Mohawk Mountaineers to host Ontario College Lacrosse Sixes Championships

Championship day to feature Indigenous Athletics logo unveiling

HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk College Mountaineers will host the 2026 Ontario College Lacrosse Sixes Championship on Sunday, Nov. 1 at Bishop Tonnos Catholic Secondary School, bringing together four Ontario colleges to compete for the exhibition season title.

The championship will also feature the unveiling of a new alternate Indigenous Athletics logo developed in collaboration with Mohawk College’s Indigenous Education & Relations Office and Athletics Department. The logo was designed by Kyle Joedicke, a Hamilton-based Haudenosaunee artist whose Woodlands-style murals appear in communities across Ontario. The logo will be revealed during a pre-tournament ceremony at 10:40 a.m.

“Mohawk College is proud to help bring Lacrosse sixes to Ontario college athletics, creating new opportunities for student-athletes while honouring the sport’s Indigenous roots,” said Paul Armstrong, President of Mohawk College. “The unveiling of our new Indigenous-designed logo reflects our commitment to celebrating Indigenous cultures and ensuring Indigenous students and communities see themselves represented across our college.”

The tournament will feature the Mountaineers, Durham Lords, Fleming Phoenix and Humber Hawks, with all four teams competing in the semifinals.

Durham and Fleming will open the day at 11 a.m., followed by Mohawk and Humber at noon. The bronze medal game is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., with the championship game to follow at 2:30 p.m.

Durham enters championship day as the top seed after posting a 5-1 record in round robin play. Mohawk finished second at 4-2, followed by Humber at 3-3 and Fleming in fourth place.

The 2026-27 season marks the first-time Lacrosse sixes has been played under the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) umbrella. In June, the conference announced the discipline would move forward as an exploratory sport for the fall semester.

Interest in collegiate Lacrosse sixes has grown in recent seasons, with Mohawk launching its program in 2023 and Humber following in 2025. Last year, the Mountaineers and Hawks faced off in Canada's first collegiate Lacrosse sixes match at the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association's Baggataway Cup.

Following a review of an expression of interest submitted last November, the OCAA approved an exhibition season featuring round robin competition hosted by participating colleges. Mohawk was selected to host the championship.

The exhibition season all-stars will be announced on Thursday, October 29, with recipients honoured before their respective semifinal games on Sunday. Championship all-stars will also be announced following the gold medal game.

Following the exhibition season, the OCAA will review the success at its directors' meeting in December to determine whether lacrosse sixes has the potential to become an official varsity sport.
