Mountaineers varsity highlights – September 15, 2023

In the first week back, the Mohawk Mountaineers fall varsity teams had winning records on their home fields.
The early success was led by the Mountaineers women’s soccer team, with a 2-0 start to their season. Mohawk defeated the Fanshawe Falcons 3-0 and then won 2-0 over the Niagara Knights at Tim Hortons Field. In those two games, the Mountaineers' five goals were scored by five different athletes.
It was not the same start for men’s soccer, with a 3-0 loss to the Falcons. However, they bounced back at home with a 3-2 win over the Knights. Mohawk was led by Hamza Salman, who scored two goals in the win.
On the diamond, Mountaineers softball played a tough weekend with four games that included a road trip to Sarnia. Mohawk opened the season with a 12-11 loss to last year's OCAA silver medalists, Durham Lords, but on the same day won 2-0 against the Sheridan Bruins. The following day, the Mountaineers defeated the Falcons 7-6 and lost 10-4 to the Lambton Lions.
Mohawk Athletics also hosted a successful volleyball alumni game on September 9, and will host a basketball game on September 16 which is free for everyone to attend.
Athletes of the Week
Emily Schwarz (Stoney Creek, ON)
Schwarz played her first collegiate game last weekend for the Mountaineers, playing for 74 minutes in a 3-0 victory over the Fanshawe Falcons. 17 minutes into her OCAA debut, Schwarz scored her first goal to give Mohawk its second goal of the game.
Ashlee LaForme (New Credit, ON)
LaForme also made her Mohawk debut on the weekend and was particularly impressive in her first start on the mound. Facing the Sheridan Bruins, LaForme pitched a seven-inning complete game shutout, allowing only three hits and striking out five. She also took to the mound in both games on Sunday versus the Fanshawe Falcons and Lambton Lions, pitching 5 and 1/3 innings, striking out two and allowing two earned runs. Offensively, LaForme went six-for-13, driving in one run and scoring six times.
LaForme was named OCAA Star of the Week.
