will induct Six Nations Polytechnic President and CEO, Order of Ontario recipient for contributions to Aboriginal post-secondary education, first Executive Director of the College Standards and Accreditation Council and past Mohawk College Board of Governor Rebecca Jamieson as a Distinguished Fellow on Wednesday, June 10 at 7 p.m.

Mohawk will confer an Honorary Diploma in Business Administration on Chairman and CEO of Fluke Transport and Fox 40 International Inc., entrepreneur, inventor, referee, Hamilton Citizen of the Year and Hamilton Gallery of Distinction recipient Rox Foxcroft on Thursday, June 11 at 7 p.m.

Mohawk also finished first among GTHA college for graduate satisfaction rate and graduate employment rate, with 85.7 per cent of students working within six months of graduating from Mohawk.

Mohawk has published an Open for Business and Ready to Partner guide that highlights how private, public and non-profit employers can work with the college and who to contact to explore potential partnerships. Mohawk has also launched a survey to get feedback from current and prospective partners.

SURGE connects entrepreneurial Mohawk students with community resources, offers mentorship and career coaching and runs year-round on-campus workshops, events and competitions. Mohawk College students have won three gold, three silver and five bronze medals at Skills Ontario's 2015 Ontario Technological Skills Competition. More than 2,000 high school and college students compete in 67 skilled trades and technologies contests. The competition is the largest in Canada.

Mohawk College shares stage with Hamilton Community Foundation to build pathways to post-secondary education

HAMILTON (May 4, 2015) –Dana Robbins, Vice President and Group Publisher with Metroland Media Group, will deliver the keynote address at Mohawk College’s inaugural Partnership Dinner with the Hamilton Community Foundation (HCF).

The Mohawk College Partnership Dinner will be held on Monday, May 25 at Liuna Station.

Robbins is the Grand Winner of the 2015 Cicero Speechwriting Awards, an international competition run by Vital Speeches of the Day. The dinner will also showcase how three organizations supported by HCF and Mohawk -Mission Services, Kiwanis Boys and Girls Club and Liberty for Youth - are serving children and youth in the community.

Mohawk’s Partnership Dinner replaces the college’s annual President’s Dinner. Each year, a different college partner will co-host the dinner with Mohawk.

“We’re sharing the stage with college partners who are committed to transforming lives and building community,” says President Ron McKerlie. “The Hamilton Community Foundation is a valued partner that plays a pivotal role in helping children and youth realize their potential and achieve their dreams.”

The Hamilton Community Foundation (HCF) is one of the founding partners of Mohawk’s Access Project. The project aims to help young people from priority neighbourhoods graduate from high school and go on to college, university or an apprenticeship.

“The Hamilton Community Foundation is proud to have been chosen as the inaugural partner for this dinner,” says President and CEO Terry Cooke. “It represents not just our shared focus on improving access to post-secondary education but the fact that big, complex change comes about when a community works together on a common goal.”

Mohawk College professor Shaun Iles wins Excellence in Online Teaching Award

Mohawk professor Shaun Iles was one of four educators from across North America to receive an online learning excellence awards from Pearson.

Shaun was recognized with a 2015 Excellence in Online Teaching Award for building a fully gamified online course in sustainability where students move through the course content at their own pace. To engage students, Shaun uses a host of technology tools, including intelligent agents, simulators, blogs and virtual conferences. Shaun's course is used to teach other educators how to use custom grading formulations, module gating, bonuses, peer evaluation and gaming to increase retention rates, grades and student satisfaction.

Pearson also presented awards of excellence to educators at Drexel University, Ryerson University and Berklee College of Music. Pearson is the world's leading learning company, with 40,000 employees in more than 80 countries.

Mohawk hosted a Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters forum on additive manufacturing (industrial 3D printing), which featured a keynote by the Hon. The Government of Canada announced a $2.3 million investment earlier this week in Mohawk's Additive Manufacturing Resource Centre. The Natural Sciences and Engineering Resource Council (NSERC) grant is the third that Mohawk has received and to date the Government of Canada has invested $11.5 million to support applied research projects with industry partners.

Mohawk Mountaineers defeat Champlain Cavaliers 79-77

The host Mohawk Mountaineers are hoping to regain the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball title they got in 2012. But they had a real scare before scoring a 79-77 decision decision over the Champlain Saint-Lambert Cavaliers of Quebec in a jam packed David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre on Hamilton Mountain Thursday night (March 19). And it was edge of your seat excitement as the two point victory indicates.

The Mountaineers, seeded number three in the championship, came roaring out of the gate with a pair of three pointers to begin the ball game and they led by nine points before the number six Cavaliers rallied and trailed 18-16 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter Champlain took the lead by one point, setting up a back and forth contest with the Cavaliers going to the dressing room with a 42-40 lead.

It was more give and take for the two teams in the third quarter and Champlain kept their two point lead, 58-56.

The drama continued into the final quarter when Lamar Barr put the Mountaineers up 59-58 and the intensity continued to the very end. Both teams were called for technical fouls in the fourth period and the fans were really caught up in the play. Jeff Hunt would score what turned out to be the winning basket in the dying seconds.

The top player in Canada, Matt Fennell scored 28 points to lead Mohawk's scoring, but the man who saved the Mountaineers on this night was their Player of the Game, Andrew Cicuttini, who was all over the court, scoring 23 points and adding 14 rebounds in a very physical game.

