Mohawk College has been named the 7th best research college in Canada, and third in Ontario, in 2023, according to national rankings released today.

As a result of the research activities at IDEAWORKS, Mohawk’s applied research division, Mohawk College has earned a top-10 position in four of the past five years in the Research Infosource annual rankings. In addition, the college had top rankings in college research activity (Research Partnerships, Paid Student Researchers categories) and in its overall five-year industry research income (Industry Research Income, Industry Research Income as % of Total College Research Income).

“Partnership and innovation are key elements of our success as a national applied research centre,” said Mohawk College President and CEO Ron J. McKerlie. “Working with more than 200 partners, the IDEAWORKS research teams are breaking new ground with community organizations and providing regional companies with a competitive advantage in regional, national, and international markets. At the same time, we provided 174 student researchers with field-tested experience with some of the most advanced technology available.”

Twelve years ago, when the college first expanded its applied research activities, it ranked 33rd in the national rankings. Now, Mohawk College is a perennial top-runner in the annual listing.

In addition to its overall ranking of seventh, Mohawk was considered among the top-ranked large colleges in Canada in four categories:

2nd - Industry Research Income (FY2018-FY2022) – Mohawk applied research projects raised more than $21.8 million over the past five years.

2nd - Industry Research Income as % of Total College Research Income (FY2018-FY2022) - Industry grants and contracts represented 46.5% of total research income over the past five years.

2nd - Research Partnerships – 224 partners collaborated with the college on applied research projects in 2022.

3rd - Paid Student Researchers – IDEAWORKS employed 174 students in applied research projects in 2022.

“These strong rankings serve as validation of the expertise and commitment our research teams bring to every project IDEAWORKS undertakes with our partners,” said Dean of Applied Research Cristina Gage. “We thank all our partners for their support. Through innovation and collaboration, we are developing, prototyping, and commercializing new products, processes and technologies.
