Mountaineers varsity highlights – February 3, 2023

Conference playoffs are just around the corner as the 2022-23 regular season winds down for Mohawk Mountaineers indoor varsity teams.

Women's volleyball players blocking a spikeMen’s basketball is one win away from being guaranteed to host in the opening round of playoffs, with five remaining games. Most recently, they beat the Fanshawe Falcons to win their 11th game of the year and are currently ranked ninth in the CCAA.

Both men’s and women’s volleyball are in a muddy scenario for hosting possibilities. Mohawk men are currently fourth in their division and the women are fifth, each having two matches remaining. They each recently picked up dominating wins over the Conestoga Condors.

Also, the OCAA Curling Championships take place this upcoming week between Feb. 9-11. Both the Mountaineers men’s team and mixed doubles team captured the gold medal a year ago and will be looking to repeat the success.

Mountaineers Athletes of the Week

(in partnership with the Mohawk Students’ Association)

Lexie Zicari (women’s volleyball)

Zicari (Burlington, ON) and the women's volleyball team began the week nearly beating the No. 2 nationally ranked Humber Hawks. The match went five sets in favour of the Hawks, but the Mountaineers took two sets, snapping Humber's streak of 31 consecutive sets won. Zicari filled the box sheet with a team-leading 13 kills, 10 digs and four service aces.

The second-year outside hitter also had a strong performance in Mohawk's three-set win over the Sheridan Bruins on Saturday. Zicari posted eight kills, four digs and two aces.

Turner Neame (men’s volleyball)

Neame (Hamilton, ON), on Jan. 25 versus the Humber Hawks, set a new Mountaineers record for total digs in a single season, surpassing Ryan Dela Rosa who held the record with 132 digs from the 2011-12 season. Neame had 15 digs in the match versus the Hawks and added another 10 in three sets versus the Bruins. The second-year libero now has 159 digs on the season, placing him first in the Mountaineers record book and fourth in the OCAA this season.
