Mountaineers varsity highlights – February 15, 2024
The Mohawk Mountaineers men’s curling team captured the OCAA Championship once again. It is the third consecutive year the Mountaineers have won provincial gold.
The Mountaineers met the Humber Hawks in the gold medal match, marking the fourth straight year Mohawk and Humber have played each other for the championship, with the Mountaineers winning the last three matchups. This year the Mountaineers won the gold-medal match 9-3.
As well, Mohawk’s mixed doubles team captured an OCAA bronze medal at the championships. It is the Mountaineers' third consecutive year with a medal in mixed doubles and second straight bronze.
The curling program also brought home individual hardware, headlined by Jacob Jones being named OCAA Men’s Curling Most Valuable Player of the Year for the third straight time. Betty Calic earned OCAA Men’s Curling Coach of the Year, which is also her third straight year winning the award.
Jones and Liam Little were named OCAA Men’s Curling First-Team Championship All-Stars, while teammates Eric Just and Joel Matthews were honoured as second-team championship all-stars. On the mixed doubles side, Ava Andrews was named a first-team championship all-star.
Mohawk curling will now prepare for the CCAA/Curling Canada Curling Championships taking place in Fredericton, March 17-22.
OCAA basketball playoffs will return to the DBARC this weekend. Both the Mohawk women’s and men’s teams will host the Loyalist Lancers in the qualifying round.
The two teams concluded regular season play last weekend with the Mountaineer women coming out on top 89-83 against the Fanshawe Falcons. The men’s team lost 102-98 to the Falcons.
OCAA playoff runs came to an end for both Mountaineer volleyball teams last Saturday. The women’s team lost 3-1 to the Algonquin Wolves and the men also lost 3-1 to the Centennial Colts.
Athletes of the Week
Maddie Anderson (Whitby, ON)
Anderson and the Mohawk women's basketball played to a 2-0 record in the final week of the regular season, with the third-year guard averaging 21 points with 53.6 percent shooting and 8.5 rebounds. In the Mountaineers victory versus the Humber Hawks, Anderson had her first career double-double with 17 points with four three-pointers and 13 rebounds. Anderson followed that performance up with a career-high 25 points , with five threes made versus the Fanshawe Falcons.
Jacob Jones (Brantford, ON)
Jones (Brantford, ON) did what Jones has done for the last two years. The Mohawk curling skip led the Mountaineers to their third straight OCAA Championship, while capturing his third consecutive OCAA Men's Curling Most Valuable Player award and, for the third time, he was named an OCAA First-Team Championship All-Star.

- Feb. 17 – Mohawk will host playoff action in the DBARC versus the Loyalist Lancers. The women’s game tips off at 1 p.m. and the men will follow at 3 p.m.
