Mountaineers varsity highlights – October 26, 2023

Basketball player moving to the basket under pressure

The Mohawk Mountaineers' four court sports teams are off to a great start in the 2023-24 season, having won a combined six of their eight games.

Men’s basketball squeezed out a two-point victory in their season opener versus the Niagara Knights at Niagara College. They then responded with a 44-point win at home over the Conestoga Condors.

The Mountaineers women’s basketball struggled offensively in their first game of the season against the Knights, losing 56-52. But the team bounced back with a 70-45 win over the Condors.

It was a dominant start for women’s volleyball with two convincing 3-0 victories over the Cambrian Golden Shield and Boreal Vipers. On the men’s side, it was a tough 3-1 loss to the Golden Shield and then a clean 3-0 win over the Vipers.

In playoff action, Mountaineers softball was within a win of a medal game but experienced lost tough games to the Durham Lords and Humber Hawks. Mohawk placed fourth at the OCAA Championship.

Women’s soccer, for the second consecutive year, lost 1-0 to the Durham Lords in the quarter-final round of the OCAA Championship. The team stole the show in all-star selections, however, with seven athletes named OCAA All-Stars.

Cassandra Campanella (Hamilton, ON), Mia Hadley (Milton, ON), Jaiden Morgan (Burlington, ON) and Emily Schwarz (Stoney Creek, ON) were awarded OCAA West Division First-Team All-Stars.

OCAA West Division Second-Team All-Star honours were awarded to Alyssa Glasbergen (Burlington, ON), Lauren Snider (Brantford, ON) and Isabelle Udovc (Grimsby, ON).

The men’s soccer team had Oliver Steinke (Dundas, ON) and Hamza Salman (Hamilton, ON) honoured as second-team all-stars.
