Both the Mohawk Mountaineers women’s and men’s basketball teams have advanced to the OCAA quarter-finals.

The Mohawk women won their playoff qualifier in a big way to advance, defeating the Loyalist Lancers by 52 points, 90-38. Shooting nearly 50 per cent, the Mountaineers led for the entirety of the game.

Maddie Anderson (Whitby, ON) led Mohawk with 22 points.

On the men’s side, the Mountaineers had to complete a 13-point comeback to defeat the Lancers in their OCAA qualifying game, winning 98-96. Mohawk trailed by nine entering the fourth quarter but second-half performances by Raivone Young (Halifax, NS) and Harpreet Gill (Brampton, ON) lifted the Mountaineers to the win.

Young scored 21 of his team-high 29 points in the second half and Gill scored 19 of his 25 points in the second half, as well.

Both teams will be on the road for their quarter-final games. The women will be in the nation’s capital to play the Algonquin Wolves on Feb. 24 at 2 p.m., while the men will be in Toronto to play the George Brown Huskies at 5 p.m.

Athletes of the Week

Lauren Snider (Brantford, ON)

Playing for 25 minutes for Mohawk, Snider scored 12 points on six-of-eight shooting and had three steals in their win versus the Lancers. But it was Snider's play that didn't show on the box score that was prevalent in the Mountaineers' win - stepping in to draw multiple charges, being active on loose balls, and playing aggressive defence right to the final seconds.

Raivone Young (Halifax, NS)

Young, also named OCAA Star of the Week, scored a team-high 29 points for the Mountaineers in their 98-96 playoff win. Down nine entering the fourth quarter, Young scored 12 of his points to lift Mohawk to the comeback win. The third-year guard shot an efficient seven-of-12 from the floor with five made threes, and was 10-of-13 from the free throw line. He also provided five rebounds and two steals. Young also had a fourth-quarter alley-oop dunk that electrified the Mohawk crowd en route to the playoff win.
