Mountaineer varsity highlights - August 26, 2022

High performance sports action is back at Mohawk College as the 2022/23 year kicked-off this past week.

Mountaineers soccer exhibition gameBoth the women’s and men’s soccer teams began preseason play at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan, ON. It was an early test for both Mountaineer teams as they took on the Algoma Thunderbirds of Ontario University Athletics (OUA).

Mohawk’s women’s team played a strong match, particularly in the second half when the Mountaineers had three dangerous scoring opportunities which included a free kick off the crossbar by Kimberly Brinker. Mohawk was unable to score and lost 1-0 on a late goal.

The men’s team also played fantastic on the back of second-year goalkeeper Oliver Steinke, who made four saves in the game that would lead to a 0-0 draw. The Mountaineers had seven shots on goal for the game.

Upcoming Schedule

Mohawk men’s soccer will continue exhibition play versus OUA opponents when they travel to Waterloo on Aug. 28 to play the University of Waterloo Warriors. The match will be played at Warrior Field and begin at 7 p.m.
