Mohawk becomes first college in Canada to offer Financial Services students a fast-track to a Professional Financial Planner (PFP®) designation

Agreement with Canadian Securities Institute will speed up process to become a PFP®

Mohawk College and the Canadian Securities Institute (CSI) have signed an agreement that will see students in the College’s two-year Financial Services program earn their Personal Financial Planner (PFP) Designation much faster than their peers at other colleges.

Mohawk is the first and only college in Canada to have an agreement with CSI. The partnership between Mohawk College and CSI begins in 2016, but the offer to earn the PFP extends to include students who have been in the diploma program since September 2014.

The agreement will exempt Financial Services students from some of the requirements for obtaining the PFP designation. CSI based the exemption on the program of studies for the Financial Services program. Students must still write the Applied Financial Planning (AFP) Certification exam in order to receive the PFP. Before writing the exam, the students will be required to submit college transcript as proof of program completion. They will also need to complete an exemption application and pay a fee of prior to writing the exam. The students will also be granted a Certificate in Financial Services Advice (CFSA) from CSI.

“This is a very big advantage for students in Mohawk’s Financial Services program. Our graduates will become PFPs faster because of this and that will give them a significant advantage over the competition.”
Mary Iannazzo, Professor, McKeil School of Business
“We’re very pleased to partner with such a highly respected Canadian college. The Personal Financial Planner (PFP) designation is a great asset for students who want to build careers in the financial services industry. The PFP program provides them with the skills and knowledge they need to work in the industry and to give financial planning advice to clients. It also includes the licensing requirement to sell investment funds. It’s gratifying to know that, through our partnership with Mohawk College, we can help students interested in this field to achieve their career goals faster.”
Marie Muldowney, Managing Director, CSI
“Mohawk is proud to be the first college in Canada to be able to offer this to our students. This agreement reflects the high calibre of the faculty at the McKeil School of Business who work hard to give our students the best education possible.”
Piero Cherubini, Dean, McKeil School of Business
