Mohawk College announces program changes

Applied Music Advanced Diploma being suspended, Office Admin – Legal being cancelled

Mohawk College has made the difficult decision to suspend its three-year Applied Music Ontario College Advanced Diploma and to cancel one stream of its Office Administration program.

The Mohawk College Music program has had a long and successful history, with graduates moving on to bright careers in the industry and in music performance, including international touring musicians and a number of JUNO-nominated recording artists. The award-winning faculty of the Music program have nurtured performance excellence for more than four decades.

This strong legacy makes the suspension of the program very difficult. However, the program has not been financially viable for several years, with declining enrolment and increasing costs. It is no longer financially possible to offer the depth and quality of courses required to provide students with the high-quality training that has made the Applied Music program so successful.

With the announced suspension of the Applied Music program, no new students will be accepted into the program. Existing students will be fully supported as they continue their studies until the completion of their three-year diploma.

This decision will not result in the loss of any full-time faculty positions at this time.

Office Administration – Legal

In addition, the college is announcing the cancellation of its Office Administration – Legal Ontario College Diploma program.

Office Administration – Legal is one of four optional streams in the college’s Office Administration program offerings. The other streams (Executive, General, and Health Care) are not affected by this decision. Students in Mohawk College’s Office Administration programs all study common courses for the first and second semesters of their education. Students then choose a specific stream for their third and fourth semesters.

The Legal stream has experienced declining enrolment for several years and has reached a level that is not financially sustainable. There are other related programs, such as Paralegal, available for students who may be interested in exploring careers in the legal services sector.

This decision will not result in the loss of any full-time faculty positions at this time.
