Mountaineers varsity highlights – November 29, 2024
On November 22, the Mohawk Mountaineers honoured the successful 2024 season for cross country with a ceremony inside the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre.
The ceremony included celebrating the team, honouring the graduating student-athletes and unveiling the women’s cross country OCAA Championship banner. Along with the women’s provincial championship, the Mohawk cross country program claimed an OCAA silver medal in the men’s division, and at the CCAA National Championships won bronze medals in the women’s and mixed divisions.
This past week’s action included the Mountaineers men’s volleyball team defeating the St. Clair Saints in a thrilling five set match. Mohawk’s women’s team dropped their second match of the season, losing in four sets to the No. 11 nationally ranked Saints.
It was split results on the basketball side with both the women and men losing to the Saints, but bouncing back the day after to defeat the Lambton Lions.
2024 Bernetta Scime Holiday Toy Drive
The Department of Athletics and Recreation announced the launch of the 2024 Bernetta Scime Holiday Toy Drive. Proceeds this year will be donated to the Eva Rothwell Centre with donations being collected until December 11. Learn more about the holiday initiative.
Mountaineers Athletes of the Week
Maddie Anderson – Women’s Basketball
Over the course of two games this past weekend Anderson averaged 24 points, six rebounds and five made threes. It was the second game of a back-to-back where the fourth-year guard shined. In a 78-68 victory over the Lambton Lions, Anderson scored a career-high 30 points on nine-of-15 shooting and six-of-nine from three. She also had six made free throws and six rebounds in the contest.
Anderson was also named an OCAA Star of the Week.
Alex Jurak – Men’s Volleyball
Jurak was a star both offensively and defensively in Mohawk's five set win over the St. Clair Saints. The second-year outside hitter had 14 kills, two service aces, eight digs and a career-high tying three blocks.
