Named 3rd-ranked associate college overall in 2022 Sustainable Campus Index

Mohawk College has been recognized as the third-top ranked college in its category and maintained its gold rating in the international 2022 Sustainable Campus Index, managed by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).

Stars_Seal_Gold_RGB_300The Sustainable Campus Index recognizes top-performing sustainable colleges and universities overall and in 17 impact areas, as measured by the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS). Mohawk College first received its gold STARS rating in 2019.

“We strive to be a national and international leader in climate action and sustainability and this recognition of our work is greatly appreciated,” says Mohawk College President & CEO Ron McKerlie. “Maintaining our STARS Gold rating affirms that we are on the right path and we look forward to contributing much more to this important global effort.

“We are developing an ambitious new Mohawk College Climate Action Plan with a goal to be net-zero carbon in our direct campus operations by 2035, 15 years ahead of the global 2050 target.”

Mohawk College was the first college in Ontario to introduce a comprehensive environmental management plan to address key areas of college operations including transportation, waste management and food. The college’s sustainability team manages over 30 programs and initiatives each year that are dedicated to embedding sustainable practices into operations and programming across all Mohawk College campuses and providing learning opportunities in sustainability for Mohawk students. As well, the opening of The Joyce Centre for Partnership & Innovation in September 2018 introduced students to one of the largest zero-carbon institutional buildings in Canada, meaning there are no net greenhouse gas emissions associated with the building’s operations.
