Mountaineers varsity highlights – October, 18, 2024
The Mohawk Mountaineers women’s soccer team has advanced to the OCAA quarter-finals for their third consecutive year, while the Mohawk court sports get ready to begin their regular season this weekend.
On Wednesday night, the Mountaineers saw the women’s soccer team defeat the Conestoga Condors 3-1 in the qualifying round of playoffs. It was a victory that kept the Mohawk season alive as women’s soccer looks to win a quarter-final match for the first time in nearly two decades.
The Mountaineers will face the No. 1 nationally ranked Seneca Sting on October 19 at 1 pm in that quarter-final match. Action will take place at Newnham Field in Toronto.
For men’s soccer, the season came to an end in the qualifying round after a tough loss to the No. 1 nationally ranked Humber Hawks.
Cross Country was also in action this past Saturday when they raced in the Centennial Invitational. The women’s team had their third first-place finish of the season with all five runners finishing in the top-11. It moved the Mohawk team up one spot in the CCAA National Rankings to No. 2.
On the men’s side, the Mountaineers continue to have strong races as they placed second for the third time this season. They are currently nationally ranked at No. 5.
As mentioned, court sports are back in action this weekend.
The Mohawk basketball teams will host the Fanshawe Falcons inside the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre on October 19 with the women’s game tipping off at 1 pm and the men’s action at 3 pm.
Both volleyball teams will hit the road to begin their season on October 19 as well. They’ll make a short drive to Sheridan’s Trafalgar campus to play the Bruins. The women’s game begins at 1 p.m. and the men will play at 3 pm.
Mountaineers Athletes of the Week
Samantha DeHaan – Women’s Soccer
In her final career regular season match with the Mountaineers, DeHaan put up a career performance versus the No. 11 nationally ranked Redeemer Royals. The fourth-year goalkeeper in a clean sheet 0-0 draw made a career-best 11 saves. DeHaan's previous career-high was 10, a feat she had accomplished multiple times before in her career with Mohawk. Her ability to keep the Royals off the scoresheet allowed the Mountaineers to secure the fifth seed in the OCAA west division.
Raina Hartnell – Cross Country
Hartnell also had her best performance as a Mountaineer this past weekend at the Centennial Invitational. Racing in her third event of the year, the first-year had her best result finishing 10th overall. Hartnell has shown improvement all season long, having finished 21st in her first race, 18th in race two and now finishing within the top-10. The Mohawk women's cross country team received first place with five runners placing within the top-11.
