Mohawk to Recognize Nine Outstanding Political, Business and Community Leaders During Spring Convocation Ceremonies

HAMILTON (May 30, 2017) – The father of the Ontario college system will receive special honours during Mohawk’s spring convocation ceremonies.

The Hon. William “Bill” Davis, who established the Ontario college system as Minister of Education and University Affairs and served as Premier of Ontario from 1971 to 1985, will be awarded an honorary diploma as Mohawk celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Mohawk will induct eight other Distinguished Fellows in recognition of their outstanding professional achievements, expert status with their professions, business acumen and contributions to the college:

  • Denise Christopherson (Distinguished Fellow – Honorary Diploma) is the CEO of YWCA Hamilton.
     
  • Dr. Doug Barber (Distinguished Fellow – Adjunct Professor) was the co-founder of Linear Technology Inc. and served as President and CEO of Gennum Corporation.
     
  • June Barber (Distinguished Fellow) was a core member of the Textures Fine Crafts artists’ collective, Past President of the McMaster Women’s Club, a member of the Hamilton Potter’s Guild and who, together with her husband Doug, were the founding benefactors of City School by Mohawk.
     
  • Linda Haslam-Stroud (Distinguished Fellow) is the President of the Ontario Nurses’ Association (ONA) and is a Mohawk College graduate.
     
  • Rick Hill Sr. (Distinguished Fellow – Adjunct Professor) serves a Curriculum Developer for the Bundled Arrows Initiative – a consortium of local universities and colleges that include Mohawk College.
     
  • Louie Leombruni (Distinguished Fellow) is the Manager of ArcelorMittal University’s Regional Campus at ArcelorMittal Dofasco in Hamilton and a Mohawk College graduate.
     
  • Linda Marshall (Distinguished Fellow – Adjunct Professor) is a philanthropist, motivational speaker, President of Marshall Connects and a Mohawk College Alumni of Distinction recipient.
     
  • Steve Stipsits (Distinguished Fellow) is the President and Owner of Burlington-based Branthaven Homes and a Mohawk College graduate.

More than 5,500 students will graduate from Mohawk during 11 spring convocation ceremonies from June 12 to June 16 in the McIntyre Performing Arts Centre at the Fennell campus.
