Mountaineers varsity highlights – January 25, 2024

Mountaineers basketball player shooting over a defender

It wasn’t a winning week for the Mohawk Mountaineers, but all four indoor teams remain in playoff contention and three have clinched a playoff spot.

The men’s basketball team dropped both their weekend games against the Lambton Lions and St. Clair Saints, but bounced back in a big way on Wednesday (Jan. 24) with an 86-83 win over the Niagara Knights.

Iverson Chong’s performance for men’s basketball was the highlight of the week. The first-year guard scored 48 points, an OCAA single-game best this season, on 56 per cent shooting and knocked down 11 threes versus the Saints.

Chong’s teammate, Raivone Young, joined the scoring party versus Niagara. Young scored a career-best 32 points on 10-of-16 shooting.

Women’s basketball and volleyball, along with men’s volleyball, came out winless this past week.

Athletes of the Week

Sofia Spoljar (Hamilton, ON)

Spoljar was impressive both offensively and defensively in Mohawk women's volleyball's lone match this past weekend. The third-year outside hitter had eight kills, eight digs and a block in three sets played versus the St. Clair Saints.

Iverson Chong (Oakville, ON)

Chong started the weekend with 18 points on 53.8 per cent shooting versus the Lambton Lions. That performance included five rebounds and two steals. But it was what Chong did versus the St. Clair Saints that stood out. The first-year guard scored 48 points, an OCAA single-game best this season. Chong shot 56 per cent from the field and knocked down 11 threes.
