Public Policy’s Role in Driving Innovation Discussed at the PIVOT Tech Conference
At the recent PIVOT Tech Conference, BACCC Manager Jesse Elders moderated a discussion on “How Green Building Standards Drive the Adoption of New Technologies”.
The PIVOT Tech Conference is an annual event focused on fostering collaboration, igniting action, and highlighting Hamilton as a nucleus of technological innovation and a place of opportunity in combatting greenhouse gas emissions to cultivate both sustainable growth and job creation.
The session, convened by the Bay Area Climate Change Council (BACCC), focused on the quest for better buildings supported by public policies and financial incentives to boost the adoption of technologies ranging from geothermal exchange and solar panels to techniques to reduce embodied carbon in new developments.
The panel members included:
- Phil Caldwell, Senior Project Manager, Urban Renewal, City of Hamilton
- Graeme Kennedy, Development Manager, Tenblock Developments
- Daniella Ruggiero, Sustainability Team Lead, Pratus Group
- Tim Weber, Partner and Co-Founder, Diverso Energy Inc.
During the session, the panel discussed the role of public policy, including policies such as municipal Green Building Standards, in driving low carbon building innovation. The panelists described growth in the adoption of green technologies in response to strong government mandates to reduce carbon emissions, and the critical success factors required for public policy to be effective in driving sustainable change.

Recently, BACCC successfully advocated for Green Building Standards to be implemented at the City of Hamilton.
The Bay Area Climate Change Council is a coalition-in-residence administratively housed within the Mohawk College Centre for Climate Change Management, and is supported by the Cities of Hamilton and Burlington. BACCC’s strength lies in collaboration and the diverse expertise of its member organizations to harness the power of the community to advance net zero emissions across the Hamilton-Burlington Bay Area by 2050.
