It was a strong week for the Mohawk Mountaineers court sports teams, winning a combined six of eight games.

The week started with all four teams defeating the Redeemer Royals on Super Saturday (Nov. 4) inside the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre. Mohawk women’s basketball won 80-69. Men’s basketball claimed a 95-81 victory. Women’s volleyball swept the Royals 3-0 and men’s volleyball made a strong comeback, to win 3-2.

Women’s basketball had the biggest win of the week when they defeated the No. 4 nationally ranked Humber Hawks, 65-56. The Mountaineers men, ranked ninth in the country, also won over the Hawks, completing an 18-point comeback for the 78-77 victory.

The results were not the same for volleyball against the Hawks but both women’s and men’s volleyball teams showed growth near the end of their matches. The women lost 3-0 (12-25, 21-25, 24-25) and the men would also lose 3-0 (16-25, 16-25, 23-25).

Athletes of the Week

Peyton Connolly - Basketball (Hamilton, ON)

Connolly put up her first career double-double in an 11-point victory over the Redeemer Royals. She had 16 points and 10 rebounds, adding four assists, a steal and a block to her line, while shooting six-for-10 from the field.

Alex Jurak - Volleyball (St. Catharines, ON)

Jurak and Mountaineers men's volleyball won a five-set thriller over the Royals, with Mohawk coming back after falling behind two sets to one. This season, Jurak has been a top outside hitter for the Mountaineers, and led the team  against Redeemer with 13 kills, two serving aces, three digs and one block to his stat line.

Upcoming Game Schedule

Cross Country

• Nov. 11 – Both the women’s and men’s cross country teams will compete in the CCAA Championships in Truro, Nova Scotia.

Volleyball

• Nov. 14 – Mohawk volleyball will head to London, ON to play the Fanshawe Falcons. The women’s game begins at 6 p.m. and the men follow at 8 p.m.
