Mountaineers varsity highlights – Feb. 17

Second consecutive OCAA Champions has a nice ring to it. That’s exactly what Mohawk Mountaineers men’s curling was able to accomplish.

On Feb. 11 the Mountaineers defeated the Humber Hawks 8-4 to win their OCAA Championship for the second year in a row. Curling becomes the first Mohawk program to win in consecutive years since women’s basketball did it in the 1989-90 and 1990-91 seasons.

The Mountaineers will now compete at the CCAA Championships in Sudbury, ON between March 15-19.

Mohawk’s mixed doubles team also won a medal for the second straight year, winning bronze at the OCAA Championships.

The curling program also took home numerous individual awards:

·       Jacob Jones was named OCAA Men’s Curling Most Valuable Player and an OCAA First-Team All-Star – the second year he has earned both honours

·       Betty Calic was named OCAA Men’s Curling Coach of the Year

·       Liam Little and Joel Matthews joined Jones on the OCAA First-year All-Star

·       Eric Just was named an OCAA Men’s Curling Second-Team All-Star

·       Ashley Verhees was named to the OCAA Mixed Doubles Second-Team All-Star

Mohawk women’s and men’s volleyball completed regular season play this weekend and will head into OCAA playoffs. Men’s volleyball finished season play with a 10-8 record and will host an OCAA crossover round playoff game on Feb. 18 at 1 p.m. inside the DBARC.

Women’s volleyball ended the season with an 11-7 record, but will travel to North Bay, ON on Feb. 18 to play the Canadore Panthers at 4 p.m.

Mountaineers men’s basketball continues to be nationally ranked at number seven, and picked up a 30-point win over the Panthers this past weekend.

Lastly, women’s basketball is showing huge improvements the last couple weeks and picked up a 25-point win over the Redeemer Royals.

The Mountaineers also announced that tickets for the CCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship are now on sale and can be found here.
