Mountaineers varsity highlights – November 3, 2023

OCAA Championship Men - 6

For the first time since 1988, both Mohawk Mountaineers men’s and women’s cross country teams brought home a medal from the OCAA Championships in the same year.

The Mountaineers men topped the podium, winning gold, their first provincial championship in 29 years. The women claimed OCAA bronze for the second consecutive year.

Two Mohawk runners achieved individual medals as Sage Sulentic (Hamilton, ON) and Annie Sterenberg (Vineland, ON) won OCAA bronze in their respective races. Sulentic and Sterenberg were named Mountaineers Athletes of the Week.

A total of six Mountaineer runners received OCAA All-Ontario honours, including Sulentic who was also named the OCAA top rookie runner in the men’s division. Mohawk head coach David Hopton was announced as the OCAA Coach of the Year.

The Mountaineers now prepare for the CCAA Championships being held on Nov. 11 in Truro, Nova Scotia.

In court sport action, men’s basketball dominated with a 44-point win over the Conestoga Condors and then defeating the Canadore Panthers by 43.

Women’s basketball played one game during the week, winning 70-45 over the Condors.

Despite a 3-0 (17-25, 10-25, 21-25) loss to the St. Clair Saints, women’s volleyball was able to salvage their weekend with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-14) victory against the Fanshawe Falcons.

It was a tough week for men’s volleyball, who lost both their matches.
