Mohawk College and the Mohawk Students’ Association will break ground next month on a much-needed recreation centre for students.

The 65,000 square foot Mohawk Recreation Centre (MRC) will feature a triple gymnasium, indoor running track and fitness, health and wellness centre. The $35 million MRC will replace fitness and recreation facilities at the Fennell Campus that are among the oldest and smallest at Ontario’s 24 community colleges.

Once the doors open to the MRC in the Fall of 2013, full-time students will begin paying a fee every semester. Memberships will also be available for part-time and continuing education students, apprentices, alumni and staff. Students at all campuses will have full use of the MRC seven days a week from morning to night.

All students are encouraged to take part this month in consultations about the MRC. The college, together with the MSA and Students’ Athletics Committee, are soliciting ideas on what programming to offer at the centre.

The MRC is part of the ongoing renewal of Mohawk’s Fennell Campus. We have ambitious plans for further investments and we are actively pursuing private and public sector funding. The college and MSA are proud to be working together on this long overdue and much needed addition to the college that will give students an outstanding facility for recreational sports, fitness and exercise and varsity athletics.
