Date change for Laverne Cox visit to Mohawk College

Orange is the New Black star Laverne Cox has moved her Mohawk College speaking engagement to Thursday, March 26, 2015. The star was originally scheduled to appear on the March 23. The date had to be changed due to Laverne’s new role on a hit NBC show.

Tickets purchased for the March 23 date will be honoured for the new date.

Cox will talk about her life and journey as a transgender actress. She will discuss her road to womanhood starting from a Christian home in Mobile, Ala., to reaching her current life as an actress and activist for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, intersex, asexual and others’ rights. Last month, Glamour magazine named Cox as a 2014 Woman of the Year, a title annually given to a select group of influential women.

The event is presented by Social Inc., Mohawk College’s positive space, in partnership with the Mohawk Alumni Association, Mohawk Students’ Association, The Well (LGBTQ Community Wellness Centre of Hamilton) and the Sexual Assault Centre of Hamilton and Area. It is not a fundraising event for Mohawk College nor any of the partnering sponsors.

The event will be held in the McIntyre Performing Arts Centre at Mohawk’s Fennell Campus in Hamilton. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. (general seating) with Cox taking the stage at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35, with special $10 tickets available to Mohawk College students at the Mohawk Students’ Association office, Room G109 (please show One Card for identification). A limited number of VIP tickets are also available, with special reserved seating and a meet and greet with Cox before the event.

Tickets are available online, but get them quick as there are less than 100 tickets still available for purchase. http://www.mohawkcollege.ca/alumni/alumniEvents/laverne-cox.html