Champlain's Player of the Game, J.J. Hamel-Carey, had 21 points. His teammate, Nicholas Noble added 15.

The Mountaineers will now face the top seeded Vancouver Island University Mariners in the semi finals Friday night at 8:30. The Cavaliers will try to stay alive in the bronze medal race when they play the Lethbridge Kodiaks Friday at 3:00 pm.

Second Year Advertising and Marketing Communications Management students Caitlin Cassidy (on left) and Katlynn Gwalchmai are finalists in the Integrated Communication category. They are up against entries from Ryerson University and University of Toronto.

“It’s the first year of this award show,” says Wayne Aubert, Program Coordinator. “What I liked about it was that students could submit work that they had done in-school, rather than have to work to an awards brief. They are being recognized for hard work that they’ve done in-school.”

A panel of 31 leading industry professionals evaluated nearly 130 submissions from 20 post-secondary institutions across Canada in categories of Written Word, Audio Storytelling, Digital Design, Videography, Photography and Integrated Communication.

“As part of my Intro to Integrated Communications course, I gave the students an already existing advertising campaign (Nabob: Respect The Bean) and asked them to extend the campaign into Direct Marketing Communications, Sales Promotions and Public Relations activities," explains Nancy Kovacs, a professor in the Advertising program. "The students then incorporated these so that every area felt like a cohesive whole."

“I was really impressed with the quality of the thinking and the seamlessness with which Katlynn and Caitlin incorporated into their overall campaign.”

The Final award winners are announced at a dinner and ceremony on April 20.

Orange is the New Black star Laverne Cox will talk about her life and journey as a transgender actress at Mohawk College's Fennell Campus in Hamilton on Monday, March 23.

Social Inc. in partnership with the Mohawk Students’ Association, The Well (LGBTQ Community Wellness Centre of Hamilton) and the Sexual Assault Centre of Hamilton and Area present an evening with Laverne Cox at the McIntyre Performing Arts Centre.

Cox will discuss her road to womanhood starting from a Christian home in Mobile, Ala., to reaching her current life as an actress and activist for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, intersex, asexual and others’ rights. Last month, Glamour magazine named Cox as a 2014 Woman of the Year, a title annually given to a select group of influential women.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. (general seating) with Cox taking the stage at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $35, with special $10 tickets available to Mohawk College students at the Mohawk Students' Association office (please show One Card for identification). A limited number of VIP tickets are also available, with special reserved seating and a meet and greet with Cox before the event. Tickets are available online.

Mohawk College to open North Pole branch plant for 450 Hamilton children in need

HAMILTON (Dec. 1, 2014) -- Four hundred and fifty children in need are on the nice list for Mohawk College’s McKeil School of Business toy drive.

The school is collecting toys for every student at St. Ann Catholic Elementary in Hamilton’s lower city and 100 children at Mountain Kidz Klub.

Last year, the McKeil School of Business collected $13,000 worth of Christmas presents for 450 children. The annual toy drive is organized by Santa’s helper and Advertising program coordinator Wayne Aubert, who launched the toy drive to instil a spirit of giving in Mohawk students.

The community is welcome to join Mohawk students, faculty and staff in supporting the toy drive by dropping off unwrapped gifts to M Wing at Mohawk’s Fennell Campus, across from the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre.

The Joyce Foundation has joined the Marshall family in matching donations made to the just established Rob MacIsaac Future Ready Bursary. Both The Joyce Foundation and the Marshall family are matching up to $50,000 in donations to the bursary for Mohawk students in financial need. The Marshall family have been long-time supporters of the college, with leadership gifts to the renewal of the Stoney Creek Campus including $1.2 million in 2006. In 2012, The Joyce Foundation donated $1.5 million in support of bursaries for students from Code Red neighbourhoods. HAMILTON, ON – (Jan. 22, 2014) Siemens Canada and Mohawk College announced plans today to further strengthen their partnership for the benefit of students in the college’s technology programs.

Per a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by Siemens Canada President and CEO Robert Hardt and Mohawk College President Rob MacIsaac, Siemens and Mohawk will look at opportunities to collaborate on developing curriculum, delivering training, conducting applied research, serving on program advisory committees and offering co-operative work terms and internships.

“The private and public sectors both have vital roles to play in ensuring Canada remains competitive and innovative on a global stage,” says Robert Hardt, President and CEO, Siemens Canada. “We must be a voice and a partner for improved training, education and apprenticeship programs that give students the skills they need to participate in this new economy. Today’s MOU is a positive step in that direction and we are thrilled to be partnering with Mohawk College.”

In 2008, Mohawk and three other Ontario colleges joined forces in an award-winning partnership that continues to meet the workforce training and development needs of Hydro One. In 2012, Mohawk and Walters Inc. launched a joint program to train welders and steel fabricators.

Mohawk's parting gift for college president is a student bursary

The Mohawk College Foundation has established the Rob MacIsaac Future Ready Bursary to provide tuition assistance to students who have unlimited potential yet limited financial means. Improving access to postsecondary education for young people in high need neighbourhoods was one of Rob's priorities during his tenure at Mohawk. The Marshall family, longtime Mohawk supporters, will match the first $50,000 donated to the bursary. Rob completes his term as Mohawk President next week and will then become President and CEO of Hamilton Health Sciences.
