Helping Hampers aid international students - In the News

In April, following the first-wave COVID-19 lockdown in our region, Mohawk’s International Department mobilized to create a Helping Hamper program. They have partnered with the Hamilton International Students organization and received an initial grant from the Hamilton Community Foundation.

The program recently made its 1000th delivery. Nearly 300 Mohawk College international students have receive support to date and the program now reaches international students from McMaster University as well.

Just as we are preparing for the second wave of COVID-19, expecting increased lockdowns (job losses) again, and winter coming – the program is about to exhaust the Hamilton Community Foundation’s funding. Organizers are reaching out to the community for financial support and for volunteers to give worn-out delivery volunteers a break.

The Hamilton Spectator and regional community news outlets covered the story.
