Hamilton Welcomes the World

The City of Hamilton recently showed its appreciation for international students, hosting the Hamilton Welcomes the World event during SuperCrawl.

This city-wide international student welcome event, organized in partnership with the City of Hamilton, Hamilton Immigration Partnership Council, Mohawk College, Hamilton International Students and McMaster University, was held with great success! Students gathered at city hall and were welcomed to Hamilton by :

  • Chukky Ibe - a former international student, previous president of McMaster’s Student Union, and now Strategic Initiatives and Policy Advisor for the Mayor’s office,
  • Ashik - former Mohawk Students Association President and now a Youth Settlement Worker at YMCA
  • Jeff Beattie -Ward 10 City Councilor

Students were then led on walking tours by student and community volunteers to become better acquainted with their new home away from home. Students had a chance to learn about supports in Hamilton that are provided by different community organizations. At SuperCrawl, the International Student Community Collective (ISSC) hosted a booth,  supported by the great team at Mohawk and our student volunteers.

By the numbers:

  • 1065 international students were involved
  • 46 student volunteers – 35 who were from Mohawk!
  • 7 Mohawk College International Staff
