Mountaineers varsity highlights – November 8, 2024
Mohawk Mountaineers women’s volleyball continues to be perfect through the early portion of their 2024-25 season.
This past week the women’s volleyball team picked up another two wins to improve their record to 6-0. The victories came against Redeemer and Conestoga, both on the road.
A two-game win streak was snapped for the Mountaineers men’s volleyball team, as their record now falls to 2-4 after losses to Redeemer and Conestoga.
Both basketball teams were off this past week, but the men’s team remains nationally ranked at No. 13.
The men’s lacrosse sixes team wrapped up their season by participating in the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association (CUFLA) Sixes Showcase Game. Mohawk lost to the Milton Choas 23-21, but the showcase game brought a lot of eyeballs to the sixes-style of lacrosse with the Mountaineers as leaders.
Mohawk cross country will compete at the CCAA National Championships this Saturday. Coming into the race the Mountaineers women’s team is nationally ranked at No. 2 and the men are No. 6 nationally ranked.
2024 Bernetta Scime Holiday Toy Drive
The Department of Athletics and Recreation announced the launch of the 2024 Bernetta Scime Holiday Toy Drive. Proceeds this year will be donated to the Eva Rothwell Centre with donations being collected until December 11. Learn more about the holiday initiative.
Mountaineers Athletes of the Week
Julia Marks – Women’s Volleyball
The first-year outside hitter combined for 17 kills, nine service aces and 34 digs in eight sets played. Marks is currently tied for 10th in kills in the OCAA with 48, tied for 4th in service aces with 18, and seventh in digs with 61. In those categories amongst OCAA first-year athletes, Marks is third in kills, and second in both service aces and digs. She was also named an OCAA Star of the Week.
Dean Zicari – Men’s Volleyball
The second-year outside hitter combined for 18 kills, two service aces, six digs and six blocks in eight sets played.
